well, it says the regular price is $9.98 so it's probably a misprice. and since overstock has horrible customer service, sorry to say it, but it's highly unlikely that they will honor the price when they catch the mistake. overstock.com won't even have this available until nov. 22nd, so they have lots of time to find this error, especially once everyone jumps on the bandwagon. it's says they will charge your credit card once you place the order and speaking from experience, if you will end up needing a refund, it can be a frusturating challenge.
but it's only a $9 risk...if you're lucky and you can get them to honor the price, it will indeed be a great bargain!

A comparable show would be Rahxephon(hopefully you're familiar with this show). I feel that it's a great series, but some find the lead characters to be annoying and whiny. There is also a general feeling that the show has a weak wrapup, but there are alternate endings to the show that you can pick up(End of Evangelion).
EDIT: The deal has now been posted at FW. Here's hoping that nobody orders 500 sets.:fc:

Thanks OP. Definitely worth a shot. In my experience they honor most pricing mistakes (sometimes even after they cancel the order, as with the Dickens set mentioned above). Don't go crazy and order 50 copies, though. I think they cancelled a PSP order on me, but I don't remember the details, and I'm obviously not too concerned (I may have cancelled it myself thinking it would never come through, I really don't remember). The only CS problem I ever had with them was with a mis-represented Hand Maid May box (I did an online chat with customer service before ordering to confirm that it was the complete set, and not just v1 with box. I asked if they were sure. I saved a log of the chat to use in case it was just v1+box. I guess I must have been fairly certain that it wasn't the full set, or I probably wouldn't have logged it. I ordered it anyway. It was just v1 with box. At the time, ADV was offering the complete set for just a few dollars more than what I paid for v1 + box. I contacted Overstock, asked for a return (or exchange, but they wouldn't bite on that), they told me they would send an RMA, which I never received. I didn't really pursue it, so I can't really complain much. I hate it when I see people post things like "Those @%$%#$ sent me the wrong item! I am never dealing with them again!!!". Mistakes happen, you have to give them a chance to make it right, and if you don't follow-up, you share in the blame. In other words, don't take this as a major gripe with Overstock, overall I am very pleased with them, and I will continue to order from them (when they have the best price, that is ;) ). Wow, a parenthetical paragraph, pretty impressive. BTW, I am sure I don't need to state this, but since I mentioned contacting customer service in my parenthetical dissertation, I will mention that it would be a very bad idea to try the same in this instance. It is very clear from the description that this is the complete 7 volume set, and therefore, if they send something else (which I do not expect they will), the original description will be your record of the misrepresentation. Contacting CS before this deal dies of natural causes will only inspire the ire of fellow DVDTalkers (and probably some fatwalletters and ebay-whores, but it still isn't worth the risk).

Excellent catch, thanks!
I was planning on getting the individual disks during the DDD sale, but even with 20% off and free shipping I was expecting to pay $112 for them.
The other odd thing about this, though, is that as far as I have been able to determine, a complete box set of the Platinum Editions have not even been announced. I was hoping one would be so I could save some money on them, but searching around different DVD vendor and Anime sites yielded no information. I thought I would have to order the version of Disk 1 that came with the full box and the other six seperately.
For $9 it's definitely worth taking a chance. Great coincidence for me. ;)

This is one of my favorite series (so, yes, I would recommend it). It's a bit out there, and it is anime (for those who don't really consider themselves fan of the approach), but it is widely acclaimed, and at this price--a total steal.

Hate to chance it....but did anyway.........I do caution all potential takers on this deal that if you're doing it just to resale on ebay, don't do it immediately. Many people lost money.

For those who doesn't know what this show is. It is a pretty damn good anime series that gets your brain a lot of workout. A good place to start getting info about the show is here (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=49). Btw, there is a live-action version of this show involving WETA workshop in the works (or will be soon).

