Welcome to round three of the DVDTalk Draft Tournament! In this thread (http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=435495), the players drafted a roster of ten DVDs each. Now, it is up to you, the DVDTalk community, to vote on who has the best collection.
We are now in round 3 of this single-elimination tournament. In order to vote, you need to reply to this post telling me who you think has the best roster. Your vote will not count unless you vote on every pair!
Players in the game are also allowed to vote. Optionally, they are also allowed to post to this thread telling everybody why they think you should vote for their collection.
So, let the voting begin! The polls closes on Monday, exactly 24 at the timestamp of this post. Match-ups will be listed in the first reply to this post.
Good luck to all the participants, and congrats for making this far!

1. Toughest matchup so far. I like or love every movie on both lists except Panic Room. jfrost is diverse across genres, Franchot is diverse across eras. God damn this is hard. When I started typing I was going to say Franchot, but I just talked myself into jfrost. Raging Bull is the only DVD that I watch again and again in Franchott's collection, whereas I find most of jfrost's DVDs very rewatchable.
2. Another toughie. Band of Brothers is so damn strong, but Seinfeld season 4 is no slouch. It's like ryuryu2949 planned these matchups: Unforgiven really helps to neutralize The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, a pick that truly broke my heart. Yakuza Papers sounds sweet as hell, but I confess I'd never heard of it 2 weeks ago. I thought I wouldn't have to do it, but I've got to decide by judging what I like least. While I think Old School is merely above average, I don't view Eraserhead and To Kill a Mockingbird as must have (flame suit on), as opposed to everything else there, so I'm going ryuryu2949.
4. In William Fuld collection I've seen Mulholland Drive, 2001, In the Mood for Love, and Simpsons Season 4. After watching Mulholland Drive, 2001, and In the Mood for Love, I had absolutely no clue what the hell I just watched. Slop101 chose good to great movies and really good to great DVDs.

This Round’s Match-Ups
1. jfrost vs. Franchot
both great collections, but the first one had more titles in it i don't care for than the second one. Woody Allen beats Die Hard for me.
2. ryuryu2949 vs. RyoHazuki
as much as I love Eternal Sunshine, the second group has more solid titles in my opinion.

1. Franchot - This was easier than I thought it would be! jfront has an excellant collection of really fun movies. I like Fellowship, Se7en, Brotherhood and especially Die Hard. Those really stood out, but I like nearly everything else. Still, Franchot has some awesome movies that have stood the test of time. Casablance, Cuckoo's Nest, Treasure, Schindler, North by Northwest. These are more than just "fun" movies, they're classic!
2. RyoHazuki - Again, ryuryu2949 has some fun movies (although I wouldn't put this up against either from the first group). I'm not entirely impressed with RyoHazuki's collection either. But Band of Brothers was the deciding factor (and a little Good, Bad, Ugly). If I had to liquidate all but one item from my collection, Band of Brothers would be the one I held on to.
3. dollfins1 - As I stated last round, dollfins1 has the most solid collection I've seen. There's not one item that I would want to own (if I don't already). Nothing that stands out as awesome, but a very, very solid collection. And yet... Cleaver has an almost equally solid collection. But in the end, I'd take Alien over Godfather, Star Trek TOS over Star Trek Next Gen, and so on.
4. slop101 - Much easier this time. William Fudd has a nice collection there and there's a few that I should really put on my wishlist. But beyond Singin' in the Rain, nothing really stands out. slop101 on the other hand has Brazil (another favorite), Kane, Kwai, Deadwood and Bambi. No contest.

1. Franchot-another tough call. I like both lists equally well, so I let the one pick that I did'nt like in each collection be the deciding factor(Royal Tenenbaums is a bigger turd that The Sound of Music, IMO).
2. RyoHazuki-another equal match-up. I went with RyoHazuki because TGTB&TU is one of my all time favorite movies and the DVD itself is great.
3. dollfins1-this one came down to the TV pick and James T. Kirk will be the only true Captain of the Enterprise for me.
4. slop101-Goodfellas, Dr. Strangelove and Citizen Kane was too much for Fuld's collection to overcome.

