Need some sad-love song music quick!!

Here is my story:

I broke up with a girlfriend of mine in high school. Recently (5 years later) we have started talking again and there still is a spark there. To sound romantic, I told her after our initial break up, I really wanted her back and was going to make a CD of sad songs saying how much of a fool I was that I broke up with her. Nope, there never was a CD!! Unfortunately, she wants to hear this "CD." So I need to ask you guys to help me with some sad-love songs that the singer says how dumb/sad he/she feels for ending things and taking things for granted.

As of right now, I have:

Careless Heart - Roy Orbison
Nobody Knows - The Tony Rich Project
Hey Jealousy - Gin Blossoms
Rhythm of the Rain - The Cascades.

I need to fill up a CD, so please help!!

Thanks!

Good Year for the Roses by Elvis Costello

Every time I hear that I just about cry - even when I am burstingly happy!

There seems to be a ton of suggestions already, not really depressing ones though. I'll just add one. I went through a break up and couldn't stop listening to:

The Reindeer Section - Your Sweet Voice
from Son of Evil Reindeer

"Your sweet voice,
lets me know there is a choice.
Please me slow,
much more slowly than that.
and when we danced,
we danced one cheek to cold cheek,
a sideways glance,
I knew you were looking at him.

I can't call you a friend,
'cause when you left me here, you left me here to die.
Don't worry I won't call you again,
'cause when I take a hint,
I take it pretty hard,
and when you broke my heart
you broke it into shards of glass.

The telephone
yells out at me to wake,
I won't be blamed
for someone else's mistakes,
it's your sweet voice
sounding cheery on the line,
it breaks my heart,
as I ease up on the charm,

Can I call you my friend?
'cause it's been so long since we talked, and I miss you,
don't worry I'm over you right now,
so my feelings won't get in the way of it,
Oh, and I miss the way we talked about the little things.
"

This sounds like it has the potential to turn into some awful sitcom scenario where she listens to the disc and figures out you made it up because one of the songs is less than 5 years old or the CD-R it's burned to wasn't produced back then. I'd just tell her you lost the cd or, if you want to be really dramatic, that it became too painful of a memory and you burned it, but were embarressed to tell her this earlier. That said, I'll go ahead and contribute a song recommendation:
Queen - One Year of Love

the most devastating sad song ever written:

Bob Dylan's "Standing in the Doorway" from Time Out of Mind

also:

Neil Young's "Philadelphia" from the soundtrack to Philadelphia

those are two of my favorites.
-di doctor-

edited to add lyrics:

Bob Dylan's "Standing in the Doorway"

I'm walking through the summer nights
Jukebox playing low
Yesterday everything was going too fast
Today, it's moving too slow
I got no place left to turn
I got nothing left to burn
Don't know if I saw you, if I would kiss you or kill you
It probably wouldn't matter to you anyhow
You left me standing in the doorway, crying
I got nothing to go back to now

The light in this place is so bad
Making me sick in the head
All the laughter is just making me sad
The stars have turned cherry red
I'm strumming on my gay guitar
Smoking a cheap cigar
The ghost of our old love has not gone away
Don't look like it will anytime soon
You left me standing in the doorway crying
Under the midnight moon

Maybe they'll get me and maybe they won't
But not tonight and it won't be here
There are things I could say but I don't
I know the mercy of God must be near
I've been riding the midnight train
Got ice water in my veins
I would be crazy if I took you back
It would go up against every rule
You left me standing in the doorway, crying
Suffering like a fool

When the last rays of daylight go down
Buddy, you'll roll no more
I can hear the church bells ringing in the yard
I wonder who they're ringing for
I know I can't win
But my heart just won't give in
Last night I danced with a stranger
But she just reminded me you were the one
You left me standing in the doorway crying
In the dark land of the sun

I'll eat when I'm hungry, drink when I'm dry
And live my life on the square
And even if the flesh falls off of my face
I know someone will be there to care
It always means so much
Even the softest touch
I see nothing to be gained by any explanation
There are no words that need to be said
You left me standing in the doorway crying
Blues wrapped around my head

a couple of Ron Sexsmith selections from Other Songs that look at missed opportunities in two different ways.

Strawberry Blonde

She was not the girl next door
But the girl from 'round the corner
It was at the tail end of grade four
When she came to school one morning
And all eyes were upon her as she took her seat
Her name was Amanda with pretty eyes of green
And hair of blonde, strawberry blonde

Springtime and dandelions
And summer 'round the corner
Was at the tail end of age nine
With a million dreams before her
She lived with her mother in an old decrepit house
If there was trouble she kept it to herself
All summer long, the strawberry blonde

And by her face there was no way to tell
It seemed like all was well in her world
But the neighbours said
Her mother had lost her will
To gin and sleeping pills
It was no life for a little girl

Still I see her face framed in blue sky
At the top of a slide coming down
And when the sirens wailed
(her mother had failed to rise)
All the neighbours stood outside
As Amanda just stared at the ground

Time flies and years are piled
I'd forgotten all about her
When I saw her down the aisle
Of a streetcar with her daughter
Then I heard Amanda say as she got up
"C'mon Samantha, girl, this is our stop"
And they were gone
Two strawberry blondes

--------

At Different Times

In the midst of all this welcome change
I can hardly wait
Oh, to welcome all that was estranged
To my life again

I thought I was on my own
At different times
Just a voice on a cold pay phone
At different times

Now I'm taken by these thoughts of how
We found you and I
In the midst of it all, in a northern town
Between the earth and sky

These thoughts of you come around
At different times
We watch as the sun goes down
At different times
At different times

I've been tempted by these open doors
You turned and I was gone
Now I pray that I was spoken for
In my absence, in my song

I thought I was on my own
At different times
Like a stranger in my own home
At different times

At different times

A good portion of the Chris Isaak catalog is about heartbreak (all the slow ones).

And Derek and the Dominoes 'Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs' is an entire album of "love-you/need-you" tunes, including brilliant songs like "Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad", "Have You Ever Loved A Woman", "Bell Bottom Blues" and the legendary guitar riff of the title track.

"Let make the best of the situation
Before I finally go insane
Please don't say we'll never find a way
Or tell me all my love's in vain"

Butch Walker can always provide some sad lyrics. this one always puts a little sadness in me.
Marvelous 3 - Cigarette Lighter Love Song

--------------------------------------
I know you're not asleep
I can feel you moving over there
You've been playing with the seam
In your worn out underwear
My lips are raw as hell
From biting on them just to stay awake
It's not like I'm gonna need them, you won't be around
To see them bleed and break

Chorus:
All that I do, comes back to you
So I'll just think about you 'til there's nothing in my head
All I can do, is try not to screw this up again
And just be friends, I'd rather be dead

I drove out of east Atlanta
With a headache the size of my car
I called to say I was okay
'Cause I know how you are
I'm like a movie without an ending
You know I've got nowhere to go
And it makes me wanna throw up
To see you wanna give up
More than you'll ever know

(Chorus)

Bridge:
Everything's supposed to have a happy ending
But the record keeps skipping and the needle keeps bending
Like the road I'm driving to the bridge that has no end
I wanna take back everything that I've broken
But the bridges behind me are burning and smokin'
I guess this is the end

(Chorus)

--------------------------------------

A lot of his solo stuff would work but it's newer than five years...but hey...good luck on that lying to the girl thing, I hope I helped, even if it's just a little bit.
