The folks over at Home Theatre Forum are having a field day on the video transfers of both the new editions of "The Sound of Music" and "Oklahoma!" . Saying that Fox Home Video really hasn't improved or made worse transfers that should have looked better than their first DVD editions. I had really hoped to buy these discs - but with what people have been noting and generally just trashing the new DVD's - this looks like a no-sale for me (sigh - :( )

I'd like to see other reviews of the discs and see if the comments are just as negative.

Given the treatment and precision on film tranferral to digital video notably from MGM and Warner Bros. these discs seem like a step backword for 20th Century Fox Home Video. (I'm afraid to see what a remastered anamorphic "The King and I" Special Edition will look like, maybe by then Fox will have gotten their act together).

Don't buy Oklahoma! The video transfer is AWFUL! I was shocked. I guess I've gotten so used to the fantastic transfers Warner Bros. is giving us of all the MGM musicals that I expected the same - esepecially for the Todd-AO version.

But the transfers of BOTH versions are lousy - unwatchable. I gave it to my parents (they'll never notice how bad the image quality is). The extras are also a disappointment. I had hoped for a nice side-by-side comparison of the two versions - since the songs are pre-recorded, you can sync up both versions and watch for the subtle performance differences - but all we get is a very rudimentary explanation of why there are two versions.

So I'd wait for the HD versions - hopefully then we'll see something watchable.
