Depeche Mode's "Playing the Angel" : Brilliant!

DM fans, I finally heard the new album in it's entirety today and I was absolutely blown away. It is absolutely brilliant. The production quality is right up their with "Music for the Masses" and "Violator". They are back with a full on electronic album. This is NOT organic at all like "Exciter". This has enormous melodies, vocals and hooks. And so many potential singles. This could be their best album ever. Look forward to hearing your thoughts too.

1: Where did you hear it?

2: What's the release date? I friggin' love Depeche mode, and while Exciter wasn't the greatest, it was still decent.

Guys, I can't reveal where I heard it. But it has leaked. Check any number of the DM websites. You'll see quite a few fan reviews. I can go into more detail if you like with each song. The album is out in the U.S. on 10/18. 10/17 in the U.K. I promise you though that fans are going to love this album.

All I heard so far was a 30 second sample of precious, and I already like that more then all of Exciter. I bet your going to be right and this will be there best album since violator.

Only a 30 second sample!? Well, go here and see the video. It's awesome too.

Personally, I don't care for DM at all after "Violator". I just started listening to the first cut, "A Pain That I'm Used To" and it's amazing. Simply outstanding and easily the best song I've heard in 14 years from these guys. 2nd cut just started...ooh, yeah. This is more like it.

Not that I dislike their more organic stuff (in fact, Songs of Faith and Devotion is one of my all-time favorite albums), but it's good to hear that they're going back to the electronic well.

Thanks for posting that. All of the mechanical/industrial imagery of the boat reminded me of "People Are People." Wonder if that was intentional.

I wondered that as well. Definitely a nod to their roots. In more ways than one.

Yeah, i wanted to get the LE version, but Warner Canada has apparently cancelled it. Looks like i'll have to import it.

Quick question....does the one with the DVD only come with a SACD?? Can I play a SACD on a regular CD player?

thanks

If there is a foreign version with a DVD, and no concurrent American release with it, it has all the markings of a "special edition" release in six months with said DVD and bonus tracks. Looking forward to hearing the album though, as "Precious" really did sound like a return to form.

Listening to it now. Awesome stuff. Synthesizers rule when in the hands of people who know what to do with them. Rock On, DM!

Makes me happy I coughed up the dough for tickets to their upcoming show. Never seen them before. Should be a blast (got 28th row too, not bad).

Wow. The stereo separation on some of these songs is fantastic.

It is a 'HYBRID' SACD which means it should work in a conventional CD player.

Any details on the DVD's content?

It was a great surprise to hear "Precious" toward the end of the Smallville season opener. I was singing it for a while!

This is definetly going to be on the top 5 of the year for me. Love how dark it is and how everything just works so perfectly; like a previous post stated, the use of the synthesizers are perfect. After hearing this i really want to go see them in concert again, i saw them when i was about 11 right after SoFaD came out.

Very true, was just more or less saying that the disc wouldn't be 'unplayable' of sorts in a standard CD player.

Finally heard the new song on the radio yesterday.

I was awestruck... Amazing is the only word to describe the song.
I can't wait for the CD

Nice. I didn't even know a new Starsailor album was coming. It doesn't look like it's being released in the states yet, so I won't feel too bad about importing that one, but I could have lived happily without knowing that there are import SACDs which aren't available here. Now I'll have to order the Depeche Mode disc, too.
