11-07-05, 11:00 AM
Welcome to round one of the MusicTalk Draft Tournament! In this thread (http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showthread.php?t=442618), the players drafted a virtual “collection” of ten albums. Now, it is up to you, the MusicTalk community, to vote on which player has drafted the best collection.

For round 1, all the players have been randomly paired up. In order to vote, you need to reply to this post telling me who you think has the best lineup. Your vote will not count unless you vote on every pair! In addition, once you post your votes, you CANNOT edit that post for any reason. Edited voting posts will not be counted.

Players in the game are also allowed to vote. Optionally, they are also allowed to post to this thread telling everybody why they think you should vote for their collection.

So, let the voting begin! Voting ends on Tuesday, November 8th, at the exact time of the timestamp of this post. Match-ups will be listed in the first reply to this post.

Good luck to all the participants!

This was rough. Every list seems to have one album I really hate, 6-7 albums I really like and 2-3 albums I REALLY love. Feels like a coin flip sometimes. The one guy I would have voted for if he'd been against almost any other list is Giles. I feel almost bad not voting for him.

Also, one day for voting seems awfully short. I never played any of the other list games, but I think with a little bit longer (in later rounds at least) we could actually listen to more of the music (I sure couldn't get to everything in the past two weeks).

Wow, that is a lot of matches!

A few coments on my matchup:
10. mano365 vs. ryuryu2949

mano365
1. Smashing Pumpkins: Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness
2. Interpol: Turn on the Bright Lights
3. Led Zeppelin: Led Zeppelin [box set]
4. The Killers: Hot Fuss (Limited Edition)
5. Queen: A Night at the Opera
6. Santana: Santana
7. Big L: The Big Picture
8. Jay-Z: Reasonable Doubt
9. Mocean Worker: Mixed Emotional Features
10. Cake: Prolonging the Magic

ryuryu2949
1. The Beatles: Ultimate Box Set [box set]
2. Guns N' Roses: Appetite for Destruction
3. 2Pac: All Eyez On Me
4. Wilco: Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
5. Weezer: Weezer ("Blue Album") (Deluxe Edition)
6. Beck: Odelay
7. A Tribe Called Quest: The Low End Theory
8. Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds: Live at Luther College
9. Bob Marley: Legend
10. Goldie: Timeless

With regard to Mano's collection, I like his Pumpkins pick, don't like his Interpol pick, and despise his Killers pick. I love Jay-Z and Big L as MCs, but Reasonable doubt is a notch below Blueprint Vol. 1 and Big L's album was a huge letdown compared to his talent.

As for our boxsets, I really like Zeppelin, but they can't hang with the Beatles. That one is almost unfair to Mano. Props for the Queen pick, when you could have chickened out and taken one of the greatest hits collection. Cake is ok, not sure about that specific album. Havent heard of Moclean workers, but I will check it out. Nothing on his list approaches the energy of Weezerm, the vibe of Tribe, or the originality of Wilco and Beck. And Appetite for Destruction kicks serious ass.

I had been thinking about my picks since the final round ended.

Let's see.. as for a reason to vote for me... Well, you can't perfectly sync any of my competors cd's to the movie The Wizard of Oz... It works with my first pick. ;)

And I second San Dimas High School Football ruling!

And I agree about the voting being hard. I just wanted to say to those I didn't vote for. I didn't because I hated your collections. It usually broke down to your competetitor having an album that I absolutely loved.

My thoughts came down like Mordred..

And I was almost voting for Giles... but with whaaat having Zep II and Tapestry.. that made it tough to vote against whaat.

