They're on sale at Wal-Mart for $10 each... and I'm thinking about picking them up. Would you guys recommend the movies? What about the DVD's?

Yes.

You could search the Review section here at DVDTalk and see what they got as well.

The discs themselves are very weak for being 2 discs each. Mostly kids stuff. The movies are good though and worth picking as a blind buy if you're into fantasy or well written children stories. Do yourself a favor and pick up the books as well.

The extras pretty much are a waste of time across the board (with the exception of some deleted scenes). The first movie is the weakest, and does not have that great of a transfer (a bit too soft). The movies and transfers get better with each film, but all 3 are worth checking out--and word is that Goblet of Fire is the best yet.

I think that each movie has gotten better and better. Yet even Sorcerer's Stone is quite an enjoyable fantasy film and got me interested in reading the books.

Excellent movies. But the extras, aside from deleted scenes, are pretty kid oriented and useless in general.

I didn't really like the first one. Never saw the second, so can't comment. The third one was better, but still not one that I would really care to watch again.

I wouldn't reccommend a blind buy ... I enjoyed the first one, but it didn't hold up much to subsequent viewings ... I disliked the second one enough that I missed seeing the third one in theaters, but when I finally did see it, it's really good. (I don't think you'd actually need to see the second one to get it, either, unless there's a character introduced in it that comes back in #3, which I don't remember there being).

Can't speak to the DVDs either way, as I have none of them.

They are and the movies are better after you've read the books, IMO. And, being in Canada, you can get the original English version. They "translated" English into English for the US version (even changed the name of the first book) so I had them imported.

The films are great, but the DVDs' bonus features are too child-oriented.

I'd recommend renting them, if you like them even in the least bit, read the books, they are absolutely great, for kids or adults. I agree that you'll enjoy the movies more after reading the books, since some things in the movies aren't fully explained to great lengths.

Never read the books, as I assumed it was pretty much kiddie stuff, but I did blind buy the first one on DVD and thought it was pretty good. IMO, the movies have gotten better with each sequel. Goblet of Fire will be the first one I go to see in the theater.