I guess I shouldn't be too surprised, but I really can't believe people would order this w/o even knowing anything about the show. I picked up on this cause I know it's a good show and the price was too good to pass. But just because something is 75-90% off the retail price, doesn't mean I'll buy it. I guess there are many that will. Anyways, it's a pretty good blind buy if you're into this genre at all.

sonofa,er,gun...
Me too.
The subtitle on the product listing still says "7 volume complete box set", so it looks like they just don't know what they're doing.
When I search for products titled 'evangelion' this item still comes up on the list.
I saved both the order receipt and the item page. Brent, definitely let us know what happens with your phone call.
Brent L
10-31-05, 01:06 PM
I'm still on the phone, and after being on hold for a long time someone finally answered. I told them what happened, how the item was even changed, and they said they can't do anything other than wait until it ships, then let me return it, and get a refund that way.
I then raised my voice in a very firm way, saying flat out no. I said what would happen is they would either cancel my order today and give me a full refund, or I would get my money back by either contacting my credit card company or through other legal means. I demanded to speak to a manager or whatever, and they put me through almost instantly.
The guy answered and before he could really say anything, I told him while I was on the phone I could forward the email that proves the item I actually ordered, and that it was indeed changed. After a few seconds, he told me he did see what I originally ordered because he saw the confirmation there also, and he saw how it was changed. He then told me he was going to transfer me to someone who could cancel the order for me, and get me my refund.
I'm now on hold waiting for that to happen.
While many expected this, I did not. I've neve had a problem with Overstock, and they've always honored their price mistakes for me.
Ugh.
Brent L
10-31-05, 01:12 PM
Ok, they finally answered. He told me that he has canceled my order, and a refund has been given, but it will take the typical 2-3 days to show up on my account. Hopefully what he told me is true, but I have no reason to think it isn't.
Good luck to all of you other guys!

I'm curious, but why did you even call in the first place?
Overstock has limited quantities of each item. They even tell you "Only 4 left..." etc. If FatWallet bombed them, they would not continue to sell copies for infinity. Once they sold their limit, they'd stop, even if some d00dz tried to get 30 at a time.
I think any chance of this deal actually happening would be if a lot of people had been billed for it a month previous and they only realized the scope of the mistake when it arrived to start shipping. Making them aware of it by calling them up an turning it into An Issue seems like a good way to kill the deal entirely for everyone. Since people just placed their orders the day before, it lessons the sting from a P.R. standpoint to find out it was cancelled right away, as opposed to having dozens of angry customers needing to change their Christmas shopping plans because Overstock decided to reneg on their pre-orders a month later.
For $8, why not just be patient instead of forcing the issue?

The vendor cancelling the order is one thing, and is understandable for the reasons you give.
But when a customer orders Product A, which is shown in his 'order history' as such, then that product *changes* to Product B [which is not even close to Product A], *that's* an issue.
Regardless of the price of the original Product A, if I order Product A, I expect that order to either be cancelled, or fulfilled as listed. If I order A, I don't want B, especially with no notice given. That's like ordering a hamburger from a restaurant, then the server giving you a salad, at the same price. That's *not* what I ordered, I don't want it, and i don't want to go through any 'return' hassle for *your* 'mistake/fraud attempt'.
Whoops, I *did* post a response to your first post :) Sorry.

I know this was a price mistake that we all jumped on but how can they send us a totally different item than the one we ordered?Maybe those mofos at Overstock purposely picked this series in the hopes of getting people to cancel their orders. I don't even see a listing for Street Fighter coming out on November 22 from any other etailer. Maybe if enough people cancel their orders, they'll fulfill with Evangelion. Yeah, sorry. Brain Fart.
As far as changing the order, it was still worth the $8. If they do ship me Street Fighter instead, worst-case scenario I call up my credit card company/bank and they will refund my money. It is against the law to charge you for an item you did not order, and if you have the confirmation email that's more than enough proof.
Best case, the collective outrage of baited-and-switched customers complaining and/or filing statements with the BBB causes them to make good on it. Cancelling it outright and issuing refunds would be one thing, but billing you for something you had no interest in is another.

This seems to be a mix-up with the UPC number (702727132322). When I googled that number (which I got from DDD's listing of Evangelion), it led me to a lot of sites listing Streetfighter, most of them listing it at $55+.
This one even lists Streetfighter, but pictures Evangelion: http://www.dvds-usa.com/702727132322.htm
As much as I don't trust Overstock, I don't think this was an intentional switch.
dtcarson
10-31-05, 03:12 PM
If so, that's still really weird--is "Street Fighter Volume 1" worth 65+ bucks?
Barnes and Noble lists that UPC as Evangelion. http://video.barnesandnoble.com/search/product.asp?r=1&ean=702727132322
When I put that UPC into the UPC Database http://www.upcdatabase.com/ it comes up as an unknown ADVision release--but I see that ADV has released some SF stuff as well.
When putting that UPC into Half.com's site, I get this:
Neon Genesis Evangelion - Platinum: Complete Collection (DVD, Jan 2005)
Format: DVD, Rating: Not Rated, Color: Color, UPC: 702727132322, Duration: 750 min., Recording Mode: (unknown), Release Month and Year: Jan 2005, Extra Info: 7-Volume Complete Box Set
This is definitely very wacky/sneaky.
Here's some more details I got when googling the UPC 702727132322
http://fma.warcry.com/scripts/news/view_news.phtml?site=76&id=49311
which is definitely NGE not SF.

