Any info on upcoming 'Army of Darkness' re-release?

With the Anchor Bay Bootleg and Boomstick versions currently out-of-print, is there any info on an upcoming re-release of Army of Darkness with the Director's Cut? I realize that with Anchor Bay and the Evil Dead films there hasn't been any limit to the number of re-releases in the past, but I was wondering if I should pick up the R3 release or if anyone had info about an upcoming R1 release with comparable picture quality.

Thanks in advance

Hell, here's hoping for another 'rubber-book' version (ala ED I & II), for a nice trilogy of cool packages for a trilogy of great flix.

I believe that is correct. The only edition I see in stores now is the crappy Universal one. Also, if you go to Anchor Bay's website and do a search on Army of Darkness, nothing comes up. Multiple versions of the the first two films come up though. I hope they reacquire the rights and release a third book, but that seems doubtful as I'm sure Universal has recognized it's selling potential.

Is Anchor Bay the leader when it comes to re-releasing movies?

Sure other studios double dip but not to the extent that AoD and Evil Dead have been.

I just bought the R3 release after putting it off for years, waiting on an R1 release. As a result, I'm sure that the R1 Director's Cut will be announced shortly. :P

DVDude I love the Ebert quote.

Anyway, Universal should just release an SE with theatrical and DC (with GOOD a/v goddammit) and just be done with this f!*ker. I'm so tired of this I think I'll never buy it just to protest. But they are as unreliable as always. Would they have to do new special features, as presumably AB has the rights to those?

Thanks to everyone for their info. After seeing that AB lost the rights, I grabbed a copy of the R3 disc on ebay for $21 shipped, and I hold it in my hands today - the video blows away the AB disc, and the film is finally subtitled.

Ack. I bought mine just a couple of weeks ago when it was in stock at CDWOW. Using the $2 off link, it was...$13.95 shipped.

You placed the following order:

DVD Region 3 Army of Darkness $13.95
DVD Region 3 Kung Fu Hustle: 2 Disc Special Edition (5.1/ DTS) $14.95
DVD Region 2 Taken $14.95
TOTAL PAYMENT: $43.85

Thank you!
Egon's Ghost: Thanks. I just wish studios would stop releasing full screen crap. Maybe then we'd all have inexpensive 16:9 TV sets like the UK...

$21 is still not bad for a quality disc, especially an out-of-print-in-the-USA one.

Unfortunately, CDWOW isn't stocking it now and the $2 link isn't valid anymore. Timing is everything...

For the Director's Cut, the R3 version is the best, hands down. See the comparison at DVDBeaver. Best picture quality for the director's cut, including the extra bodice-ripping scene not present on any other version.

n.phelge: This link is spiffy, but not in stock.

Thanks - maybe I'll take the plunge and finally pick up those Russ Meyer discs.
