Here's a few random suggestions not mentioned yet (both artists and songs/albums):
Lush: "Ladykillers", "Undertow"
Alanis Morrisette: Jagged Little Pill (you can't tell me you don't have this?)
Republica: "Ready to Go"
The Go-Gos: "Our Lips are Sealed", "We Got the Beat", "Vacation" (I think the first song will sound familiar)
Evanescence: Fallen
Concrete Blonde: Bloodletting, Mexican Moon
Heather Nova: Siren
Amanda Ghost: Ghost Stories
Hole
There are tons of others, especially if you go off into "Lilith Fair"-style folk-rockers, or 80s pop, classic rock, punk. There's lots of good suggestions here -- give some of these a shot and you might like something. Who knows, some of them may even be better than Hilary Duff?

Track down a singer called Marisa Monte and find her version of Pale Blue Eyes. It's catchy in a good way

I'd suggest you pick up the best of collections of both Tori Amos and also the Cranberries, two of my favorite artists. I'm also a big fan of Chantal Kreviazuk and Natalie Imbruglia. You'll recognize Chantal's musical style since she wrote half of Avril's new album.

You might want to listen to the Go-Gos, you have a cover of one of their songs. Have you heard the original?

Of course, Breeders (esp "Last Splash") and Belly (Star). I like Tonya Donnely's solo stuff too. I knew I forgot something obvious. If nothing else, this list is giving me suggestions for artists to try.
Has anyone else heard of Grey Eye Glances? I think they fit the bill (especially Eventide and A Little Voodoo) -- really great pop/rock/folk/alt music, and definitely underappreciated (they've been self-publishing for several years after getting booted from a major label).
It's not my thing (and I don't have the CD) but I have a feeling the OP would like Kelly Clarkson (Breakaway) if he/she doesn't already have it.

Velocity Girl could slip in there very easy.Velocity Girl fits everywhere very easily. What a phenomenal band...
Anyway, for a while there, I wasn't listening to anything but female-fronted bands, so here are some of my suggestions (the links go to WMA samples from Amazon or mp3s from the band's official site):

I could list a whole lot more by many of these bands, but...that's enough of a starting point, I guess. I'd recommend anything and everything by that dog. ("Retreat from the Sun" is one of my favorite albums of all time), Tuscadero, The Rondelles, and Velocity Girl in particular.

or better yet, their cover of Simon and Garfunkel's "Hazy Shade of Winter".. ;)
i second Tanya Donelly's solo stuff. notably, "Goat Girl" for a quirky little song that would fit well on a light-hearted mix as is being made...