This stinks and is a pretty sneaky thing to do. That said, I think I will just let the order go through and see what happens. The $7 just isnt worth it to me to have to deal with these people. It will end up costing more after the stress and massive headache. Not to mention the hour long phone call added to that. If it is indeed Streetfighter, I can always use it for a lemonaide coaster.

10-31-05, 03:49 PM
I figure I'll also let this go through and see what happens. No big deal either way. The frustrating thing for me is I can't tell you how many times Overstock has just cancelled a legitimate order of mine for items I really wanted (presumably for stock reasons), and now this time, instead of just cancelling the stupid order, they switch the product on me.
eau
10-31-05, 03:52 PM
I have no clue what the big O is trying to pull. There is no Street Fighter Vol.1 coming out on 11/22, and every Street Fighter like title from ADV has a $30 SRP anyway.
AAA Anime Distribution lists the Neon Genesis Evangelion Platinum Collection (thinpak) (http://www.aaaanime.com/dvds.asp?view=item&code=DNGEBX2) with UPC 702727132322, along with picture of the boxset.
I'm gonna let it slide since I paid for mine with credit anyway. If they try to send me something else, I'm just gonna demand a coupon or credit back.

I agree. It's only $8. If they ship you the real boxset, then you got yourself a great bargain. If they ship you something else, you can return it and they ought to refund shipping cost since it's an incorrect product according to their standard return policy but you have to pay to ship it back, I think. Like most everyone else, my order had changed to "Street Fighter", so I called Overstock as well hoping to stick it to them and get the Neon Genesis set.
However, as soon as I said my piece to the CSR, she mentioned that my order was, in fact, Neon Genesis. Aghast that she wasn't skirting the issue, I refreshed my order status online at their site to find that it was true -- it had reverted back.
It seems as though the title might have changed (to simply "Neon Genesis Evangelion", foregoing the whole box set details title), but the item number is the same (10083223). Funnily enough, they've finally corrected the price and title of the item on their website (http://www.overstock.com/?page=proframe&prod_id=1715303).
So who knows? Maybe they've actually bitten the bullet...

Without a reciept you are s.o.l.
I got a game as a gift, it has a best buy price tag on it, I tried to return it at two different stores for an exchange and was turned away. They told me to take it to wal-mart.
Best buy sucks ass when it comes to customer service. Be sure not to buy anyone a gift at best buy because they will not be able to exchange it without a reciept.
While I'm sure they adopted this policy due to abuse like that mentioned already in this thread, not taking an item that clearly came from your store is just bad pool.

I believe Overstock canceled most or all of the orders for a price mistake on the Charles Dickens set, but still sent the DVD's out without charging people. Dear Valued Customer,
You recently placed an order for Neon Genesis Anime Box Set at $6.63. We regret to inform you that due to a pricing error by the manufacturer we are unable to fulfill your order at the above price. The MSRP of the item is $85.00. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused. Overstock.com has added a $5 in-store credit (per order) to your account due to this error.
We can certainly understand how frustrating this may be and we apologize that we were unable to fulfill your order.
Thank you for your understanding. We value your business.
Sincerely,
Ralph Mondeaux

As cancellation letters go, I think they did pretty well. They admitted it was a pricing error instead of giving us the run-around, apologized and they gave us a free coupon. They should have explicitly spelled out that they were crediting our credit cards for the balance though.

well i'm going to go file a complaint at http://complaint.bbb.org/ i rather get my dvd set than a $5 credit. i know their price error was just an offer but that offer became a contract once they charged my credit card. if they didn't charge my cc than it is still an offer and they have not accept the offer yet but once they charge it they have accepted the offer and they can't just void the contract. i suggest everyone go file a complaint at http://complaint.bbb.org/ too.

