I read Aaron Beierle's DVD review of Apes Part One: Planet Of The Apes at http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=899 and...
just a random easily dismissed complaint.
how the hell can the planet of the apes remake get a higher rating than the original, especially since the remake was so awful? jesus. marky mark is no heston, that manliest of manly mans, and the remake is not only bad, it's one of the worst remakes ever made, and that's saying something.
the original is classic. begins and ends well with equal awesomeness in the middle... oh man, you guys are absoludicrously crazy. the remake was crap. the heston original is one of the best scifis of all time.

I somewhat disagree--I thought the remake had several virtues, and I really enjoy it; I'm convinced that every season has one or two films that are arbitrarily saddled with vitriol from the public that they don't deserve (this season's was THE ISLAND) and this was one of them. Having said that, though, even I have to agree that it does not rank over the original.

Aaron rated the original 3 1/2 stars and the remake 3 1/2 stars.

The "Recommended" vs. "Highly Recommended" incorporates the quality of the DVD in the rating. Regardless of your thoughts on the movie, the remake got a much better DVD transfer and assortment of supplements than the original did.

different reviewer, i know. another weirdness: two of the planet of the apes sequels are considered better movies than the original. mysterious.
another mystery is how the 35th anniversary edition (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000TPA4C/102-7167259-9380164?v=glance&n=130&s=dvd&v=glance) of planet of the apes is not reviewed, as far as i can tell. i don't know if the transfer is better or worse, but it does have the behind the planet of the apes documentary on it which also has a higher score than the original.
INSANITY.

The reviews in question were written long ago but I venture to say that the DVD features of the first POTA were lacking compared to the original. Also, since there are different reviewers handling the sequels, there are bound to be personal differences in ratings (there's no mystery involved and it isn't "crazy" or "insanity" to suggest that each DVD was handled for it's own merits).
As far as not having a review for a specific title, keep in mind that studios don't always send everything and many reviewers have a full plate without dropping cash on everything "a random easily dismissed complaint(ant)" wants to see. (Aaron's written over 2500 reviews, the champ as it were, and generally offers up a decent idea of what a DVD is about for those who care. Even if you disagree on the quality of the movie itself, he offers up a nice view of the DVD.)