1 - ChrisKnudsen (Weezer and DaftPunk sealed it for me)
2- TripWire (tough matchup, but this competition can really use some edgier picks)
3- monkish (again, very tough, but I don't like Liz Phair and love, love, love Songs in the Key of Life)
4- badlydrawnboy (sorry, not close; U2, Prince, Van Morrison, Pearl Jam and the Chili Peppers--wow, great lineup)
5- djlinus (very close, but flaming lips and midnight marauders made my mind up)
6- Flynn (steal with that Pink Floyd pick, and the Travis pick was inspired as well)
7- jimdrix (so far, the best matchup in the competition. not much I can say here, except Who's Next and Revolver are the best two albums in this matcup, and both are jimdrix's)
8- sweetbabyjames (Johnny Cash and the Boss, a good 1-2 punch)
9- vryce (sorry auto, but you gave yourself a tough matchup; Dark Side and Dummy are two of the top 10 albums in the entire draft)
10- ryuryu2949 (with all due respect, the Killers in round 4? are you kidding me?)
11- whaat (good matchup; I love pet sounds, and Wagner was an anti-semite)
12- add for dvd (NWA and Buena Vista, who would have thought those two would go so well together)
13- cleaver (wow, great collection; and of course, "Jim Morrison is a drunken buffoon posing as a poet")
14- maxfisher (great Queen and Dinosaur Jr albums)
15- morded (ran out of things to say)
16- Aphex Twin (in the battle of Apex albums, the one with Boy/Girl song wins; oh, and a little Miles and Nas never hurt anybody).

The only comments I will make on my match up are relating to DJ's #5 and my #1

5. DJLinus vs. orangecrush18

DJLinus
5. The Cure: Disintegration

orangecrush18
1. The Cure: Pornography (Deluxe Edition)

Disintegration is one great album, but it features the only Cure song I hate: Pictures of you. I think that Pornography is a consistently better record.

Also, if you haven't heard the Faint you should download some songs from their website. They deserve more attention than they get and are better than most of their label mates.

Round 1

My votes:
1. ChrisKnudsen
2. TripWire
3. illenium
4. Numanoid
5. DJ Linus
6. Flynn
7. Drexl
8. cdollaz
9. auto
10. ryuryu2949
11. Giles
12. ADD for DVD
13. The-Bus
14. maxfisher
15. Hiro11
16. Fandango

Please only view my reasons after you've voted yourself.

My reasons:

1. Neutral Milk Hotel sealed the deal. Unfortunately, I am not familiar with almost every single Hollowgen pick. I may know about them, but I have not heard them.
2. Lokimok's picks are all classics, but TripWire picked albums by some of my favorite bands.
3. This one was really difficult. illenium won by a hair.
4. Another tough one. I vote for Numanoid on this one because it seems like the ten albums have an overall theme.
5. This one wasn't easy. As a list of artists, I prefer orangecrush, but we're voting on albums and DJLinus takes it.
6. This one was easy. (No offense, Rogue). I like all of Rogue's picks (well, not #3) but Flynn's tastes resonate closely with mine.
7. Drexl gets it by a hair 'cuase of Nirvana.
8. I don't like Rush. cdollaz still gets it for great picks. IMO SBJ picked the best box set out of anyone but I don't know much of his middle picks.
9. Another tough one. auto's Lips, Heads, and Soul picks sealed the deal.
10. Great picks overall. And the Beatles box set did not go into the equation for this one.
11. Giles's newer picks struck a chord.
12. Damfino had three picks I've actually heard. ADD had three, but one of them was Nevermind. Goes to ADD.
13. Go me!
14. I'm not a big Floyd fan, but maxfisher's picks I liked a lot. Critically, deadlax might win, but I haven't heard his picks.
15. Another tough one. Hiro11 wins because of his last-round pick.
16. This should be interesting. Fandango's list doesn't have a single flaw. As much as I love Apex's picks, Fandango gets it. I would've liked to see these two guys compete in other brackets, as I think either of them could've gone quite far (in my votes, at least).

8. Sweet Baby James (remastered) Thanks for the vote.

This was rough. Every list seems to have one album I really hate, 6-7 albums I really like and 2-3 albums I REALLY love. Feels like a coin flip sometimes.
This is exactly how I felt when making my picks. Some of my picks came down to just a particular fondness of a certain album. Anywho, here are my picks-

1. Hallowgen
2. TripWire
3. illennium
4. BadlyDrawnBoy
5. orangecrush18
6. Rogue588
7. Drexl
8. Sweet Baby James:wave:
9. Vryce

1. Hollowgen vs. ChrisKnudsen
ChrisKnudsen

Tough one, as honestly there's only 1 cd of the list of 20 I own.

2. TripWire vs. Lokimok
Lokimok
Another close one, as top 5 for Trip Wire is ace, yet he lost ground in the
2nd half, whereas Lokimok started slow and came back strong in the last 5

3. monkish vs. illennium
illenium
mokfish has a lot of older, stuff and as I'm a younger generation that doesn't appeal.

