Gérard Depardieu ends his film career.

I feel dirty that I know him more so from My Father the Hero than anything else he's ever done.

What films of his should I seek out to watch in your opinion?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20051030/...e_depardieu_dc

PARIS (Reuters) - Actor
Gerard Depardieu is ending his film career, a newspaper quoted the popular Frenchman as saying on Sunday.

"I have nothing to lose. I have made 170 films. I have nothing left to prove. I am not going to hang on like an idiot," Depardieu, one of France's best known actors at home and abroad, was quoted as saying by Le Parisien Dimanche newspaper.

"I'm in the process of stopping filming," said the portly star of films such as "Cyrano de Bergerac," "Green Card" and "Jean de Florette."

Depardieu, 56, made the comments on the set of the upcoming French film "Michou d'Auber." He would also star in an Asterix film to be made next year, the paper said.

I guess that makes Jean Reno the only remaining French actor.

Green Card is a good romantic comedy, and 1492 is a must-see film.

Try any movie directed by Bertrand Blier (Buffet Froid, Putains de Soirée), or if you really want to see Depardieu underneath, try Le Camion directed by Marguerite Duras.

***

And no, Vincent Cassels is the only remaining french actor (Just kidding)

Too bad - his acting lately has been a return to form, what with both 36 Quai des Orfèvres and Changing Times.

And Jean Reno? Hah! He doesn't hold a candle to Daniel Auteuil, who is 10x more popular than Reno in France.

I immediately thought of Auteuil when I started reading some of the posts in this thread. He needs to get more attention in North America.

Loved his performance in Un coeur en hiver.

I've never thought much of Depardieu, but his performance in Maurice Pialet's Under the Sun of Satan is magnificent.

Kill two birds with one stone, and watch Jean de Florette, starring both Depardieu and Auteuil.

That's like remembering De Niro for Analyze This.

What films of his should I seek out to watch in your opinion?
Cyrano de Bergerac (probably his best performance)

But there are countless great performances, a lot of those playing historical characters:

Jean de Florette
Le Colonel Chabert
Le Comte de Monte Cristo (TV mini-series, Edmond Dantes/The Count)
Trop Belle Pour Toi
Sous le Soleil de Satan
Fort Saganne
Camille Claudel (the sculptor auguste Rodin)
Le Dernier Metro
Napoleon (TV mini-series, Joseph Fouché)
Les Misérables (TV mini-series, Jean Valjean)
Balzac (TV mini-series, Honoré de Balzac)
Danton (Danton)
Buffet Froid
Préparez vos Mouchoirs

etc...

Thought he was great in Après vous, but it appears he hasn't done any English-language films. European actors in general don't get a lot of credit here for non-English roles.

The only worthy part of My Father the Hero is Katherine Heigl. x 1000

yup. definitely see "Jean de Florette" if you want to see a Depardieu film......and even though he is not in it, see the sequel "Manon des sources" as well.

Daniel Auteuil is one of my favorite actors. I'll watch almost anything that he is in.

I hear ya !

Still waiting for a DVD re-release of Jean de Florette and Manon of the Spring.

So much great French cinema not being poorly represented on DVD in North America.

Other films with both Daniel Auteuil and Gerard Depardieu:

Le Placard (The Closet)
Jean de Florette
36 Quai des Orfèvres
... can't think of any more.

I caught this on cable last week. Enjoyable enough dramedy, but Daniel Auteuil's acting really grabbed me. He can express more in a single 3 second look than the entire cast of a Michael Bay film can in two hours. I'd like to see more films by him. Glad to see mentioned that he's extremely popular in France.

Guess now isn't the time to invest in that European "craft services" conglomerate...
