View Full Version : I Just Tossed My VHS Collection!

In a blind moment of housecleaning fury, I got tired of having a Rubbermaid container taking up valuable real estate in my closet, so in my moment of passion, I got a couple garbage bags, bagged them up and threw that shit in the trash can outside. I felt very free as I carried bags of VHS tapes to the garbage in the rain. I do feel a LITTLE remorse now, all those years it took me to collect those things, (all were recorded off TV, none were pre recorded), all those things that I once thought I could not live without.... gone :bye:

They could have used the tape to tie a raft together and float away from New Orleans. Didn't any of you watch Cast Away? :D

If they were pre-recorded ones, I would have suggested them to give them away to a library, but if they were just blank ones recorded off the telly, then you can't really give them away without blanking them first (which would be pretty pointless).

 for decluttering.

I'm in the process of doing this right now. The studio tapes are going to Half.com, things I recorded and don't want are going to the garbage, and the rare stuff like old WWF PPVs are staying in storage, but I've cut down my VHS by 2/3rds.

You suck. I would have at the least, paid postage to send them to me. Anyone else have stuff off TV let me know.

Then did a kid drive up, pump his fist into the air like Rocky Balboa, and drive off with the VHS tapes?

I need to do something like this with all of mine, too (also in the process of "decluttering"), but all of mine are purchased ones (250+). There are a few that I'll keep until they are appropriately represented on DVD, but for the others, I haven't figured out what to do. The collection is worth a chunk of change, so certainly I can't see throwing them out, but I dread the idea having to try to eBay them (although, I guess doing them as a lot wouldn't be too bad . . . ).

Good inspiration to do something, though.

Even if it isn't, at least it will give you a cozy feel good inside feeling.

Of course, EBay is one option, but given you'll only get 50c-$1 - if they sell - you might find that it costs you more than you make (including the listing fee on the ones that don't sell).

While that's true for many (possibly most) titles, there are still lots of VHS tapes selling for decent money.

I've sold about 30 just in September, including:

Piranha - $5.00
The Uninvted - $18.75
Too Many Girls - $9.95
Three Little Words - $7.00
Smilin' Through - $7.50
Demon Seed - $4.75
Genevieve - $10.32
Black Orpheus - $5.24
Accattone - $9.75
Best Foot Forward - $9.75
Dancing Lady - $5.50
That's Dancing - $10.51
Gay Divorcee - $6.00
A New Leaf - $11.75

It pays for the DVDs .....

I recently had a similar moment of satisfaction followed by slight remorse when I chucked a hefty bag full of 5.25" floppies. Ultimately, I realized I had done the right thing.

I'm also in the process of cleaning out my vhs, prerecorded or from the tv. Most of them are being given to family or friends that still use vhs. Actually, all of them are. I don't think I'm going to have to throw any of them away.

i would use half.com as opposed to ebay....list them as singles for cheap, that way you can mail them as they sale, and get an idea what they are selling for....cheap as .75, as much as 20 bucks plus...

i got rid of a few tapes like this a few weeks back.

Just think, in 20 years, these will be collector's items and will sell for 10-100 times their current selling price. :)

True - some stuff just hasn't made its way onto DVD, and thus will keep their value (at least for a while). I've toyed with buying Lipstick on Your Collar, but am holding out hoping there will be a DVD release soon.

But for the most part, unless they are OOP, your old VHS wouldn't fetch that much (which is what I was thinking, but didn't state).

Gay Divorcee - $6.00

I am really surprised that this one hasn't been released yet. Would have thought this was in the public domain (maybe it's not) and thus would have been taken up by one of the "bargain release classics" that get released.

If it isn't, then surely the company that owns the rights would have a decent money maker on their hands.

I woke up this morning feeling great... I feel a little sad now, I wish the garbage pickup was sooner, it almost brings a tear to my eye thinking of all that sitting out there in a garbage can.

I'm coming to grips with not only that situation with VHS tapes, but all my old vinyl record albums. I've got plastic milk crates full of those. On my most recent HT setup, I didn't even bother to hook up either my VCR or my turntable. Actually I hardly ever even listen to CD's anymore.
I might end up bringing the albums to one of those vinyl revival music stores that maybe will give me a dime a piece for them.

They used to be worth a nickel -wink-

feel free to mail me those records...

Well that's part of the problem. You know how much a big box of records would weigh? It would cost more then they were worth just to mail them.

Kudos. Unless, of course, "VHS Collection" is code for salad or something...

Welcome to 1999. ;) I sold off my entire collection of prerecorded stuff in the early days of DVD so I still got around $5-$7 per tape. And with all the deals on here my average cost per DVD was around $6.40. Worked out pretty good for upgrading the collection.

I had every episode of seinfeld on tape, I held on to those longer, but they never got watched. Tossed them before the last move.

At least vinyl isn't really considered a "dead" format like VHS is becoming. Some audiophiles still prefer them to CDs. I would check out what they are getting on ebay first. Of course, many will probably be near worthless, but some might bring money. In recent years, I've sold some of my old albums for $10-40.00 each (nothing common of course, mostly non mainstream metal albums). Old prerecorded audio cassettes on the otherhand, completely worthless. Too bad, I still have tons of those. :(

I just threw out a big garbage bag full of old VHS tapes last week. Still have a few hundred left though. One day I have to find the time to transfer all of them to DVD-R, then I can finally ditch them all.

I just sold my collection of Beatles Albums on Ebay this week. I hated to do it, but I needed to make a credit card payment and I didn't have any money. I also haven't had a turntable for about five years. I got over $300. A few of the albums have been valued at well above that, but I needed the money now. I feel bad for selling them, as I began collecting them in the early 1960s.
