Talk to me about CDs with a 5.1 mix available...

I'm enjoying the hell out of the 5.1 mixes on the new Talking Heads box set. Any other good 5.1 releases out there that are worth picking up?

I've heard that the Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots 5.1 mix is pretty good. Did they ever fix the drop-out problem on the last track? Is it reasonably priced anywhere? The Lip's video collection is full of good 5.1 tracks.

Wasn't there supposed to be a Sigur Ros release in 5.1 ( ()? )?

What would you recommend?

The dropout problem is with the DVD track. If you play the album on it's high resolution (as in higher than regular Dolby & DTS tracks) DVD-AUDIO track, there will be no problem. Talking Heads sound even better in DVD-A mode as well.

Dark Side of the Moon (Hybrid Super Audio CD) and several of the Bob Dylan SACD remasters (most notably Blood on the Tracks) sound incredible in 5.1.

I have that Dylan set. It's a shame that they didn't follow suit with the other half of his catalog.

Unfortunately, I don't have a SACD player. I can only enjoy 5.1 discs that will play in my DVD player.

If you're just looking for discs that will play in your DVD player, check out:

Grateful Dead - American Beauty
Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
Al Green - Greatest Hits

However, if you want to splurge on a universal (DVD-A/SACD) player, I second the Floyd recommendation, as well as:

Allman Brothers - At The Fillmore East
Marvin Gaye - Mindnight Love/Let's Get It On
Isley Brothers - 3 + 3
Earth Wind & Fire - Gratitude

I had planned on doing this eventually but it doesn't seem like the format really took off.

don't hold your breath. The US market isn't to kind to SACD for one reason or the other. Europe and the UK release more SACD titles than the US

Super Furry Animals 'Love Kraft' - SACD UK release - great 5.1 remix.
Depeche Mode - new album hybrid SACD UK release - import on order

Sigur Ros' ( ) - was promised at one point but never materalized - shame really.

SACD is pretty much dead in the water right now. However, smaller labels like the new Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab are releasing new SACDs of popular titles. They just released a mono copy of The Byrds, "Hey Mr. Tambourine Man".

DVD-A is sort of an afterthought on the market right now. It's being put on some DualDiscs but not all of them. The industry really seems behind DualDiscs, so we'll see what is going to happen.

I don't own any 5.1 albums. Will the DVD-A format and DualDiscs play in any dvd player? I have a 6-disc Onkyo. I'd love to hear some albums in 5.1 sound, but I've never really researched anything.

Bumping this again.

I found out my player doesn't support DVD Audio. However, I've read that most releases contain a Dolby Digital surround-sound mix, making them playable on any DVD player. Is this DD surround-sound mix the same as the dvd side of a DualDisc?

Also, what players support DVD-Audio that is priced under $200? I want to start listening to albums in 5.1 so I can get the full effect.

I really like some of the early Elton John albums in 5.1. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Honky Chateau, Madman Across the Water.... Aerosmith also has a smokin' version of Toys in the Attic on SACD. The R.E.M. DVD-Audios are quite good too. Especially Automatic For The People, one of my favorite all time albums anyway. The Lips' Yoshimi is an acquired taste in my book though. Great album but I find the extreme surround a little unnatural & gimmicky. I like it better when the music immerses you instead of drawing attention to speaker placement.

It's too bad neither of these formats are doing much, but understandable. Competing formats, consumer confusion, and no freakin' software does not a successful format make.
