Welcome to round two of the DVDTalk Draft Tournament (2nd Edition)! In this
thread (http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=439069), the players drafted a roster of ten DVDs each. Now, it is up to you, the DVDTalk community, to vote on who has the best collection.
The winner of the game will win a copy of The Fly (Collector's Edition) courtesy of UpcomingDiscs.com (http://www.upcomingdiscs.com).
For round 2, each of the round one winners have been randomly paired up. In order to vote, you need to reply to this post telling me who you think has the best roster. Your vote will not count unless you vote on every pair!
Players in the game are also allowed to vote. Optionally, they are also allowed to post to this thread telling everybody why they think you should vote for their collection.
So, let the voting begin! The polls close exactly 24 hours after the timestamp of this post (not counting weekends). Match-ups will be listed in the first reply to this post.
Good luck to all the participants!

1. Scott27
2. Franchot
3. Cleaver (by far my toughest choice)
4. Sweet Baby James (another toughie)
5. The Ferret
6. Count de Monet
7. kylerayner (Glengarry closes the deal :))
8. Toben
Since the two best collections (jpfisher's, followed by mine) were eliminated in Round 1, my goal going forward is to champion the collection of kylerayner, who bested me in the first round and whose collection is the best of the ones that remain:
1. TylerDurden_73 vs. Scott27 (neither collection impresses me, but I refuse to vote for one that squanders its Criterion picks on The Rock and The Last Temptation of Christ, not to mention that includes Gladiator)
2. Franchot vs. Cathepsin (two great collections, but The Prisoner easily defeats The Honyemooners, and the inclusion of the overrated The Graduate and The Silence of the Lambs hurts Franchot)
3. Cleaver vs. arsmith7 (this one's easy)
4. jfrost vs. Sweet Baby James (a less predictable collection, and even though Undeclared wipes the floor with whatever Rahxephon is (anime?), the inclusion of more interesting classics seals the deal)
5. The Ferret vs. mbs (again, two very good collections--Ikiru and Notorious are excellent picks, although mbs gets ballsy points for including only one Criterion; since I'm not a fan of Almost Famous, Ben-Hur, or Lord of the Rings, and since despite what some have said Bridge on the River Kwai can in fact be considered better than Lawrence of Arabia, I'm giving the edge to mbs)
6. Count de Monet vs. LBCrazyFool (on the strength of Grand Illusion)
7. Mrs.Nesbit vs. kylerayner (easily)
8. Toben vs. Groucho (as much as it pains me to reward the inclusion of Hannibal Lecter films)
Count de Monet

