Looks like some pretty good deals - $9.59 for "Man with the Screaming Brain", which isn't even out yet! The best deal appears to be "Susperia", which looks like the 3-disc version for $7.19. Argento's "Opera" is also that price, but I didn't check if it was the 2 disc version or not. (I already have both, so don't come after me for not checking that closely.)

Might have to get a few Hammer titles. Any Bava or Fulci recommendations from the list?

I have a question. Which version of "Night of the Living Dead" is the best?

The best version is the Elite Millenium Edition. The second best version is the Elite Special Edition. The ME has more extras and a 5.1 audio track. From all the reviews I've read, the video quality on both is similar. And the SE has a lot of great extras (just not as many as the ME). So if you don't mind the original mono audio track, and you're looking for a bargain, check out the Elite SE at only $5.99 shipped.

Here's a comparison:

I'll second the vote for the millenium edition. The "new" material for the 30th Anniversary edition (which is the one on sale) really blows.

I'd also recommend the remake done by Tom Savini.

The important thing is to keep FAR away from the 30th Anniversary Edition. Either of the Elite ones would be worthwhile (and if you are a MST3K fan, the colour version with Mike Nelson commentary might be worth a listen)

Thanks for the heads up. Oh man, if I didn't have a lot of these titles, my wallet would be dead, it's just going to be on life support now. That Evil Dead 1 & 2 Books of the Dead for 33.58 is a pretty darn good deal - the picture shows just he DVDs, but these are in fact the "limited edition" Tim Sullivan created "books". I already have just the DVDs for those flicks, but it's tempting at 33.58. Romero's Season of the Witch for under $10 is awesome - it's got his lost film "There's Always Vanilla" included - not a bad special feature.

Did anyone see "Day of the Dead 2"? Is it worth a blind buy or does it completely suck?

I had the same question... so here's what I found on the internet:

From www.creature-corner.com

Day of the Dead 2. It seems that we have been talking about this film FOREVER. Negativity has engulfed this project since it was first announced that it existed. It was not helped by the negative reviews that its showing at the FanTasia Film Festival brought. I don’t think I have read one positive word about this project. Soon you all be able to check it out for yourself as Anchor Bay has announced a release date for the DVD. The folks over at Davis DVD were the first with the news and here is what they had posted:
"While not an official continuation, Anchor Bay's Day of the Dead 2: Contagium nonetheless is being billed as both a prequel and sequel to George Romero's 1985 film. After a Russian Spy plane crashes in the Western United States in 1968, its pilot and the strange vials found nearby are brought to Ravenside Military Hospital in rural Pennsylvania. Soon a strange sickness begins to afflict the patients and the staff. 35 years later, a vial of the chemical is discovered in a psychiatric hospital. Fun ensues. The disc, due on October 18th, will feature a 1.85:1 anamorphic transfer with Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround. Extras will include an audio commentary track (with director/writer Ana Clavell, producer James Glenn Dudelson and DP James M. Legoy) and a making-of featurette. Retail will be $19.98."

From www.twitchfilm.net

12.45pm Day Of the Dead 2: Contagium (Dirs. James Dudelson & Ana Clavell)

I did wander in during Day Of The Dead 2: Contagium though. Curiosity compelled me enough, and it’s the kind of thing you could only enjoy either with an audience like the Fright Festers, or completely drunk with a lot of friends. Coming from the so-bad-its-almost-good school of film making, this is an embarrassment to even be linked in name to a George Romero movie. Err, talking zombies? They not only talk, they chat away and taunt quite happily.. and something that looks like the incredible melting man munches it’s way through a hospital. Terrible scripts, worse than bad acting and a contender for worst fake accent in a movie EVER make this pure popcorn fare. Rent it with friends and laugh it up.

From http://slasherpool.starbase.se/htm/reviews/dayofthedead2.htm

I'll be honest with you, I didn't have very high expectations for this flick, thinking it would be a cheap cash-in on the Dawn Of The Dead remake.
To my surprise I actually found Day Of The Dead 2 pretty good. The budget is much higher than other Taurus Entertainment flicks I've seen, in fact, the
budget for this flick was no less than 9 million dollars so I have to wonder why this didn't go theatrical. It sure does look like a theatrical flick and it sure is entertaining enough.

Day Of The Dead 2 isn't your normal zombie flick. I guess in a way this is kind of a prequel to Romero's cult classic since they actually explain how the infection started in the first place and while it's not a Romero flick, it's still a pretty slick sequel so Romero has got to be pretty happy about this. Just seeing zombies kill people for no reason has kind of grown old now and I guess
that's why I liked the fact that this had more of a plot than normal zombie flicks do.

While the acting might no be brilliant, it's still pretty good. Most of the main characters are pretty likable and easy to root for. That's another twist
that I liked about this flick, this time we actually get to root for the zombies instead of their doomed victims. The directing is pretty average, I would have expected better directing considering the budget actually.