4. Numanoid vs. BadlyDrawnBoy
BadlyDrawnBoy
Anyone who picks a username after a band is an idiot!! :)

I like Numanoid's picks a lot, but I had to go with myself.

5. DJLinus vs. orangecrush18
DJLinus
Anyone who recognises the genius that is Jarvis Cocker gets my vote. then he adds in Tribe Called Quest,
James, and the beasties.

6. Flynn vs. Rogue588
Rogue588
A bitch of a pick, unlike the 1st group, I have 10 of 20 in this list, so its harder.
My vote goes to Roque, but I was very impressed with Flynn's list esp as he came in late
each day with his votes. and wasn't in the mix for the early morning shuffle .

7. jimdrix vs. Drexl
jimdrix
a pretty even matchup here, both have some greats, and some more edgy stuff, but I'll give it to
jimdrix

8. Sweet Baby James vs. cdollaz
cdollaz
As I watched these come in SBJ had a real solid pick but I think that cdollaz complete collection
just shades it. Esp for Teenager of the Year.

9. auto vs. Vryce
Vryce
As a whole auto's collection is ace, but I think Vryce has a much stronger setlist.

10. mano365 vs. ryuryu2949
mano365
i have a fear of DMB, I don't think he's value add. I'll admit that the Santana in mano365 almost ruled out
the DMB neg, but the resto of the set is hot.

11. whaaat vs. Giles
Giles
I knew all along I'd be with Giles on his picks, as he and I have very similar tastes, and he went more
with his heart on the choices. Anyone who picks Boo Radley's as his nr 1, when pretty few people have heard
of them is brave.

12. Damfino vs. A.D.D. for DVD
A.D.D. for DVD
Overall a much stronger set. couple of weak links but appeals to me.

13. cleaver vs. The Bus
The bus
I think the bus is my overall top pick.. So that's a simple one.

14. maxfisher vs. deadlax
maxfisher
did I say the bus was my top pick, I hope he and maxfisher are not matched up in the early rounds.

15. Hiro11 vs. Mordred
Mordred
Real nice collection very rounded.

16. Fandango vs. Apex Twin
Fandango
Another matchup that I'd rather have seen later in the game.. Both excellent picks, but Fandango actually
has another top top set.

1. Hollowgen vs. ChrisKnudsen
ChrisKnudsen - I am sorry to say I have only heard 5 of Hollowgen's picks. I must be too young. Also, Weezer and Slayer push me over to Chris' side.

2. TripWire vs. Lokimok
Tripwire - Again, my age favors newer bands. But Lokimok has some GREAT records. The Violent Femmes really tipped the scales for me and the Bjork set is super.

3. monkish vs. illennium
monkish - Elvis Costello and They Might Be Giants swung it in his/her favor.

4. Numanoid vs. BadlyDrawnBoy
numanoid - This was really tough for me, I don't like Neil Diamond at all, but Devo and Duran Duran are both just great.

5. DJLinus vs. orangecrush18
orangecrush18 - The Deluxe editions tipped it my way -wink- . Also, I listen to the Mars Volta at least one every day at work.

6. Flynn vs. Rogue588
Flynn - #1, 5, 7 and 10. Rogue's #5 and #10 nearly stole this for me.

7. jimdrix vs. Drexl
Drexl - #1, #2 & #5. Jimdrix's #5 & #7 made this decision tough.

8. Sweet Baby James vs. cdollaz
cdollaz - soooo close, but he just has more records I love. BTW - I almost chose Sweet Baby James simply for his #1 pick.

9. auto vs. Vryce
Vryce - his #2 is sublime.

10. mano365 vs. ryuryu2949
Ryuryu2949 - I vote for you for the same reason I want to vote against you: you stole more of my future picks than anyone else. And not just in this draft

11. whaaat vs. Giles
whaaat - choice #1

12. Damfino vs. A.D.D. for DVD
damfino - #1, 2, 3, 4, 6 & 10. That is all

13. cleaver vs. The Bus
The Bus - I don't like cleaver's #3, 4, or 6. The Bus' #1, 2, & 3 did it for me.