I take it you have not read their T&C?
Prices and availability of products on the Site are subject to change without notice. Errors will be corrected when discovered, and we reserve the right to revoke any stated offer and to correct any errors, inaccuracies, or omissions (including after an order has been submitted).
The "contract" that you had with them is based upon their T&C, which you agreed to when placing the order.
Personally, I'm happy we got the $5 GC. They certainly did not need to.

actually, i think its only the $5. i ordered two as well but only got $5 and according to the email (which i did not receive), it says PER ORDER. so unless you made two separate orders (and was willing to pay two shipping charges), i'm thinking you're getting $5.

it is attached to your account. if you place an order, it will show up on the order page after you put an item in your cart. so if you place an order for a friend and ship it to them, you could "give it to a friend" in that way.

it may not have been, back when they offered $10 for registering for overstock auctions, some people tried a free shipping coupon, which then became the first used thing, when you use your $5, your $10 may come back..

Just because a company writes something in their T&C doesn't mean that it supercedes the law. Once they charged my credit card I do believe that they have accepted my offer for their product. This is their fault for charging the day of the order and not the day of shipment. That would give them time to look for price errors and cover their ass in a much more acceptable manner. Hell, they could have done something like this on purpose just to charge us and let interest accrue on the money we paid them. The point is that we ordered, were charged for the product, and not told anything for a few weeks. I'm not sure how legal this is. It if were to happen with a local company, I'm curious to know how the BBB would look at this.

if what pilot says is true, you can call them and ask for the two coupons to be combined so you don't have to make two orders to use it all up.

I ordered two sets and got $16.06 in store credit instead of a refund. I also received the $5 in store credit. The $5 showed up as a coupon when I placed my next order. I was told the $16.06 would show up as a discount on my second order because you can not use two coupons at once. The $16.06 did not show up after my first order, so I had to call them back and they said it would take 24 hours to show up. The representative spoke to her manager and they were "nice enough" to let me use that second coupon today.

I've looked everywhere on Overstock's site and cannot find their 800 number. If someone has it, please post. Thanks!
I had paid with paypal and used a previous credit of 5.13. Mine was cancelled and credited as store credit. However they also gave me a "free" coupon. they are telling me I cant use my "credit" in conjunction with a coupon. I now have 27.82 in credits with them over three different orders being messed up and they are telling me I can only use 1 at a time unless they expire. That is crap, I sent them money , got NO product and now they are stipulating how I can spend my money. I have been on a chat line with a customer service person for 30 minutes and am awaiting a reply as I type this.
So as others have said earlier in th thread...BEWARE having to do a return or get a refund from Overstock.

The terms don't say anything about reserving the right to cancel orders after receiving payment....they only reserve the right to cancel after orders are placed. I believe that's because a disclaimer saying they can take your money, hold it for a while, promise to send you what you ordered and then cancel your order would describe a practice that is probably not legal.
Cloudspear has a point. I don't think it's legal for them to advertise a price, accept orders and charge cards and then not ship. Once they took payment and charged the card it became a legal contract. But I don't care about this set so I will not bother with it.

I emailed about the credit, and here's what I got:
" I have verified your account and the status shows that your credit card account was issued credit of $ 16.06 on 11/09/2005 on invoice. The credit was issued to the credit card ending in the last four digits of xxxx."
It'll take a couple days to populate where I can check it, but that sounds good.
They also suggested:
I have reviewed the website and I found a similar product 'Neon Genesis Evangelion (Paperback)' which might suit your expectations. You can view the same by following the convenient link to our site:
which isn't quite the same thing, but they're trying.

Ditto on the credit on my end as well. I got confirmation of the amount being credited back to me in full a little while ago. Oh how I really wish this went through, but I got my money back in full so I'm content with that. Couldn't give a care about the 4 or was it 5 dollar coupon I got from them for canceling.
At least like others have said they did say it was a price mix up and not try to give me some flimsy excuse. Though I do like how they said it was a the manufacture error and not theirs though. If that were the case wouldn't the miss price be across the board?
I do have to say my only gripe with this whole matter was if they were going to cancel all the orders, why not do it immediately after they changed the price on the site and not a week or so afterwards. Sure just dangle that carrot in front of us dam it :)

Do you think if there were just a few of those mispriced order, Overstock might just honor those orders? I could understand the lost of money in a big number of orders... Anyway, it's a selfish question, after all, this is a bargain forum, people suppose to pass the "bargain" deals.
Now a day, bargains are hard to come by... The best bargains are usually the mispriced items, but *sigh*, even that not being honored.
