I would really like to get this movie but I don't want to sit reading subtitles for 2 hours. Anyone know if they are going to release a version with an English track?

mel gibson has stated that he will never release this with a dub track.
you can read, why not see the movie? Too many good movies in the world to be skipped over just because they are not in english

Jesus did not speak English. There isn't much dialogue anyway. You may as well hear them mispronounce the Latin numbers.

Given that Gibson was thinking about releasing the film sans subtitles, you could turn them off and watch it that way.

Record yourself reading the subtitles the first time you watch the movie, and then play it back with the TV volume turned down or muted every time after that. Voila! Instant English dub track!

Who wants to read while watching a movie? That's far too much work when I want to sit down and relax, ya know? It's like watching The Simpsons or something while at the same time reading a novel or something.

Well, "Passion of the Christ" is not exactly a movie you sit down and relax to. ;)

Yep, not exactly a relaxing movie. And shouldn't this thread be titled "Passion of the English Track"?

If The Passion of the Christ was released with a english audio track, It will definitely not be the same movie Mel Gibson intended to make. The spoken Hebrew language is part of it's authencity, and with a dubbed english track, it will completely destroy the entire original perspective of the film.

I think throwing "Jesus Walks" on the soundtrack nonstop from beginning to end would be the only way to ever get me to watch The Passion again...

A friend of my dad walked out of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon because there was too much reading involved. God, I wish I was kidding.

While I agree that the subtitles detract from a movie, I do wish there were always available Englis dubs. A have a couple of friends w/ bad eyesight that can barely keep up w/ subtitles.
Since one of em is my wife and we watch movies together, it has effectively cut out some movies I would have otherwise watched.

Not to be insensitive, but I don't want artists making compromises to appeal to narrow special interest groups. There may be services for the vision impaired community that offer after-market dubbing or something, but I don't think that studios should be forced to alter a director's vision (no pun intended) in order to cater to all possible viewers.

I agree that having it in English would take away from the quality and authenticity of the movie (not that Jesus' pale skin in the movie didn't already do that, but that's beside the point). There's not much dialogue, anyway. This is one of the problems I had with Schindler's List. As good as SL was, it was primarily in English, which annoyed me slightly.

I never said I thought anyone should be "forced" to do it, nor do I advocate it replacing the original vision.
Throwing a quick English Dub as an extra lang. track (since there are often several tracks on any release), IMO, does not "compromise the artists vision".
Now, only offering a dubbed track, and not having the original subtitled version, would be a compromise.

How is calling it the wrong language a simplification? Those sort of "simplifications" worry me.

Well, in fairness, adding an English track as an option that you never have to turn on doesn't really compromise anyone's vision since it's only an option. But I agree that reading subtitles (unless you can't read) is the better way to watch a non-English movie.

Not to add more salt to the wound, but in terms of "simplifcation", saying Aramaic is a lot simpler than saying Hebrew language. Regardless of the fact that they are both different languages. :D

a girl I work with, who is an idiot (one of the dumbest people I know), saw my devil's backbone dvd and asked to borrow it. I told her it was subtitled, she asked what that meant, i explained so she declined to borrow it. she kepy picking the case up and finally she said she'd try it. She brought it back the next day and said after like 5 minutes she didn't even realize she was reading anymore (which has always been what i tell people). I was shocked, and now she isn't afraid to watch a subtitled movie. My girlfriend won't watch them though, she sleeps when i watch them so they don't bother her. Although, one night when she woke up to ONIBABA at 3:30 AM she was a little freaked out...