This is going to be even tougher than the last round, which, in the immortal words of Egg Shen, "wasn't easy!" Some really great match-ups here...
1. TylerDurden_73
Scott27's collection has some true gems (especially his top 4), and this was an extremely tough call. Ultimately, I was wowed by Tyler's powerhouse discs of Toy Story Ultimate Toy Box, Gladiator: Extended Edition and Criterion's release of The Last Temptation of Christ. But it really was a 51-49 split for me.
2. Cathespin
This one wasn't so much tough as it was painful. Again, both really great collections. But even though Franchot's top four are hard to beat, I found Cathespin's overall selections to be more intriguing and varied. I mean, from Three Colors to Army of Darkness...from The Manchurian Candidate to Monty Python and the Holy Grail...whew! My head's still spinning!
3. arsmith7
I swore I would vote for Cleaver in this round, to make up for my das Monkey sympathy vote in the last one but now that we're seeing some serious match-ups, I had to get serious with my vote as well. Cleaver's collection is overwhelmingly prestigious but I found arsmith's collection to be a little more unusual and interesting. Cleaver, if you make it to Round 3, I swear I'll vote for you...unless, of course, you're up against yours truly. :)
4. jfrost
jfrost's collection is another one loaded with some big guns, such as Star Wars, Black Hawk Down, Jaws, Dr. Strangelove...etc., etc. And in this case, the firepower is simply too overwhelming. Sweet Baby James has a colorful, lively mix of titles, and I absolutely love that Dawn of the Dead tops his line-up. Based strictly on their lists, I might vote for jfrost as President but I would probably rather hang out at party with Sweet Baby James.
5. The Ferret
Much like the match-up above, this is another clash of power versus cool. And this could well be the toughest one to call. But if stuck on a deserted South Pacific island inhabited by polar bears, spooky French women and mysterious hatches, I would rather have The Ferret's collection to keep me company. But mbs' inclusion of Controversial Classics was a superb choice.
6. Count de Monet
Only because I think LBCrazyFool has a kick-ass collection and I'm going to need all the help I can get!
7. kylerayner
It's tough voting against Chinatown, one of my all-time faves. But Mrs. Nesbit's inclusion of Mallrats X kind of negated whatever conflict I was feeling. Still, a fine line-up of films. But in the ongoing clash of power versus cool, I felt that kyle's ecclectic cool was more interesting than Mrs. Nesbit's power approach...which, when compared some of the other power lists, isn't really all that powerful but, ironically, is certainly more cool. Okay, enough of that.
8. Toben
Groucho has some truly fantastic titles in his collection. I mean, seriously. If it wasn't for the unfortunate stink of Red Dragon, I might have voted for him. But Toben's inclusion of Alien Quadrilogy, Oldboy and Criterion's exceptional Beastie Boys Anthology was pretty devastating. Plus the cheesy fun of Big Trouble in Little China and Legend add some flavor.
Damn. I can't imagine how tough Round 3 is going to be. Good luck everyone!
Since I'm down 4-9 at the moment I figure I better give a little speech...
A vote for arsmith7 is a vote for laughter. Cleaver's collection is one of the best, Citizen Kane, Pulp Fiction, LOTR, all classics. None of them funny. Not even a little. Cleaver's only attempt at comedy is The Simpsons, which is funny at times. But not the classic comedy that can be found in my collection. The Philadelphia Story is, arguably, the best romantic comedy of all time. The Big Lebowski and This Is Spinal Tap provide some of the funniest moments in movie history, STONEHENGE!!! anyone? And for the darker side of comedy, Dead Like Me is subtley hilarious. And then you have Toy Story which is fun for all ages, over and over again.
Not that I don't have drama well represented as well. The Godfather Collection is obvious two of the best movies ever made. And...Godfather 3. City of God is one of the finiest pieces of film in recent movie history. A Clockwork Orange is my personal favorite of Kubrick's films. 8 1/2 is the best that Fellini has ever done.
Cleaver's lack of laughter would make sitting through all 10 of his picks a bore.

From this point on, it seems like everyone's going to have a great collection. You really can't go wrong choosing one for another. But to help myself out, I'll try to explain the thinking behind my picks.
I wanted a collection that encompassed just about everything, at least as close you can get with 10 DVDs. So there are DVDs from 1927 to 2004. There are also DVDs from different categories; animation, silent pictures, westerns, sci-fi and even a musical. All my picks are well made DVDs with plentiful extras. Now some help for the undecided.
1. Walt Disney Treasures: The Complete Goofy has over five and a half hours of the best animated slapstick.
2. The Battle of Algiers has three discs devoted to one of the best war movies ever.
3. Sunrise won one of the two Best Picture Oscars in 1929. One of F.W. Murnau final films before his untimely death.
4. Deadwood Besides being a great show, it maybe one of the last TV shows set in the Old West. A real shame.
5. THX 1138 If George Lucas was still making movies like this, there would be less arguments about the prequels.
6. Sunset Boulevard has the best looking black and white transfer on DVD, and is my personal pick for Billy Wilders best film.
7. Bringing Up Baby The original screwball comedy. All you need to know is it stars Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn and a leopard.
8. Dead & Buried Underappreciated horror gem from the writers of Alien.
9. Hedwig and the Angry Inch is the modern day Rocky Horror Picture Show.
10. Glengarry Glen Ross Jack Lemmon, Al Pacino, Kevin Spacey with David Mamet dialogue. Need I say more?
Voted before reading past the 2nd post to avoid any bias/influence. Now ta go back and read!

I think Cape Feare is the funniest episode of anything ever.
Thanks to Elways patented last second magic, the final score of Super Bowl XXIV is 49ers 55, Broncos 10.
And Monsters Inc is certainly good for a laugh.