Franchot
09-17-05, 02:17 AM
1. Franchot Once again I was forced to vote for myself because of my opponent's strong list (and my trailing in the polls.) The only thing I've never seen on his list is "Taken", so I'll have to check it out. I put "The Sound Of Music" on my list to add a little musical balance. It seems to be backfiring on me. "The Sound Of Music" is not my favorite musical, nor one of my favorite films for that matter, but as far as musicals go, it's pretty damn fine. (I've never understood some people's hate for this film. It's not "Xanadu" or "Lost Horizon" for pity's sake. I think my "Sound Of Music" pick is turning into the Dan Quayle for my team.)
2. For the next match-up, ryuryu2949 had too many films that I consider overrated ("Shawshank", "Usual Suspects", half the "Back To The Future" trilogy (although I own all these films myself). I went with RyoHazuki because he has two heavy hitters I really like amongst many fine films: "Rules Of The Game" and "Schindler's List" (with the latter being on my own team in another version.)
3. Although I'm a super "Godfather" and "Terminator 2" fan, I'm an equal "Rushmore" disliker. (Anywhere "The Godfather I & II" show up would normally get my vote, but there are just too many wonderful films on dollfins1's team to dismiss, (although I think that "Jurassic Park" and "ET" are weak Speilberg films.) How about I make it a tie. No ties? Okay. Forgive me, Godfather, but I'm siding with the dollfins1 family.
4. In the final match-up there are so many I like on both teams, but in the end "Citizen Kane", "Goodfellas", "Dr. Strangelove", and a film by my favorite director, Robert Altman, just can't be beat. slop101

1. Franchot - As in Round 2, Franchot's collection is easily one of my two favorite in this competition. Great mix of great discs.
2. RyoHazuki - Rules of the Game, Eraserhead, Yakuza papers. I like this collection a lot.
3. dollfins1 - Neither of these collections really "do it" for me, but I know I'm in the minority. That said, WSS:SE and Great Escape seal the win for dollfins1.
4. slop101 - This one was VERY, VERY hard for me to pick. Both have very excellent collections, but slop with the minor edge for me.

2. RyoHazuki - lots of bonus points for Eraserhead
3. dollfins1 - this one was tougher. It's hard to vote against The Godfather Trilogy & I love that cleaver lists just Die Hard & not the sequels, but somehow putting the original Star Trek in dollfins1's line-up puts it on top (& I'm not even really a fan of the show)
4. William Fuld - I'd love to call this a tie. Really difficult choice; almost a coin flip.

Ok, time to defend my collection against RyoHazuki.
Ryohazuki has a great collection, but one telling statistic will illustrate why mine is a notch better.
The number of IMDB Top 60 titles in RyoHazuki's collection: 3 (Schindler's List #6, Good Bad Ugly #10, To Kill a Mockingbird #40).
The number of RYURYU2949's in IMDB top 60: 5!!! (Shawshank Redemption, #2; LOTR: TT, #14; The Usual Suspects, #19; Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, #32; Rashomon, #54.).
Amazingly, when you look at the entire IMDB top 200, only the 3 titles mentioned above from RyoHazuki's list make the cut. I get my 5 mentioned above, plus Unfrogiven (#130), The Deer Hunter (#133), Back to the Future (#136).
So again, 8 of my titles in the top 200, only 3 of ryohazuki's.
The question I ask of all of you is this: if you were stuck on a desert island, which collection would you choose?
Undoubtedly, Ryohazuki has many fine films, but I think mine have more "rewatchability," something that is very important. How many times can one watch Eraserhead, Schindler's List, To Kill a Mockingbird, or the Yakuza Papers (what IS that one anyway???). In contrast, I would say Eternal Sunshine, The Usual Suspects, The Shawshank Redemption, and Back to the Future are all movies we keep coming back to watch over and over.
Ryohazuki, this is not meant to say anything bad about your movies--they are excellent. Best of luck to you this round.

These are all good collections. Some tough choices here.
1. Franchot’s Collection - jfrost has Spirited Away and Memento which are fantastic, but the rest of the collection has too many films that I think are over-rated. Gladiator was fun to watch, but I don't think it's a classic for example. Franchot on the other hand consists of films I own and enjoy. The Honeymooners is hard to beat in the TV show category, and the Allen set is really strong. (I think it would help Franchot if he listed the movies in that set for the people too lazy to look them up. They are "Broadway Danny Rose, " "Hannah and Her Sisters," "A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy," "The Purple Rose of Cairo," "Radio Days," & "Zelig")
2. ryuryu2949’s Collection - 2949 has a really strong line up including three films on my personal top 20: Shawshank Redeption, The Usual Suspects, and Rashomon. Ryo has some great films too, but nothing that can beat those three. Also, I haven't seen the Yakuza Papers yet, but I put it on my wish-list based on Ryo's other choices.
3. cleaver’s Collection - This was the hardest match-up for me this time. A lot of the titles were equal in my eyes. ST:TOS 1 vs ST:TNG 4, both excellent, must have sets. Same goes for Alien vs. Godfather. In the end, I thought that dollfins1's ET selection was a little weak. I never really got into that movie. This one was razor close.
4. William Fuld’s Collection - Slop101 was hurt by the fact that I don't like Brazil. (It's probably because I saw it on opening night in a sold out theater of Python fans who were expecting a comedy. People were laughing at things that weren't supposed to be funny and that ruined the experiance. I also think for a lot of it he was preaching to the choir. "A big brother government is bad." Yes, I know... There was more to the film than that, but I digress...) The rest of Slop101's collection is solid, but it can't compete with Mulholland Drive and Stop Making Sense.