14. maxfisher vs. deadlax
maxfisher - #2 & #5

15. Hiro11 vs. Mordred
mordred - #1, 5, 7 & 8.

16. Fandango vs. Apex Twin
Apex Twin - tough, but the GREAT jazz wins out.

Okay, here we go.

Round 1: ChrisKnudsen (Dr. Octagon and Weezer slightly trumps Peter Gabriel)
Round 2: TripWire (as much as I adore VU & Nico, TW's list had more albums I love)
Round 3: monkish (XTC, TMBG, EC ; the Stone Roses disc is one of my all-time faves, but the bulk of illennium's list is made up of albums that I want to listen to, but haven't yet. Bummer.)
Round 4: BadlyDrawnBoy (as much as I admire Numanoid's list, two words: Purple Rain)
Round 5: DJLinus (quite possibly the best collection in this game :) )
Round 6: Rogue588 ("Lights please..." A Christmas album was a ballsy choice that paid off; it helps that I dug out the Christmas music last week)
Round 7: jimdrix (Man, this is the toughest one so far. But considering I'm wearing my Revolver shirt right now...)
Round 8: cdollaz (The Clash vs. Cash. Now, there's a toss-up)
Round 9: Vryce (same problem as Round 3)
Round 10: ryuryu2949 (Tribe. 'Nuff said. Plus Goldie was a great choice)
Round 11: Giles (Can't believe the Muppets beat out Pet Sounds, but the inclusion of Yaz gives it the edge)
Round 12: Damfino (chalk it up to my personal bias against Nevermind being the #1 everything)
Round 13: The Bus (Ol' Blue Eyes, the Smiths, and Miles Davis? Yep.)
Round 14: maxfisher (69 reasons to choose this one)
Round 15: Mordred (PE #1 gets the job done. That and I hate Sonic Youth)
Round 16: Fandango (Great mix of electronic and hip-hop)

Now, to see how I'm doing thus far...

Pulp is one of my all-time favorite groups. It does suck being an American listening to them because a lot of the English references are lost on me, but JC is indeed a genius. And I'm rather shocked that This Is Hardcore wasn't chosen in the draft, as that's an excellent album.

A word about my opponent orangecrush18's list: it's really good and I'd likely vote for it myself (depending on what it was up against). The voting's fairly close so far, so I shant concede. :)

nobody take this personally, as i dissect my rationale. every list has a few if not many good albums on it, but being as this is a preference vote... well, here we go:

This Round’s Match-ups

1. Hollowgen vs. ChrisKnudsen

my pick: ChrisKnudsen

rationale: more variety in style. while Hollowgen had many 'classic' albums which i love, ChrisKnudsen has my vote for adding variety to the list.

2. TripWire vs. Lokimok

my pick: Lokimok

rationale: again, variety. TripWire's list is mostly electronic or metal influenced music (with the exceptions being Muse and Violent Femmes).

3. monkish vs. illennium

my pick: monkish

rationale: variety. even though i haven't heard some albums on both of these lists, monkish shows more variety. although, i must give credit to illennium for the Kraftwerk pick! (i'm even going against what is possibly my favorite album ever, Kid A...)

4. Numanoid vs. BadlyDrawnBoy

my pick: BadlyDrawnBoy

rationale: this is one instance where i'm picking based on the fact that i have not heard a very large majority of Numanoid's picks. that's not to discount BDB's picks, since he has many albums on his list that i LOVE.

5. DJLinus vs. orangecrush18

my pick: DJLinus (by a very narrow margin)

rationale: although he didn't have as much variety as orangecrush IMO, the mere presence of James 'Laid' (eeking in at number 10) on DJL's list sealed the deal. 'Laid' is without a doubt one of my favorite albums of all time.

6. Flynn vs. Rogue588

my pick: Flynn

rationale: although i greatly admire Rogue588's variety, i simply am not familiar with most of his choices. thus, i have to vote with the familiar. it's only on my own ignorance that i award this vote, because, even though i like all three, i would hesitate to put Radiohead, Coldplay and Travis all on the same list. however, Sam Cooke was a spectacular choice.

