Well...the following extras have just been passed in the UK by the BBFC:
00:02:17:11 THE GAME
00:01:31:08 THE GAME
00:00:57:03 (THE GAME TRAILER - TEST FOOTAGE)
00:29:04:16 (THE GAME - BEHIND THE SCENES)
00:09:27:07 (THE GAME - ON LOCATION)
00:01:09:06 (THE GAME ALTERNATIVE ENDING)
as well as a commentary.
This looks to be most of the extras from the Criterion laserdisc and I'm guessing they've been licensed for this other release. I'm assuming we'll get this here as well.

There's many possible endings Fincher wanted to go. One was that the game never ends at all (which would be fitting for what you said).

Transfer is fine, much much better than the non-anamorphic verison. The eventual North American release will probably be 100% the same as the Taiwan version. This disc was released by Universal with a new transfer. Not 100% but remember this movie was shot with Super 35 and is quite dark which usually means a grainy picture. Unfortunately. I always loved the contrast of his commentaries from the Seven laserdisc and DVD. At the time of the laserdisc version he was prepping The Game and found it interesting to hear his comments looking back a couple of films later. I would've liked to hear his thoughts now, nine years since its release.
Aside from that, commentary on all extra material including the trailers is a great feature!

There's talk that the film may in fact come out 26 January 2007. Considering the things I've heard Fincher wants to do in his film (i.e. creating entire photorealistic CG environments along the lines of what he did for the recent Nine Inch Nails music video "Only") and the fact he is a perfectionist, I can fully believe the film will be in post until then.

The Game was shot with the same silver halide retention process as Seven, which allows for extreme low-light shooting. It shouldn't look that grainy if properly transferred from the correct source elements. Note how much better the re-release of Seven looked in comparison to the original DVD.

All best,
Jonathan
As Jon noted, they are still trying, so don’t give up hope just yet.

From thedigitalbits re: Universal HD-DVD releases for the next few months:
April - The Good Shepherd, Smokin' Aces, The Game, The Jerk, The Hitcher, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Nutty Professor
Now, granted that's not an announcement regarding a standard DVD, but hopefully they'd release the rumored Special Edition around the same time with the same extras [edit]: from the R2 dvd.

The HD version has been announced for a month or so now...no special features.

Whoops! I meant it'd be release the same day with the special features from the R2 disc.

Damnit! I still want a standard DVD SE release of this though :(
Is there a solid release of this in another region that I can pick up?

I will not be picking up this until there is an HD release with the Special Features.

Not really. The transfer on the existing special editions is sub-par and the extras are ported over from the old laserdisc. If you haven't heard the commentary before, pick it up but I'm hoping for a new release some day.

I've seen a review of the HD-DVD version of the Game, and many reviews point to the picture not being the best of HD-Displays..perhaps this film is just shot in a way that'll never gurantee a awesome looking picture compared to alot of others.

Nope, it definitely needs a clean-up and a new transfer.

It looks like it's not going to happen. Oh, well.

Perhaps this will one day be a Criterion Blu-ray. Don't give up, Jonathan Turell!

Well, I suppose with a new Fincher film coming out we can always hope this one gets released... maybe Universal will at least spring for a new transfer with the eventual bd...even if it's still bare-bones.
