My father-in-law just bought a receiver and my brother in law hooked it up for him. For some reason the receiver isn't recognizing a digital signal. I've put in DTS DVDs and Dolby Digital DVDs and the receiver doesn't light up the display showing that it's getting that signal. It won't play any audio at all for the DTS.

I asked my brother in law and tried to look myself, and it seems that he hooked up the digital coax out to the digital coax in using regular rca wire. Is this the problem? I read the thread that said that you could get a digital signal with a coat hanger, but this is the only thing I can think is wrong.

I messed with all the settings on the receiver and followed the instructions in the troubleshooting section and everything seems to be set correctly.

Could it be the connection?

Check your DVDp settings. They are probably set to PCM for the digital output instead of Bitstream or Native or DTS. There is probably one setting for DTS and another for Dolby, check both.

Yep, also check the DVD player settings....I'm sure there is a selection for DTS also.

It's a Sony. Not sure the model off the top of my head. I'll check.

I didn't think to check the DVD players settings (duh!).

Most players come set to PCM, esp for the DTS signals. This is changing, but it was to protect people without DTS-capable receivers at first. A nasty noise can come from a receiver/TV that is sent DTS if it can't decode DTS.

Oh, and if your player doesn't decode DTS, it will output nothing from a DTS disc when it's set to PCM. So that probably fits with your experience.

I had the same problem when hooking up my Sony. Sure enough, I didn't have the DTS switched on.