7. jimdrix vs. Drexl

my pick: imdrix

rationale: another great match up. even though 'Graceland' is an absolute favorite of mine (and 'In Utero' very nearly so), the variety combined with the 'classic' appeal of almost all of imdrix's choices lands him my vote. and although i like McLachlan (and 'Fumbling' is her best album), she doesn't play in the same league as any artist on imdrix's list. and, i'm not really fond of 'Carnival' - 'The Eccleftic' was much better IMO.

8. Sweet Baby James vs. cdollaz

my pick: Sweet Baby James

rationale: both of these lists round out with albums i haven't heard, unfortunately, so my voting is partially based on ignorance. i have heard more on SBJ's list, plus i'm just more partial to his list. 'London Calling' is monumental, Radiohead is probably my favorite group - i love most of the artists on cdollaz's list, but the albums he chose are not the ones i would choose for almost all of 'em.

9. auto vs. Vryce

my pick: Vryce

rationale: i absolutely love some of the albums on auto's list and there are many albums on his list with oodles of street cred, but his list is too loaded with fringe rock - or, to put it another way, not enough variety.

10. mano365 vs. ryuryu2949

my pick: ryuryuryuryuryuryuryuryuryuryuryu2949

rationale: again, i love some of mano's choices, but the Killers is dubious IMO. plus, ryu snagged a whole slew of Beatles music and included Bob Marley, one of my faves. (not to mention a recent addition to my favorite list: Yankee Hotel Foxtrot..)

11. whaaat vs. Giles

my pick: whaaat

rationale: have i mentioned that radiohead is quite possibly my favorite group? whaaat snagged radiohead and quite possibly the best of marley's albums. i vastly admire Giles' variety (The Muppet Movie sndtrk and the only classical album on these lists) but whaaat has a list with two personal favorites plus many other great albums.

12. Damfino vs. A.D.D. for DVD

my pick: ADD for DVD

rationale: VERY VERY VERY difficult decision. it goes to ADD based on his greater diversity - throwing in BVSC swung it ADD's way. this, quite possibly, (out of the lists i've seen so far) should've been the final match-up because i love both of these lists so much.

13. cleaver vs. The Bus

my pick: cleaver

rationale: i haven't heard some of the albums on The Bus' list and i like every album on cleaver's list, so he takes it by my ignorance. although, The Bus' choice of Sigur Ros was a spectacular one...

14. maxfisher vs. deadlax

my pick: maxfisher

rationale: i love '69 Love Songs' and 'Funeral', but those aren't what sold max's list. it was, regrettably, the fact that i'm not familiar with all but one of deadlax's albums. i love many of his artists but i haven't heard some of his choices enough times or at all to give them my favor.

15. Hiro11 vs. Mordred

my pick: Mordred

rationale: 'Blood on the Tracks', 'Thriller', 'Back in Black', 'It Takes..' geezus. i don't know how these choices weren't stolen away by other people during the draft. how he swung so many favorites is beyond me. nice work, Mordred. Hiro11, excellent choices as well. Mordred's list just contains MANY MANY personal favorites.

16. Fandango vs. Aphex Twin

my pick: Aphex Twin

rationale: more variety and more 'classic' albums. 'Kind of Blue' was an excellent choice.

Even though I play the hell out of Chris' Daft Punk pick, I gotta go with Zep and the Stones.

TripWire vs. Lokimok

Lokimok's combination of the Beatles and Parliament can't beat the 1-2-3 punch of NIN, DM and Bjork.

My Votes, including commentary (gives everyone something to read, right?):

1. Me - I chose some of what I consider to be the absolute best, and some that is. So there! :p
2. Lokimok - Rain Dogs is an amazing album. I'd listen to it over everything on anyone's lists.
3. illenium - 8/10 are on my fav albums list.
4. Numanoid - this was probably the toughest decision for me. If BBB's Joy Division was Heart & Soul, then it probably would have won my vote.
5. DJLinus - I like this mix & it is or was all pretty eccentric stuff. Which is what I prefer.
6. Rogue588 - ESB soundtrack is a deal closer.
7. jimdrix - Picking "Captain Fantastic" is pretty bold. My mom would love you.
8. cdollaz - Another player who stole some of my picks. "London Calling" could carry your team...
9. auto - Again, just a better mix IMHO.
10. ryuryu2949 - Pick one GNR, pick "Appetite".
11. whaaat - LZ II is my second fav, next to Graffiti.
12. Damfino - Again, I just like your mix better.
13. The Bus - Even though you opted for a box set, you still have a list of non-stop amazing albums.
14. maxfisher - See comments for The Bus.
15. Hiro 11 - "Alone Again Or" is the top played song on my iTunes list.
16. Aphex Twin - I listen to something from the Richard D. James album every day, and I'm new to Loveless, which I might add, is amazing.

even if i don't win enough votes to go anywhere, at least i can still have some fun with this!

