There were rumours flying around of new subtitles being done, at one stage.

No DVD release is for sure until you have it in your hands.

Criterion bought the rights to some new subtitles but that's about it. I'm really tired of waiting for this one but I know that the day I go out and buy the DVD then they will announce the new one.

A remastered Special Edition from better elements (and new subtitling) has been hinted at from several fronts (including Criterion's Technical Director, Lee Kline). Given that Kurosawa releases are a chief money-maker for the company, and that there is significant room for improvement of the initial release, a Special Edition is no doubt being planned.

The question in my mind: should Criterion hold back an SE for this extremely popular film and make it Spine #1 for its (eventual) HD-DVD and/or Blu-Ray line? Depending on the outcome of the format wars, the answer to that question could delay a re-release by another year or more.

For people who are tired of waiting, there's a fantastic Korean limited edition (R0/NTSC). Better picture quality than the Criterion, but it still has the commentary:

There are usually coupons for YesAsia floating around...

And even then it's not 100% for sure at times.

I thought Criterion said that there was a new edition coming out around when they announced their release of Ran. Nothing official just something like a new release in 2006. I may be mistaken though. (or wishful thinking)

when the rumor for ran started, the rumor for seven samurai started. the thread is around here. They made good on Ran, so hopefull seven samurai won't be to far behind.

Again I say. I wish criterion would just box up kurosawa titles and let you save a few bucks when you buy the box. So many titles now, I am way behind.

I have been looking around the Criterion forum is what some people consider strong evidence that there will be a new edition. Such as a reference in an article that Seven Samurai was getting restored using the same technique as The Browning Version.

Here is a link to the Article.

The "rumor" about Seven Samurai being redone by Criterion has been floating around for a couple of years at least. There's some pretty strong evidence that it will (some day) become a reality. But... that day could be a year or two (or more) away.

I'm not a patient person, especially without any sign of a specific release date. I got the Korean edition.

Yesasia is wrong... it is definitely region 0. They must have seen it was a Korean disc and assumed (incorrectly) that it was R3.

I just heard from The Digital Bits that Criterion will re-release this along with a few other Kurosawa title. If it's true, that would be awesome.

Anyone heard any more news? The December 2005 news letter just says "Look out for new editions in 2006" so it could be next week, could be December

The Samurai Criterion boxset did well last Christmas. I smell another Kurosawa updated boxset on the horizon - like, as you said, by the end of the year.

Highly anticipating this.
