"Scariest" games of 05?

I'm thinking the new Resident Evil 4 ps2 will be at the top of the list this Halloween

Maybe Land Of The Dead: Road to Fiddler's Green?

The demo for this game had very poor atmosphere and the enemies were unimpressive as well. I don't see this being a contender unless the final version is much more creepy.

XBox's Doom3 played in the dark with a full blown 5.1 D.D system blaring. The sound alone can be creepy.

I knew this thread was going to popup sometime this week .

Although Resident Evil 4 is the best game to ever come out and it had its share of scary moments, I vote Fatal Frame II or Silent Hill II. Both had a lot of "what the hell??" moments. But Resident Evil remake on Gamecube was pretty scary too.

Hopefully Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth if it (a) is good and (b) comes out at all. It's supposed to be out now, but I have yet to see it anywhere.

RE 4 is a great game, if not one of the best games i've played. however, it isn't really scary. the village at dark is good, in a silent hill kind of way (knowing things are about but what and coming from where?) good atmosphere though throughout the game.

I found it scary in the beginning and a tense experience for most of the rest of the game. Except for the Island. There was absolutely nothing scary about that place.

Isn't F.E.A.R. suppossed to be pretty scary?

The only "scary" games I played this year were:
Doom 3
Suffering 2

Cannot really think of anything else. There seems to be one more, but I cannot think of it.

(Land of the Dead demo was pretty poor also)

Doom 3 came out for XBOX some time ago, but it was this year. The expansion pack was released for XBOX too about a month ago.

I have Doom 3 for the PC and for the first few levels I have played it is pretty scary. I wouldn't count RE4 as that scary, it was a great game IMO, but not that scary, certainly not like the previous games. Still haven't played FEAR.

I have played FEAR, and it is pretty scary to me. Then again, I am the type of person that scares easily, so I don't know how scary it would be for a normal person.

while, not exactly "on par" as the village, i dug the island. game play of course was superb throughout, but in the buildings on the island things were fairly tense. the flickering lights, the labs, and being in such close quarters with whatever nasty lurks behind the corner. the baddies there were more like a bad theatrical Industrial Band and so not as good as the creepy ass villagers. but the landscape itself, i found to be as good as the village just using a different style.

F.E.A.R. is defintely creepy, though not quite up to the level of the Resident Evil series IMO.

I can't believe this slipped my mind, but Killer 7 is a pretty damn scary game when you think about it. The plot and characters, badguys, the Heaven's Smile and their cackling in the distance (even laughing when they die), not to mention all the fates of the characters and why they are represented in the game like they are. The last mission got my hairs standing up on end.

I have FFII for the Xbox but i'll be damned if i can't even get out of the first building you are in. It is very cool and atmospheric and i would probably like it if i didn't just slowly wander through a building trying to find what i'm supposed to before the game will let me go out the door. Maybe someday i'll go give it another spin after retiring it for a while.