OK, I'm just going to do this via "quick reply."

1. ChrisKnudsen. Hollowgen has my favorite Stones album and a solid Bowie pick, but I have to say I'm not a huge Zepellin fan, and ChrisKnudsen's combination of Neutral Milk Hotel, T. Rex, and Daft Punk makes it easy to overlook his Slayer pick.

2. Lokimok. Neither of these is really in line with my tastes, but ultimately TripWire's collection is just too hard for my taste. I prefer Parliament and P.J. Harvey.

3. illennium. monkish has some great albums, including XTC and Stevie Wonder but illennium, well, that's me.

4. Numanoid. Holy crap, this one is tough. BadlyDrawnBoy has an amazing Jam box set, plus Joy Division and Prince. On the other hand, I can't stand U2, and Pearl Jam, George Michael, and the Peppers don't do much for me. Numanoid has at least six albums I haven't heard. In fact, I don't own a single one of his ten. But the list is just very cool, and I intend to check out a number of them.

5. DJLinus. This one's easy for me. The Velvet Underground, Flaming Lips, Pulp, even Postal Service as a legitimately great album that makes a nice guilty pick on a top-10 list. Despite the fact that James will always be associated with a particularly bad breakup, his list takes it.

6. Rogue588. I was going to vote for Flynn, but then I saw that he picked The Dave Matthews Band and U2. After seeing that, all I could think about was how much I like that Pet Shop Boys record...

7. jimdrix. Some true classics here: Revolver, Let It Bleed, Ziggy Stardust, Fear of a Black Planet. jimdrix could take the tournament with a list like this.

8. cdollaz. cdollaz got OK Computer, which means he wasn't snoozing when the competition started. He then snagged an excellent Elvis Costello record, the top Clash, and Teenager of the Year. All of this means I can overlook the U2 pick... for now.

9. auto. auto definitely has one of my favorite lists, and Vryce squandered a pick with Plumb, an album I actually own from my songwriter-obsessed college years and think is just okay for the genre.

10. ryuryu2949. The DMB pick makes this a difficult choice, but ultimately GnR and Weezer carry it for me, despite the added fact that the mano365's Interpol record is one of my favorites.

11. Giles. With the Chemical Brothers, DJ Shadow, and an awesome Morcheeba record, Giles takes this one. I have two Boo Radleys records but not Wake Up, Boo. Better get on that...

12. A.D.D. for DVD. On the strength of March 16-20, 1992 alone.

13. The Bus. The Tricky record beats the Massive record, and The Bus' list is just cooler.

14. maxfisher. I love deadlax's Billy Bragg and Wilco record (anyone who hasn't heard it should check out "California Stars"). But I also love Eels, Dinosaur Jr., and Pavement. Again, I'll look the other way as U2 slips onto the list.

15. Hiro11. This one is not close for me. Sonic Youth, Husker Du, The Streets (amazing album!), The Shins... Hiro11's list reflects my tastes well.

16. Ah, crap. Two amazing lists, with overlapping artists no less. I'm seriously staring at both lists now with no clue which way to vote. Either of these guys could win the contest and I'd be happy. I'm basically tossing a coin here. Let's go with Aphex Twin.

I hate to vote against what is probably my favorite VU album, but Hollowgen's list is so solid. I was very happy to see Jonathan Richman make the game & The Slits is a killer pick.

2. Lokimok
Oh my god! This is a fantastic list! Every choice a must-own!

3. monkish
Tough call. Marquee Moon is a favorite & the reissue cd only makes it better with "Little Johnny Jewel" - also like the Autobahn pick, but Beatles/Charles/Mingus are hard to beat

4. Numanoid
Mainly for the DEVO

5. DJLinus
Can't beat Peel Slowly - my 1st boxset pick

6. Flynn
I think Flynn picked the wrong Lennon album, & I love Rogue588's last 2 picks, but I can't vote for Meatloaf

7. jimdrix
Nice to see Graceland & Wilburys, but jimdrix's list is so classic.

