Welcome to round two of the DVDTalk Draft Tournament! In this thread (http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=435495), the players drafted a roster of ten DVDs each. Now, it is up to you, the DVDTalk community, to vote on who has the best collection.
We are now in round 2 of this single-elimination tournament. In order to vote, you need to reply to this post telling me who you think has the best roster. Your vote will not count unless you vote on every pair!
Players in the game are also allowed to vote. Optionally, they are also allowed to post to this thread telling everybody why they think you should vote for their collection.
So, let the voting begin! The polls close exactly 24 hours after the timestamp of this post. Match-ups will be listed in the first reply to this post.
Good luck to all the participants!

1. Drexl - Got to go with Amélie and Moulin Rouge. Other wise Die Hard would have won me over.
2. Franchot's - I was happy to vote for exharrison's collection last time, but as a current Harrison, Franchot has the better selection with Casablanca, Cuckoo's Nest, Treasure, Schindler and North by Northwest.
3. Mhepburn20 - It's a little too Criterion heavy, but Doinel, Notorious, Amadeus and Lawrence are favorites. And I just can't vote for Old School.
4. Joe Molotov’s - The first really rough choice for me. RyoHazuki has Band of Brothers which is probably the prize of my collection. But Joe has Lawrence, Once Upon a Time, Seven Samurai, Matrix and Christmas Story. Even though I have to give up Band of Brothers, there's just more juicy goodness in Joe's.
5. cleaver - Another tough one that just came down to who has more good titles. And I'm out of clever things to say.
6. dollfins1 - Not a stinker in the lot.
7. slop101 - Brazil, Kane, Kwai, Deadwood, Bambi. I'd enjoy spending time with this group.
8. William Fuld - While I love the Three Colors trilogy from obscurelabel’s collection, it just feels a little too pretentious with half the collection being Criterion. Not enough diversity for my tastes. Plus Willy has Singin' in the Rain!
8. William Fuld - While I love the Three Colors trilogy from obscurelabel’s collection, it just feels a little too pretentious with half the collection being Criterion. Not enough diversity for my tastes. Plus Willy has Singin' in the Rain!
obscurelabel's first 5 picks were OOP Criterions, which I thought was a solid strategy. That being said I still can't make up my mind for pair 8, toughest this round IMO.

2. Franchot--(This guy has a wonderful and very timely collection. With the death today of Robert Wise (director of The Sound Of Music ), I think everyone should honor the memory of this great director by voting for Franchot's collection.)

All the lists are very strong. I pretty much voted by finding the one film on each list that didn't just do it for me.

1. jfrost - so strong 7-10
2. exharrison - we seemed to follow the same strategy
3. ryuryu2949 - that Rashomon pick came in handy here to match up with Ikiru; it says "Hey, my collection is diverse, too"
4. RyoHazuki - I love it. It comes down to one preference: The Good, the Bad, & the Ugly vs. Once Upon a Time in the West
5. cleaver
6. dollfins1 - sci-fi heavy, but getting 2 Spielberg flicks is a coup
7. slop101 - Bridge on the River Kwai and Goodfellas decides this one for me, my 2nd favorite war movie and 2nd favorite gangster movie (hint: I took my favorites)
8. obscurelabel - I've only seen a combined 7 of these movies and the Simpsons, but Silence of the Lambs Criterion is just a cool DVD to have

Well I thought about seeking revenge against those who wasn't with me in Round 1, but I'll try to harbor no grudges and be a good sport.:)
1. jfrost-Spirited Away sealed it for jfrost and I must hold Forrest Gump against Drexl.
2. Franchot-I can't support The Abyss and Franchot has one of the strongest collections.
3. Mhepburn20-it is a little too much top heavy with Criterion, but it still wins out(a very tough call).
4. Joe Molotov-another close call. Picking the proper versions of LOA and Apocalypse Now and the inclusion of Twin Peaks won out.
5. cleaver-god damn, these are tough calls. I like your collection slightly better although Rushmore is a little shaky for my tastes.
6. raining_helper-I must support the risk you took in picking a few horror films.
7. darkhawk-anyone that can have a list filled with classics and still put Big Trouble in Little China on it garners my vote.
8. William Fuld-another toughie. 2001 and Clementine won me over.
For those contestants that I did not vote for, you have my sympathy. Almost all of my picks were 51-49. It really could have gone either way. Good luck to all.:)

My strategy, if I have one, is similar to IDrinkMolson's: choose mostly prominent OOP titles. The Criterions are some that are pretty well known, I think, and the ones up to 8. are all OOPs that I have seen with more or less premium asking prices. The quality of the DVD wasn't my main consideration, just its status as a collectable.
To match the rules for the kinds of choices allowed, for my last two choices I picked <strike>whatever I could think of at the time</strike> a great boxed set and a classic TV show.

