DVD Talk review of 'Smallville - The Complete Fourth Season'
I read Scott Weinberg's DVD review of Smallville - The Complete Fourth Season at http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=17786 and...
Most reviews I've read peg this as the weakest of the 4 seasons. I'll readily agree that it has some subpar episodes and subplots, but the introduction of Lois, the enlightening of Chloe and the awesome finale made it one of the most satisfying seasons for me (the final shot of Clark harkens to one of my favorite scenes from the movie). It was also great seeing the growing darkness in Lex and catching glimpses of his eventual villainhood. A great season for those who enjoy the Superman mythos aspect, because you can really see the threads tightening, pulling the series toward the central mythos. Nevermind that nonsense about reincarnated witches and Oedipal boyfriends (I liked Jensen Ackles in "Dark Angel", but I could have done without him here).

Come on Scott you claim to be a fan of the show yet you can't even get the lyrics to the opening song right! . I will agree, that season 4 on a whole is the weakest of the four seasons of Smallville. When watching the show week-by-week on the WB I had a hard time figuring out what was going on with Lionel, the stones, the witch, etc... I think that Christopher Reeve's unfortunate passing during this season caused some re-writing during the season from what originally was going to happen with the stones, etc... "Ageless" was by far the worst episode of Smallville I've ever seen. In fact, it is the first episode I have actually disliked (
). However, there were also some brilliant episodes. "Crusade," "Run," "Onyx," "Transference," and "Commencement" are some of my very favorite Smallville episodes, there are also many more enjoyable episodes throughout the season.

I agree the season was too hard to follow and this is from someone who never watched it one the air but watched the whole DVD set in 3 nights. It was a very weak season but it was still enjoyable.
I was upset that they FX budget seemed to be very slim for most of the season. Every other season had some great super powder moments but this season it was kinda thin on those.
I agree that Ageless was crap but Spirit was the episode that I just hated with a passion. The opening of the show was just dumb and pointless since we quickly learn what is going on. I thought the premise of the show was good but it was executed very poorly.
These sets always feel a bit thin on extras but I guess overall there are more than most season sets have. I also wish they would of never started with having the opening theme on the main menu. While I enjoy the theme, I put it on my phone a month before each season set is released, I always forget how loud the theme is when I click to go back to the main menu and it never fails that I am scrambling for the remote.

I actually liked this season better than Season 3 even though it's probably not technically better. It just seemed to be a little more entertaining. The addition of Lois (I know she has no place in Smallville) was fun. I liked the character. The episode with the witches was pretty hot. The finale was interesting. Some decent episodes and some not so decent ones throughout.