8. cdollaz
The best Costello & excellent Waits, Heads, & Clash picks

9. auto
I like Vryce's 1st 4 picks a lot, but Freak Out!, Trout Mask Replica, Horses, the best Pavement album, AND the Talking Heads Brick!?!?

Well... I did have a nice long post with explanations of my picks and everything, until said post somehow vanished when I tried to send. Grrrr. Triple grrr, even. So... since it's late, I'll just do a quick 'n' dirty picks list, and list a few albums that tipped the scales for me.

1) Hollowgen (George Harrison, the Band, Peter Gabriel)
2) Lokimok (Tom Waits, Parliament)
3) monkish (everything) :D
4) Numanoid (Sparks, Esquivel)
5) orangecrush18 (Beck, Miles, Johnny Cash)
6) Flynn (Sam Cooke, Elliott Smith)
7) jimdrix (Beatles, Bowie, Neil Young)
8) cdollaz (first five picks)
9) auto (Pixies, Replacements, Zappa)
10) ryuryu2949 (Wilco, Beck)
11) whaaat (Beach Boys, Zombies, Radiohead)
12) Damfino (Beatles, Costello, X)
13) The Bus (Miles, Sinatra/Jobim)
14) deadlax (first five picks, Big Star)
15) Hiro11 (Ramones, Steely Dan)
16) Aphex Twin (Beatles, Coltrane)

I didn't have time to do anything but vote yesterday, but wanted to comment on a couple of the matchups...

5. DJLinus vs. orangecrush18 - This was probably the toughest matchup for me. In the end, the combination of Velvet Underground and James swayed me. Peel Slowly and See was the first box set I ever bought and I've always loved it. And I've always felt like Laid was a beautiful, underrated album.

6. Flynn vs. Rogue588 - This was another really tough one. If I ranked all 20 of the albums, Flynn would have a couple at the top (Radiohead, Floyd, Lennon), but would also have several at the very bottom (DMB and U2 - I love U2, but wish they'd stopped after Pop). For having a more consistent list, and for the Queen boxset and ESB soundtrack, Rogue588 got my vote.

8. Sweet Baby James vs. cdollaz - Both high quality lists, but the combo of Unearthed, Nebraska and Grace won me over.

9. auto vs. Vryce - This might possibly have been my toughest choice, if not for a sole chink in Vryce's armor. I hate Jagged Little Pill. Other than that, 19 very solid choices.

11. whaaat vs. Giles - slightly superior overall list vs. very solid list with The Muppet Movie soundtrack. For such a highly original, nostalgic and excellent choice, Giles gets the edge.

You're killing me auto.

Sorry.

It was a tough decision but, IMHO, you picked a lot of great artists but didn't pick their best albums.

I would have picked:

R.E.M.: Murmur (or any of their first three albums)
Morphine: Cure for Pain
Beck: Sea Change

I like Mars Volta but they haven't recorded a great album yet.

I loved your Faint, DCD, Miles Davis & Cash picks.

I appreceiate the honesty. I had a tough choice making my pics. I didn't want to just try and secure the best of the best albums by the best artists. I did that on a couple of picks, but did so because it fit what I was going through with my list.

I was picking albums that helped shape my musical tastes presently. Each album I picked has had a strong influence in my life.

My 10th pick was gutsy, and one 99% of the people might not know, but it was part of my grand design.

I figured I'd suffer some with that pick and one or two others, and it seems I was right.

If I go out this round, at least I had fun and know that I picked an important list to me.

Since others are giving the reasons why they picked, I thought I'd follow suit.

1. Hollowgen - While I liked a few picks from ChrisKnudsen, Hallowegen had more albums I enjoyed.

2. TripWire - As strong ast Lokimok's list was, TripWire had Violator, my favorite DM album. Throw in a strong boxset from Bjork and Violent Femmes with a little Moby. Hard to pass up.

3. illennium - Liz Phair and the Pixies sealed this choice for me.