1 Drexl’s Collection
2 Franchot's Collection - hardest one for me this time...Franchot by a nose.
3 Mhepburn20’s Collection - a close one too...The Adventures of Antoine Doinel tipped it.
4 Joe Molotov’s Collection - Joe by a length...
5 cleaver’s Collection - it was hard voting against Metropolis and The Kids are Alright but T2, Godfather and The Sting won out.
6 dollfins1’s Collection
7 darkhawk’s Collection
8 William Fuld’s Collection - the easiest one for my this time....OOP doesn't mean good. Also, Fudd had Mulholland Drive.

My strategy was to pick dvds I love, from filmmakers I admire.
Before I vote, I want to jot down a few words about my collection.
First and foremost I took into consideration the actual quality of the content - what good is a dvd if the program on it sucks?
So, as most others have, I've picked some of the greatest classics of all time, along with some current and modern-day classics.
But also, what you won't see in my collection is a dvd with weak technical aspects - every dvd has great, worthwhile extras along with top-noch audio and video.
My picks:
1. Drexl vs. jfrost
this one was easy as I like Drexl's movies a lot more, even though I hate hate HATE Forest Gump...
2. Franchot vs. exharrison
Great films in both collections, but Franchot wins because his are the better dvds
3. Mhepburn20 vs.ryuryu2949
another tough one, but Mhephurn just has classier titles.
4. Joe Molotov vs.RyoHazuki
VERY tough call - they both have the same number of stuff I like and stuff I don't
but Ryo's collection is just a little better.
5. cleaver vs.Cameron
Godfather wins it for cleaver.
6. raining_helper vs. dollfins1
both good collections, but dolfins' is the one I'd want to revisit.
7. slop101 vs.darkhawk
duh...
8. obscurelabel vs. William Fuld
both picked some great films, but obscure's choices (though great films) are mostly crappy dvds.
Lord, save me from....

Ok, getting close, so time to defend my collection:
ryuryu2949’s Collection:
1. Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers Extended Edition
2. Back to the Future Trilogy (Boxset)
3. Seinfeld Season 4 (TV)
4. Shawshank Redeption 3-disc Deluxe Edition
5. Unforgiven 2-disc SE
6. The Deer Hunter (Legacy Series)
7. The Usual Suspects SE
8. Rashomon (Criterion Collection)
9. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2-Disc CE)
10. Old School (Unrated, WS)
- From the epic (LOTR: TT EE) to the small-scale (Rashomon), from movies where the camera just allows the brilliant performances to shine (Unforgiven) to movies where the quirky cinematography effectively allows the camera to become one of the performers (Eternal Sunshine); from movies that make you think (The Usual Supsects) to movies where you just turn your brain off and laugh (Old School); from childhood cult favorites (Back to the Future) to undisputed classics (the Deer Hunter); and from movies that give you hope (The Shawshank Redemption) to DVDs that give you the "yada, yada" (Seinfeld), I have strived to create a collection that exhibits a wide range of moods and emotions, while maintaining viewer & critical appeal, and of course, always having substantive special features.
Sure, only one of these movies is a "Criterion Collection" dvd, but under my own "criterion" (and hopefully yours), these DVDs are the ones we keep coming back to.

This Round’s Match-Ups
1. Drexl vs. jfrost
despite how much I hate Forrest Gump, having the decalogue, moulin rouge, and amelie in the same collection makes it very enjoyable over all.
2. Franchot vs. exharrison
hard choice, in both collections there is only one title i don't own myself...
in the end i let the box sets decide, woody allen over bruce lee.
3. Mhepburn20 vs. ryuryu2949
awesome titles, great box set and tv set choices.
4. Joe Molotov vs. RyoHazuki
very equally matched. hard choice. both very solid and nicely diverse, but RHPS, TP, Kubrick, and A Christmas Story tip the scales for me (only stinker imo is The Matrix).
5. cleaver vs. Cameron
neither are particularly strong imo, and as much as i love the godfather trilogy and rushmore, i would never myself want saving private ryan, die hard, or star trek anywhere near my collection.
6. raining_helper vs. dollfins1
both are good, but i own all 10 of the first collection myself. very nice choices with great tv and box set choices.
7. slop101 vs. darkhawk
geez, some of these matchups are just too equally matched. but the first one is very strong without even picking a box set, and deadwood wins out over the thorn birds.
8. obscurelabel vs. William Fuld
i think this is the hardest matchup this time. i would abstain if i could. i own 8 from each group, so i guess it comes down to simpsons over dick van dyke.

