Best Season of Deep Space Nine

A positive Trek thread for once, I actually thought that DS9 was arguably the best Trek series in the entire franchise, perhaps excluding TOS, but what was DS9's best season?

I thought that Season Five was the most consistent season of DS9 with too many brilliant moments to highlight, but most of the series was brilliant as well.

Haven't seen it in years but the best seasons were when the actual war was going on( Season 6 & 7) I'd say both are the best but maybe a tiny edge to 6 for the retaking of the station story.

The OP should really insert a synopsis of the various seasons for those folks that don't memorize the running order of a particular series.

I wrote some outlines for the series to help us remember what happened:

Season 1:

After the Cardassian occupation was overthrown by the Bajorans, they ask the Federation to assist with the rebuilding of their planet, and way of life. Commander Benjamin Sisko, a widowed single father, reluctantly takes command of space station Deep Space Nine, a Cardassian mining outpost. His task is to not only help the Bajorans regain their dignity and strength, but also keep two crews with opposing sensibilities working together It is also revealed that he is to become an icon in the Bajoran religion. In the process, a stable wormhole is discovered, allowing for safe passage to the Gamma Quadrant, an area of space 70,000 light years away. This discovery makes Deep Space Nine a vital outpost in Federation space. This season introduces Gul Dukat and (eventual) Kai Winn, characters who prove to be very sharp thorns in Sisko's side for the entire series.

Season 2:

Out of Bajor, opposition to the Federation's presence grows, and the station becomes a target for those wanting Sisko and his crew forced out. Later, Starfleet begins to have its own problems in the form of the Maquis- renegade Starfleet officers/Federation citizens who begin killing the Cardassians who battle them for control of an area of space known as the Badlands.

Continuous journeys into the Gamma Quadrant have not gone unnoticed by a massive organization known simply as The Dominion, who shows how far they are willing to go to prevent the Federation from entering their area of space.

Season 3:

The Dominion has become a threat greater than anyone could have imagined, and with Deep Space Nine at the forefront, Sisko brings the experimental ship U.S.S. Defiant in to stand guard. Hoping to make peace with The Dominion, they head into their space, but find that The Dominion only wants one thing- total control.
To compound the problem, Odo, DS9's security chief and a valued member of Sisko's crew becomes conflicted by his personal connection to the leaders of The Dominion, who continue to pose a great threat throughout the season.

Season 4:

The Klingons, nervous about the threat The Dominion poses, turn on everyone around them, believing The Dominion has its hands in every organization. To assist, Sisko, now a full Captain, brings in Starfleet's lone Klingon Officer, Lieutenant Commander Worf, late of the recently destroyed U.S.S. Enterprise-D, whose expertise is valued greatly.

Starfleet faces three separate problems- The Dominion threat, a hostile takeover on Earth by a Starfleet Admiral (and Sisko's mentor), and The Maquis- now led by a member of Sisko's crew who has betrayed him, Lt.Cmdr Michael Eddington.
Meanwhile, Odo's personal connection to The Dominion comes to a head when his actions against his own people catch up with him. This season is also notable for giving us two great pieces of Trek- the episode 'The Visitor', and the great character Weyoun. Also, Dennis McCarthy's Emmy-winning theme undergoes a new arrangement to complement the new opening title sequence.

Season 5:

The Klingons don't know that The Dominion has infiltrated their own, so Sisko and Worf hatch a plan to expose the deception, and hopefully make peace with the Kilngons. Sisko's connection to Bajor has been growing now for years, and worries about Bajor's safety due to the Dominion threat, which becomes even greater when the Cardassians join them in an effort to take over all-things Federation. This turn of events prompts Sisko to mine the entrance to the wormhole, preventing The Dominion from increasing their forces, and also leads to an all-out attack on Deep Space Nine, an attack in which Sisko evacuates all Starfleet crew members out, leaving the Bajorans alone. He is confident, however , that The Dominion will not harm them thanks to his convincing Bajor to sign a non-aggression treaty with them.

The Dominion-Federation war has begun.

This season is notable for the 30th Anniversary episode that sees Sisko's crew travelling to the past to interact with the original Enterprise crew, and to a far lesser degree, the introduction of those new, more formal looking uniforms seen in the "First Contact" film.

Season 6:

The war is going quite well....for The Dominion. The Federation is weakened, control of Deep Space Nine is strong, and preparations are in order to bring the wormhole mines down. Sisko, forced to sit on the sidelines and watch his beloved crew fight without him on a few missions, develops a plan to re-take Deep Space Nine before the mines come down. His plan is aided by his son and the friends he left behind on the station, the non-Federation citizens who sabotage the Dominion's plans. After a long, bloody battle (and some devine intervention on Sisko's behalf) the station is in Federation control once again.

The war is far from over, but for now, things look somewhat hopeful for DS9's crew. A Wedding, a trip into science-fiction's racially charged past, and the sudden loss of a beloved Starfleet officer close out this season, returning the crew, and Bajor, to the depths of depair due to the not-so-devine intervention of Sisko's greatest enemy.

Season 7:

The war takes a back seat to the inner journey Sisko must take in order to make things right. Bajor's spirit has fallen into darkness with Sisko's absence and the loss of the wormhole. When Sisko finally makes sense of it all, with the help of an old friend with a new presence, he is able to return things to normal, and concentrate on defeating The Dominion once and for all. A wacky baseball game, a dangerous cult, and a Cardassian rebellion add to this season, building up to the end of the war and the final showdown between Sisko and his greatest enemy, Gul Dukat. The crew begins to separate and move on to other things, but the one person who can't move on is Sisko's son, who will always wait for his father to come home.