4. BadlyDrawnBoy - Even though I love Rio. Ten, Purple Rain and The Josuha Tree stole this race.

5. orangecrush18 - Tough Choices. Both had a strong Cure album. And I hold Laid up as one of my favorite albums, but I had to give it to orangecrush with his REM and DM choices.

6. Rogue588 - ESB.

7. Drexl - Had to give it to Drexl with The Wall and Fumbling Towards Ecstacy. Awesome bringing in Sarah McLachlan.

8. cdollaz - Even though I don't care for Rush, the rest of cdollaz's picks made up for it. Boy and London Calling stole the race.

9. Vryce - Tough choice.. ;) Honestly I won't make up a justification... Everyone votes for themself.. I did like auto's list though.

10. mano365 - Queen and Zep.

11. whaaat - Zep II and Carole King sealed the choice for this race.

12. Damfino - Abbey Road. Classic album with a memorable cover that everyone seems to know.

13. The Bus - Tough choice. Both had Zep, but cleaver had a bit of rap on his list that isn't my taste in music. And Zep IV is a classic.

14. maxfisher - Achtung Baby was my first time seeing U2 live. Awesome album and concert. Mix in some Floyd and you've got my pick.

15. Mordred - Mordred had Public Enemy which I don't care for.. But with a strong 1..2..3 punch from Jackson, Metallica and AC/DC... knockout..

16. Fandango - Both had a good Aphex Twin pick. But with Vespertine and Dookie, my nod went to Fandango.

I was thinking my REM pick wouldn't be as popular as murmer. I chose AFTP because it was the first record I ever bought. I played the tape until it just didn't sound right. My Morphine pick was tough as well. I went with what I thought most people would have heard. And I have never heard Sea Change, and Odely was choosen so I went with my next favorite Beck record.

Official ruling: None of the edited voting posts count. Fandango's votes do not count. Sorry, those were the rules.

Mordred: Do these include the inelgible votes?

With those, I have Damfino winning by two votes.

Mordred

For people who weren't playing the game, they had a few favorites:

Vryce and Ryuryu both got 8 of the 10 non-participant votes.
Monkish, BadlyDrawnBoy, Flynn, maxfisher and Mordred each got 7 votes.

For the most part this voting went with the way the participants voted, with only one exception: Outsiders voted 7-3 for monkish, but he still lost 19-21.

Outsiders also voted 6-4 in favor of A.D.D. for DVD in the race that was tied.

Outsiders were the deciding votes in Lokimok, Vryce and Giles' victories.

If Hiro's vote is removed or stays, Damfino still beats A.D.D., however that will cause a tie between Hollowgen and ChrisKnudsen which is currently 19-20 in favor of Chris.

I didn't count Vryce's votes twice. I got 40 votes, with 2 disqualifications (not counting Fandango's late entry).

I still come up with 19-19 for Hollowgen vs. ChrisKnudsen. The two DQs were both for Knudsen (as was Fandangos). The outsiders were split 50/50 on them as well.

Let them each pick 1 of their albums to be their tiebreaker (ringer) pick, and then open the voting for a half-hour or so and see who gets the most votes. That is better than flipping a coin.

ryuryu2949 ('90), DJLinus ('91), maxfisher ('93)

The "classes" so far are evenly split. Each has lost about half of its players. It looks like the age of the albums so far has not had much of an effect.

WINNERS, BY DEVIATION OF YEAR

This was mostly inconclusive... Still... people who drafted from a group of about a decade did very well. Those who stuck to too strict of a time period (Hollowgen, tripwire) or were all over the place (orange crush, ADD, myself) did not do well. This test seems to give an edge to maxfisher, jimdrix, DJLinus, BadlyDrawnBoy, ryuryu2949, and illenium.

SUPER-HEAVY FAVORITES (by votes in first round)

- ApexTwin ........ 29
- ryuryu2949 ...... 28
- jimdrix ......... 27
- maxfisher ....... 26
- BadlyDrawnBoy ... 25
- cdollaz ......... 25

These players either had a super-strong collection or a weak opponent. Keep a close eye on them.

I'm just kidding of course, it was a well fought battle (actually you slaughtered me). Have fun in the later rounds. I am a little surprised that it seems my choice of the Killers hurt me, at least a couple people explicitly stated so. That was one of my most favorite albums of the last year.