I suppose if Ryu defends his I should also jump in this fray:
Mhepburn20’s Collection:
1. The Adventures of Antoine Doinel (Box set)
2. Fanny and Alexander (CC)
3. Beauty and the Beast (CC)
4. Monty Python Megaset Flying Circus (TV)
5. Notorius (CC)
6. Ikuru (CC)
7. Amadeus (2 disc)
8. Looney Tunes Golden Collection
9. Who Framed Roger Rabbit - Vista Series
10. Lawrence of Arabia (LE)
I selected films that elicited strong emotional responses from me regardless of how many times I had viewed them. While selecting I tried to choose from different genres as well as extraordinarily different styles of filmmaking. My collection may contain several criterions but I fail to see how this can be a negative. Hasn't criterion and the films I selected in particular become synonymous with quality? Additionally I have quite a few foreign films on my list and I realize some of these may not be familiar to everyone one. If you haven't seen them I urge you rent anything on my list as they contain what I perceive to be some of the best foreign cinema available in region 1.
I chose Antoine and Fanny & Alexander as much for the movies themselves as how they represented their filmmakers and their contribution to this genre (coming of age movies). I selected Jean Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast out of personal feelings that it is one of the most visually interesting movies and a unique take on what could otherwise be a very tired tale. Monty Python's Flying Circus has always and will always provide hours of amusement for any viewer. Notorious, Ikuru, and Amadeus were selected primarily due to the performance of the lead actors and actresses in each piece as well as being wonderfully representative of their genres and unique films from their directors (Spy thriller, End-of-life drama, and Biopic). After that I ventured into nostalgia territory with the brilliant animation of Looney Tunes in some of their earliest pieces. The next selection, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, is just a fantastic release of a fun, innovative mainstream film and helped in adding comedy to my list. The only genres I felt I was truly lacking in at this juncture were horror and action, I would have loved to select Alien or Aliens at this juncture but both were previously taken so I went towards the action genre with the best character driven action movie of all time: Lawrence of Arabia. Hopefully you have your own great memories with these films that would cause you to choose my collection. If you don't have those memories then at some point in the future I hope you seek them out.

Which one was that from my list? Aside from the entire thing not being your list.
I obviously voted for myself because I need the votes. You're a very strong opponent and I'm honored to be defeated by your list which is excellent. (And by my tally, it looks as though you will be the winner in our race.) Had you been in another match-up against someone else, I would have easily voted for you. If I had to pick a "weak" film from your list, I'd pick maybe "Yi Yi" only because I thought it was going to be a better film than it turned out to be (for me.) Again, it certainly isn't a bad film at all.

I don't quite gork that strategy because I feel that a true lover of film will vote for what they like instead of what they don't.
In my post, I'm suggesting (and, I guess, not suggesting very well), that all of the films in both match-ups are very good and pretty much cancel each other out with their excellence. I was forced to look for the one "weak" film that lessened the entire list. At least, that was my reasoning.

1. jfrost - Tough to pick against a collection with The Decalogue, but I like jfrost's slightly better all-around.
2. Franchot - Might be my favorite of all of the collections.
3. Mhepburn20 - Pretty easy for me to pick: LoA, Antoine Doinel set, Fanny and Alexander box set... nice.
4. RyoHazuki - another tough one. Very hard to vote against Joe Molotov's, but Eraserhead is one of my favorite discs.
5. Cameron - Very diverse mix of very good discs.
6. raining_helper - Wasn't too close for me, but dollfin's WSS:SE and Great Escape are great choices.
7. slop 101 - Maybe my new favorite collection. darkhwak is good, but slop has an amazing set of discs. Short Cuts. mmm... I like.
8. William Fuld - I like many of obscurelabel's picks, but maybe a little too top-heavy on the "gimmicky" discs and OOP CCs. Fuld's is more well-rounded.
By my tally we are quite close. And losing to your list is worthy one to lose to. And "Yi Yi"... what can I say. I knew it was a gamble, but I felt it deserved to be on my list.
Good luck. And if you win this round good luck past that.

