I just picked up Prince of Persia Sands of Time at Best Buy for $10 after coupon, but before I play it I just wanted to know, is it important to play through the previous games in the series before this one to get the most out of it?

Not at all. I don't even think the Sands of Time's story connects to the old Prince of Persia games.

Besides, the old games had maybe a couple text screens of story then just gaming. They weren't very plot intensive.

indeed. I believe all of the old PoP games stood by themselves, Sands of Time included.

Thanks, guess that means I'll be starting the game now.

I loved Sands of Time. Fighting got a little annoying at times which is why I haven't given Warrior Within much of a chance yet.

Also, Sands of Time comes with some of the previous games after you finish it...

The first PoP (remake) is accessible at the very beginning.

Sands of Time is one of my favorite current gen games, absolutely love the game.

The orginal is unlockable but not at the begining or the end. At least on the PS2 version.
From game faqs
You unlock PoP1 in the chapter "Above the Baths" at 33%. Nowhere else. If you
forget to unlock it when you come past it, you'll have to play through the
first third of the game again to get it. Yes, I know, it sucks. Okay, so how
DO we unlock it then? Well, follow the normal path through the baths, so that
you get the new sword. With it, get back down to Farah, then break the cracked
wall here, and walk down the stairs. Get through the outdoor area. This is all
still part of the normal path. At the end of the outdoor area, you'll arrive in
a room with a switch. Now, PAY ATTENTION! This is the room where you can
unlock Prince of Persia 1! There's a lever you can turn in the center of the
room. Turn it clockwise once, so that it points to the gate. The gate
opens. Now, turn the lever clockwise again. It will point at a blind wall,
and you'll hear the sound of a gate opening. Take out your sword, and smash
the wall the lever is pointing at. The wall will break, and you'll have
unlocked PoP1! You don't have to play it right now, you can access it via the
main menu from now on. You can save your game here too.

The fighting is MUCH more fluid in WW than SoT. I think WW is a better mix of puzzling and fighting, though I got lost a lot more in WW than I did in SoT. I'm only halfway through WW thought...maybe I'll get back to it one of these days.

Anyway, the fighting is definitely better in the sequel, though I had no problems with it in the first game.

Man, I've got to see about getting my copy of SoT back... loaned it to a friend who lives about 3000 miles away. I've been itching to go through it again.

Don't let all the naysayers put you off the game, the fighting isn't all that bad. Sure, some of the fights put you against a seemingly endless stream of enemies, but by that point, you've learned some special moves (one in particular), and should have a good enough feel for the fighting system to blow through them without a problem.

I believe that that's incorrect. Unless it was different for the Xbox version (was it -- can't recall now). For Xbox, you unlocked PoP1 by beating the game once, but you had to do that little trick to unlock PoP2. But then, I don't recall if you could unlock the second one for PS2.

The PS2 version only had PoP1 as an unlockable but you had to find a secret room in order to access it. For the X-Box version, PoP1 was unlocked by simply beating TSOT.