As far as what Videophile posted:
Unfortunately, I was unable to list the titles of the box set when I drafted that title. Likewise, I am unable to list the titles of the box set when it goes into contention against another opponent. But thanks for the assist in pointing them out in your post.
For those that missed them, my box set contains:
Broadway Danny Rose
Hannah and Her Sisters
A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy
The Purple Rose of Cairo
Radio Days
Zelig

I think voting is open until 3:19 PM EST, so you've got 4 and a half hours to sweat it out -wink-

Ok, this is really gclose, time to make one last push (Ryo, right now I have you up 27-26).
The choice between my collection and RyoHazuki comes down to one preference: color versus black and white. Yes, that is right, I said it. I certainly respect black and white (I even have one in my collection: Rashomon), but Ryo simply has too much. Eraserhead: black and white. Rules of the Game: black and white. To Kill a Mockingbird: black and white. Band of Brothers: muted tones. Schindler's List: black and white (and pink). I mean, the only dvd he has that has vibrant colors is an animated movie!
A vote for ryuryu2949 is a vote for color!!!

careful there ryuryu - I voted for your collection, but such disrepect toward black and white films could lead me to change my mind. Color or lack thereof has no impact on the quality of a film itself.

Good luck ryuryu2949. You have an excellent collection.

Sarcasm, people! I love B & W films; almost picked Psycho too before someone beat me to it. But it looks like we are back in action after the downtime. Not much time left.......

I think an Anti-Christian Slater platform would have been much more effective but hey, that's why I'm not in politics.

Groucho, any chance the voting can be extended because of the 2+ hour forum downtime???

Preliminary Results
1. jfrost vs. Franchot (tie - 26 each)
2. ryuryu2949 (27 votes) wins over RyoHazuki (24 votes)
3. cleaver (31 votes) wins over dollfins1 (21 votes)
4. slop101 (34 votes) wins over William Fuld (18 votes)
I'm going to do a recount on #1 because it's a tie. I'm going to do a recount on #2 because the results don't total up to 52 as expected, and because the names are similar so I'm sure I screwed something up.
I don't think a recount is necessary for #3 or #4.

Groucho, any chance the voting can be extended because of the 2+ hour forum downtime???Voting had pretty much died anyway. If somebody comes in here clamoring that they missed out because of the downtime I'll hear their case.
4. slop101 (34 votes) wins over William Fuld (18 votes) [from 1st count]
Wow, I really miscounted #1 the first time. I'm going to recount match up #2 one more time...

Can I get some of you to independently count match-up #2? The similar names are making my head spin.

Groucho, I will try this again, but one count had me winning 27-26 (I guess that is impossible) and another had it tied at 26. I will do another count though.

I found a "lost" post. spartanstew quoted somebody else's post and replied "ditto." So I didn't see his votes. Adding those in, I get
ryuryu2949 - 26 votes
RyoHazuki - 27 votes
This looks correct to me. Any objections?
(I won't allowed "quoted" votes in the next round)

Extending the deadline seems a bit ridiculous. Sure it was close but so were previous rounds and this one went on the longest amount of time and had the most amount of votes of any round.

Mhep, I would completely agree with you if not for the significant downtime this board experienced today. I think that makes it different. Rest assured, I agree that a close matcup is not reason alone to extend the time, but a close matchup + almolst 3 hours of downtime toward the end of voting might be.

Nice post, and please note that you were, hands down, my pick for the competition...so I'm a bit disappointed. Hell of a collection, win or lose.

Thanks for your support. :) As was stated by Mhepburn20, this round lasted the longest (over the entire weekend), and I think everyone had more than enough time to get and influence whatever votes they were going to get. No sour grapes here.
