Our dog needs correction. We use to have a bark collar, but the dog quickly learned that the shocks only come whent he collar is on. Do they make one with a remote control, so that you can correct the dog when you want? This would have more uses than just barking, like when the dog chases cats, deer, etc.

I think they do, for training. Be sure to set it to stun.

I thought seriously about it, but we are dealing with 40 acres. I have a cyclone fence in the back yard, but she gets out. May do something just to prevent her from getting out of about .5 acres, but we have a creek in the back, and she likes to play in it.

Works on horse I know, I'm sure it's effective on dogs as well

My neighbor just put in an invisible fence for his Boxer and he said the first time she got shocked she didn't come out of the garage for 3 days... Seems to work great because that dog was always coming over to my yard and now I never see it very far from his house, even though he put in extra wire covering a good portion of his nearly three acres.

Side note a friend had a yappy Sheltie and he bought a colar with a remote to shock it when ever it barked.. It had two buttons. bottom one was low, top was medium and both buttons was high. He never used anything but low on his dog but he always wanted to try the medium just to see how it reacted, but he was too much of a softy to use it on that damn yapper. One day we are outside smoking cigs and he goes in to answer the phone and leaves the remote outside. Dog starts yapping, I pick up the remote and proceed to give the dog both buttons at once..... The dog jumped straight up and did a backflip landing perfectly on all fours, I would have felt really bad if I wasn't trying so hard not to piss in my pants laughing so hard.

One thing to be careful of, I hear that those collars will not work if they get wet, so if your dog plays in a stream, it might short out and not work.

This is exactly why negative reinforcement very rarely works consistently, if at all. Dogs learn much better when you praise them for doing what you want, rather than punishing them for doing what you don't want.

Not to get into a philosophical discussion about behavior modification....you are partially right. Negative reinforcement (depending on environment, variables, desired behavior) produces weaker long term results than positive reinforcement coupled with negative reinforcement. A major component of behavior modification is to model good behavior and utilize positive reinforcement, and not just punishing bad behavior.

That's where the "training" part comes in. ;)