I suppose if Ryu defends his I should also jump in this fray:
....
My collection may contain several criterions but I fail to see how this can be a negative. Hasn't criterion and the films I selected in particular become synonymous with quality?
....
I selected Jean Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast out of personal feelings that it is one of the most visually interesting movies and a unique take on what could otherwise be a very tired tale. Monty Python's Flying Circus has always and will always provide hours of amusement for any viewer. Notorious, Ikuru, and Amadeus were selected primarily due to the performance of the lead actors and actresses in each piece as well as being wonderfully representative of their genres and unique films from their directors those .
------
Mhepburn20, I definitely appreciate your collection, but a few responses are in order.
- First, my comment about Criterion was in no way meant to snub what probably is the finest dvd producer on the market (although I think WB is catching up with some of their excellent recent special editions and box sets). My point was that I don't think a DVD should be valued simply because it is a Criterion Collection DVD. In any event, I truly believe that the best criterion collection dvd in either of our collections is one of mine: Rashomon.
- Second, I don't know how you chose "Ikuru" as one of your favorites. You have consistently misspelled this title (it is "Ikiru" by the way). In my mind, that is a major credibility problem for you. Sorry, but I have to call 'em like I see 'em.
- Third, I own "Ikiru" and Rashomon, and while Watanabe gives a terrific performance, I think that Mifune's perfomance in Rashomon is just a notch better.
- Fourth, while I can appreciate the visual stylings of Beauty and the Beast, the sheer innovation of Michel Gondry's work in Eternal Sunshine just blows me away. If anyone has watched the special features on the dvd, you know that the visual effects in this movie were almost entirely done during principal photography, not CGI.
- Fifth, I respect Monty Python, but how can you argue against Seinfeld Season 4??? I mean, this breakout year features The Bubble Boy, the Virgin, the Conest, the "Not that there's anything wrong with that" episode, the Junior Mint, and of course, the running NBC pilot plotline. In my humble opinion, in a single tv season, there has been no more memorable or quotable series ever.
- Sixth, I neglected to note this before, but my boxset (Back to the Future) contains movies not available in any other form in Region 1. If I am not mistaken, the Antoine Doinel boxset contains movies that were previously released (at least one or two).
- Seventh, while I realize that many of the titles on your list are foreign, and thus at a disadvantage when it comes to Academy Award recognition, I would be remiss if I did not point out that we are even when it comes to Best Picture awards (Unforgiven-1992, and The Deer Hunter-1978 vs. Amadeus, 1984, and LoA, 1962). However, two of my movies won what I think is the most significant award: Best Original Screenplay (Usual Suspects and Eternal Sunshine).
- Eighth, finally, and most importantly: The number of Mhepburn20's movies in the IMDB top 60: only 1 (Lawrence of Arabia, #28).
- The number of RYURYU2949's in IMDB top 60: 5!!! (Shawshank Redeption, #2; LOTR: TT, #14; The Usual Suspects, #19; Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, #32; Rashomon, #54.). The IMDB vote does indeed have 8 foreign language movies among the top 60, but none of your selections made the cut.
- Again, Mhepburn20 has a very good collection. However, I feel very strongly that my collection is more well-rounded, and contains more "must have" DVDs than Mhepburn20's collection. If you were on a deserted island, which collection would you rather have?
- Therefore, I urge everyone who has not yet voted to give my collection very serious consideration. Thanks for your patience.

You're right about ikiru and I can't belive I've been misspelling it all this time. Fortunately I am not the only one (DVDTown even misspells it). I apologize. I will not, however, do any negative campaigning. I think you're collection is great and wish you the best.

jeez I got in late, and looks like no time to make up lost ground....cleaver has a good set up...(glad to hear alot of people were on the fringe) but for anyone still in for a vote...i tried to be diverse in my picks...get a little of everything with some mainstays, offbeat, foreign, and some music. No doubt Godfather is a powerhouse, but even if i lose I challenge anyone who is into classic cinema to take time to check out the edison set...It is amazing...i think if more people in the vote would have owned (or rented) this title, it would have made me a shoe in. I know silent film isn't everyones slice of pie, but this is film history at its best, delivered in a great package.

Super diverse collection, especially with regard to era. How is Pete & Pete? I know absolutely nothing about it, so I read the DVDTalk review, and they compared it to Twin Peaks. Intriguing, but how the heck do you film a children's Twin Peaks?

I like Pete & pete. Twin Peaks...maybe...this was one of those shows Nick was pushing the fringe on a little bit. Family friendly, but a bit strange...the charachters are very over the top at points, but are very strong. The show started as one minute and two minutes shorts on nick (used as bumpers between shows) I think this helped the writing...get the essientals of the story, and create a way to show it off visually with something diffrent..worth a rent...I have a history with it, but i think the show is still pretty solid today.

