Just saw Boyz in the Hood on cable. One of Dough-boy's (Ice Cube) gang was always sucking on a Pacifier. He's a grown man what the heck is up with that?

It was a different time and a very different world. Something like that on the street would have been a sort of call sign. Whatever strikes you as different from the rest.

I believe I heard in the commentary or a special feature that the actor was using a pacifier to help quit smoking and they just added it to part of his character.

actually it was a fad that developed in response to some woman of prominence (don't remember who) labeling all black men as infants. this information was on the laserdisc commentary. not sure if it ever made its way to dvd.
incidentally, that actor was murdered in Riverside by a vietnamese shooter. they were both from the street racer scene chronicled in the fast and the furious, to which singleton directed a sequel.

Ecstasy (MDMA) and Club Drugs
Possessing a baby pacifier, a pacifier made of candy, lollipops, and candy necklaces. Some club drugs cause the users to clench their teeth tightly which causes discomfort. The pacifier eliminates this discomfort.

actually, i worked with an older aged black guy in a treatment center, and when i told him about my (very white) friends doing this to be cool like the movie... he burst out laughing, and told me that pimps used to use pacifiers with the new recruits to teach them how to give, uhem, oral pleasure the right way..... seriously

Actually, I don't think anyone puts drugs in them, but ecstasy users have a tendency to grind their teeth, so they often put crap in their mouths. It probably just feels good to, as that is what ectasy use is described as.
Also, ectasy wasn't around back then and I doubt this instance had anything to do with today's popular drug culture.

ok that's BS... I remember in high school around 91-92, the pacifier was a short lives fad between "the hoods" as they were called. It was used by by guys and girls and it was retarted

Singleton's laserdisc commentary establishes this as an pre-existing fad.

It sounds like we have conflicting commentaries: one says "pre-existing fad" the other says "quit smoking."

I'm sure it had it's place in several niches of society, but didn't a member from TLC used to wear one to?