1. TylerDurden_73-a little heavy on animation, but I like animation.:)
2. Franchot-a tough call, but I prefer Seventh Seal over Wild Strawberries and I'm not a fan of M*A*S*H.
3. Cleaver-two of the better collections, tough break arsmith(I would take your collection over most of the field).
4. Sweet Baby James-I need to stop the jfrost train with a vote for myself(plus, I want that Fly DVD).:)
5. The Ferret-Notorious is my favorite Hitchcock, combined with some other great picks wins this race.
6. Count de Monet-it came down to Blazing Saddles over Tommy Boy and Spider-Man 2 over X-Men 2.
7. kylerayner-Sunrise and Sunset Boulevard are great picks.
8. Toben-some great cult picks on your list. However, I do really like Groucho's pick of an overlooked film, The American Friend.
There are no weak teams left and all of my picks were very close. Good luck to all.

I was waiting for someone to vote different from me on every matchup, and I think you're the first. Congrats :)
Since I'm down 4-9 at the moment I figure I better give a little speech...
Your collection kicks ass (<b>The Philadelphia Story</b> is one of my favorites too). You just ran into a juggernaut. I don't think I've ever been more entertained by special features for a longer amount of time than with the fascinating EE material, and you got screwed with <b>The Godfather</b>. ;) Besides, I can't vote against 1 monkey, let alone 12.

5. The Ferret vs. mbs
It appears I am down by a few votes (and many of those cited this pick a hard choice), so I think a little campaining is in order. As in the previous round, I will refrain from any negative talk of my opponent's collection (which is a very nice collection, by the way -- and would be hard to bad-mouth :)).
With my collection, an aim was to include diversity. Both diverse in genre (classics, mystery/suspense, war, foreign, horror, action, romantic comedy) and directing style (Gondry, Altman, Lynch, Lean). I also tried to focus on added value and discs that were more than just the movie.
mbs's Collection
1. Lost - Season 1 (TV) - I felt this was a risky pick, but this show is simply amazing. The production value of big-budget movies combined with the length and pacing of television. Watching this DVD set was a great treat and definately maintains re-play value.
2. Controversial Classics (Box) - This set it easily one of my favorite box sets I own. The movies included are: Advise and Consent / The Americanization of Emily / Bad Day at Black Rock / Blackboard Jungle / A Face in the Crowd / Fury / I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang. This set includes many "unique" and groundbreaking films. If you have never seen these films, this set is definately worth checking out (at a very reasonable price).
3. Short Cuts (CC) - My favorite film by one of my top-3 favorite directors. In addition, the DVD set is incredible. Has wonderful extras and includes the Raymond Carver's book of short stories that inspired the movie. I feel this is easily one of the top-3 Criterion releases.
4. Eraserhead - davidlynch.com Edition - This movie is probably not for everyone, but I feel is a wonderful examination of the surreal and dreams. Very re-watchable many times over. Considered by me to be Lynch's masterpiece (probably along with Mulholland Drive and Twin Peaks). The packaging is also terrifically unique and the transfer is flawless.
5. Bridge on the River Kwai - Limited Edition - A classic by David Lean and a great DVD release.
6. Amelie - One of the few romantic comedies that I truly enjoy watching again and again. This movie could make anyone smile.
7. Brotherhood of the Wolf - Collector's Edition - One of the most visually pleasing movies I have ever seen. And a terrific DVD release to boot: packed full of extras.
8. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - Collector's Edition - It seems this movie is a love/hate with many people, but I fall on the former side. Unique directing by Gondry really works in this film.
9. American Psycho - Unrated Killer Collector's Edition - Based on one of the more controversial books of our time. Adds a bit of the horror genre, while maintaining suburb film quality (directing, acting, screenplay are all top-notch). Unlike many horror movies, this also stands alone as a quality film.
10. Heat - Special Edition - A more "pop" selections than many of my previous. Wonderful character study and adds the appropriate action to make this movie a modern-day classic.
Sorry for writing so much, but I could go on-and-on about my selections. Thanks for all who vote/voted (both for and against me). And good luck to "The Ferret" in our on-going match!