Ok, just a quick defense of Old School. I approached this competition as a sort of "Desert Island disc" list challenge. If I was stuck on a desert island for a long time, what dvd's would I want. After taking mostly serious selections for my first 9 picks, I wanted something lighthearted for my last pick.
I personally find Old School to be hilarious (albeit in the American Pie-type mold), and the real kicker for me was one particular extra on the dvd: the 21-minute spoof of the "Inside the Actor's Studio" program, with Farrell playing host, interviewing Phillips, Vaughn, Wilson and himself. I am huge SNL fan, and particularly a fan of Farell's work on that show. The skit, made especially for the dvd, is very, very funny. So to me, not only was I getting an ejoyable movie, but what I think is one of the best dvd extras ever put on a comedy. If you have only seen the movie, but not this sketch, please check it out.

Well now that I am down two votes I will respond but still refrain from negative campaiging
First, my comment about Criterion was in no way meant to snub what probably is the finest dvd producer on the market (although I think WB is catching up with some of their excellent recent special editions and box sets). My point was that I don't think a DVD should be valued simply because it is a Criterion Collection DVD. In any event, I truly believe that the best criterion collection dvd in either of our collections is one of mine: Rashomon.
Antoine Doinel and Fanny & Alexander are both better collections in my opinion both in terms of scope and special features. Antoine contains all the movies in Francois Truffault's epic, most of which had never been available in region 1 before and contain some of the best essays and doumentaries on the films.
- Second, I don't know how you chose "Ikuru" as one of your favorites. You have consistently misspelled this title (it is "Ikiru" by the way). In my mind, that is a major credibility problem for you. Sorry, but I have to call 'em like I see 'em.
Again, I apologize. Ikiru, Ikiru, Ikiru.
- Third, I own "Ikiru" and Rashomon, and while Watanabe gives a terrific performance, I think that Mifune's perfomance in Rashomon is just a notch better.
That's just a difference of opinion but honestly the transformation Watanabe presents in Ikiru is simply breathtaking.
None of Beauty and the Beast was CGI either, especially since the film is from 1945.
I enjoy seinfeld as much as the next guy but I don't think we'll know the answers to whether or not it is viewed as much as a classic as Monty Python until about 10 years from now. Monty Python contains some extraordinarily memorable and quotable bits, "Dead parrot" "Spam" "Ministry of Silly walks"
- Sixth, I neglected to note this before, but my boxset (Back to the Future) contains movies not available in any other form in Region 1. If I am not mistaken, the Antoine Doinel boxset contains movies that were previously released (at least one or two).
Just one, the 400 blows. And as you are already aware I pointed out in the first thread that the edition presented in the collection is an improvement even including the next short in the "Adventures."
I agree this is the most important. I sort of view our clash as Mainstream versus high brow and nothing proves that more than IMDB's top 60 which includes several films from last year. Also, while some of the films may be listed in a foreign language it does not make them a foreign film: The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly for instance is one of your eight.
Again, if you don't know a movie in my collection, even if you vote for ryu, I urge you one day to rent it and enjoy.

Again, if you don't know a movie in my collection, even if you vote for ryu, I urge you one day to rent it and enjoy.
- I have seen Cocteau's (sp?) Beauty and the Beast, and it is indeed great visually. My comment abotu CGI was not meant all to imply that CGI was used in B & B, but rather to inform posters/voters who might have incorrectly assumed the amazing visuals in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was CGI. No negative implication regarding B & B was intended. But again, wow, to think that Gondry did all that in Eternal Sunshine with camera tricks is truly amazing, whether it came out in 1945, 2004, or 2063.
- I disagree regarding Seinfeld. The fact that it is on in syndication about 4 or 5 times per day and that the dvds still sold incredibly well is a testament to the fact that it is an instant classic of the highest magnitude.
- While most voters probably have seen every movie in my collection, I encourage everyone to take fresh looks at the Deer Hunter (newly restored) and Eternal Sunshine (gives me new things to appreciate, even after 50+ viewings). Also, for those that have not seen Rashomon, don't walk--RUN--to your nearest rental store. It is just that good (and indeed, the inspiration for countless movies, including the Usual Suspects from my own collection).

Same to you!
Funny thing I realized looking at your collection is that you picked a Bunuel film and I forgot to, even though he's my favorite film-maker.

But you picked a few Hitchcocks, who is also one of my faves, and I'm ashamed that I didn't.