1. Scott27 (Easy Call - Slacker is a great pick late and Final Fantasy and Unbreakable are very weak choices)
2. Franchot (VERY easy call - I hate MASH and Python, and love, love, love Casablanca. Also, Indiana Jones Trilogy is a great way to kill about 6 or 7 hours)
3. Cleaver (Moderate call. Arsmith, to quote Jerry Seinfeld, of all of the losers, I think you finish first in THAT group. Cleaver is a tough draw: hard to beat his 1-2-3 combo of the Lord of the Rings Extended Triology, Pulp Fiction, and Citizen Kane.)
4. jfrost (Easy call - True Romance and Usual Suspects are huge favorites of mine. I also have heard good things about that Star Wars movie.)
5. The Ferret (Easy call - As much as I would love to see the collection that beat mine advance far in this tourney, I have to go with the collection that includes Almost Famous, my favorite dvd of all time.)
6. LBCrazyFool (Close call. LB lost serious points with the Tommy Boy and X2 picks. But it is hard to ignore a collection that includes a Hitchcock boxset, Fear and Loathing, and the greatest tv on dvd of all time, Band of Brothers.
7. Mrs.Nesbit (Very easy call. Fight Club, Pink Floyd, LOTR and Mallrats. a very strong collection. Head to head, the only round where kyle wins (or even comes close) is the great pick of Glengary.)
8. Toben vs. Groucho (The only close matchup. Groucho's collection is just so classy, no real weak spots. Toben had some inspired picks, such as Donnie Darko and Akira, but lost serious points with Legend.)
Note: edited pick number 5 on 9/12 at 9:30ish to reflect my true intention to vote for the Ferret. Sorry mbs for the mistake.

Damn Franchot. We don't agree on any of the selections except each other's collections.

Not true. You both seem to like what The Ferret has to offer.:)

Unfortunately, they do. :( I guess it is time to start writing my concession speech. :)

5. mbs (Easy call - As much as I would love to see the collection that beat mine advance far in this tourney, I have to go with the collection that includes Almost Famous, my favorite dvd of all time.) But... you just DID vote for the collection that beat yours and you DIDN'T vote for the one that has Almost Famous!

Well it looks like I'm going to have to start looking for the best price for The Fly. An early congrats to jfrost for the drubbing.:)

Luckily, I will happily accept accidental votes for my collection (even though it won't help). ;)

Good catch Ferret. I guess I shouldn't post drunk anymore, lol. Ok, I made the edit to reflect what I meant. I hope this does not cause too much trouble for the mods. Good luck to both you and mbs.

I was waiting for someone to vote different from me on every matchup, and I think you're the first. Congrats :)
Your rationale on every pairing but 5 & 8 is the exact opposite of mine too!

Thanks, there was a point on page 2 where it had gotten pretty close. Liked all your picks but Dead Like Me and would have voted for you against everyone but like 3 guys this round.

Yeah, we probably shouldn't go see any movies together. :)

Well, looks like I was handily beaten by Toben (and rightfully so).
I wonder, how many voters caught on to the "theme" of my collection?

Good game Groucho. The votes were starting to turn around not long after I voted yesterday :) -- had me worried there ;). Remember to vote for me in Round 3 :)

I sure didn't. I was CERTAIN you were going to draft Bug's Life.

I wonder, how many voters caught on to the "theme" of my collection?
I did -- I'm a little curious as to why you went for the Bella Legosi Dracula rather than Herzog's "Nosferatu, Phantom der Nacht"
Groucho
10-12-05, 11:15 AM
Because I wanted a film with a different title.
Although, to be honest, Herzog's "Nosferatu" is hands down my favorite vampire movie.

I got it. Would have voted for you too had you not faced Jack Burton.

^ Groucho's 6 - 10 are remakes that correspond to 1 - 5 (Seven Samurai --> Magnificent Seven, Yojimbo --> A Fistful of Dollars, etc....)

^ I did not -- AIM is logged on at home, I'm at work. I sent you an email through the board with an address I check at work -- I think it's actually the same one I'm signed up with here, so your best bet is to email me during the day.