This flick took me by surprise so try to give this movie a shot even though you might not be too psyched about a freestanding sequel to the cult hit.
Try not to think of it as a sequel and you'll probably like it a whole lot better. Clearly Taurus Entertainments best release! Original, entertaining and filled with gore!

does DDD offer any kind of reimbursement for sales? I just ordered two of the fright packs last week for 20.99

It worked for me. I had ordered Day of Dead SE from DDD under a month ago for $14.99, and I e-mailed customer service last night asking for the $3 price adjustment. I had an e-mail when I woke up this morning that they had issued me a $3 credit. Painless.

I guess they figure you can return the product within 30 days, so they'd rather ensure the sale, albeit at a lower price.

And back on topic, definitely picking up Suspiria at that price. Been holding off for a while. And maybe some others as well.

Excluding the Romero and Halloween movies which I am knowledgable about (and Suspiria which I am buying), can someone add some insight on which of the movies offered should definitely be picked up at these prices? Thanks in advance.

These are great prices! Suspiria LE is a steal considering it is 2 DVDs + 1 CD soundtrack + postcards, etc.

I'll bet you there's going to be a lot of people trying to dump brand new copies of Suspiria for $14.99 on E-Bay in a couple weeks. I remember when the Tomorrow People sale was on Overstock. There were *tons* of EBay sellers who were trying to pawn those off unsuccessfully on EBay when Overstock finally sent the DVDs.

Anchor Bay will be releasing an Evil Dead 1 & 2 Double Book Limited Edition Gift Set on November 22nd. I haven't been able to dig up any substantial details on this other than a retail of $69.98. I'm confused about a couple of these:

-I thought that the Suspiria 3-disc was long out of print. Are we sure this isn't just an error on their site? Did anyone here get an email with it saying anything other than backordered?

-Then we have Opera, and it has me worried also. There are two listings for this flick. Both of them have the picture of the Limited Edition. One of them is called just Opera, which is the one for $7.xx, and then there is one that is actually Opera Limited Edition in the title, and that one is $17.00.

It is a mistake on their part, because it's in anamorphic widescreen.

I'm so stupid. I had Suspiria LE in my cart for 4 days, and I didn't order it. Now it's doubled in price from $7.19 to $14.39, 20% off the $17.xx price they normally sell it for.

I also missed out on the Silent Night Deadly Night double feature that was $7.19. Now it's $9.59.

Can anyone tell me if The Locals is any good and perhaps what sort of movie it would be comparable to? I've heard mixed things about it.

Also, I have the U.K. Region 2 Anchor Bay box set of all 3 Evil Dead films with the 4th bonus disc. So, are there any extras on the Book of the Dead versions of Evil Dead 1 or 2 that aren't on that set or the other region 1 releases that would be worth buying them for, or are they pretty much just cool for the special packaging and no other extras? Any info on this would be much appreciated.

There are new extras included on this new Evil Dead 2 Book of the Dead set. Here is what I believe is totally new:

-Sam Raimi's Storyboards
-A Very Dangerous Stunt
-Farewell To Arms
-Evil Ed's Lost Scene

Check out this thread, especially post #109 and on, it has pictures and all kinds of details about it:

I was trying to review other titles and make one more larger purchase after I looked into everything. I'll still probably pick up a couple titles, but Suspiria is out now. I've had both versions of it before already though, so it's no biggie. After reading the dvdtalk review for The Dead Next Door, it looks like that's gonna be a no-brainer blind buy.

Looks like they have two versions of Suspiria, one for $8.99 and the LE for $14.39 - both are out of stock at this moment. Was surprised to find the normal edition has Sound Format: 5.1 EX / 6.1 DTS ES and Screen Format: LBX / 16:9.

A lot of places carry Suspiria for about $1 more, but you need to watch shipping.

How are Cat O'Nine Tails and Dead and Breakfast? I'm a big fan of Argento's giallos like Deep Red, Tenebrae, and The Bird With the Crystal Plummage, but I don't really like his more supernatural stuff like Suspiria and Phenomena.

I haven't seen many reviews for Dead and Breakfast, and the cover art's claim to be America's answer to Shaun of the Dead doesn't really excite me that much.

Cat definitely falls into the Giallo category. I like it better than Deep Red and Tenebrae (I hated Tenebrae), but not as much as 'Bird'. Karl Malden stars, which is one of the few A-list actors Argento worked with, so it's interesting.

Can anyone here help me out on the "Halloween" titles in this sale? I know all about the "H25" version going for ~$15. What's the other one on the first page of the sale (going for $7.19)? My guess is that it's the 1-disk version of the AB special edition that came out a few years back (with the limited edition having an extra disk with the tv version). Does anyone know for sure? Also, if I'm correct then this DVD version should have the "proper" colors -- I've seen screen caps from the H25 version, and it just looks "wrong" to my eyes. Then again, I may just wait for another inevitable rerelease hoping that a version comes out with everything the way I like it :)

09-20-05, 04:39 PM
brainee,

The Halloween title going for $7.19 is the holographic cover 1 disk version that was released simultaneously with a 2 Disc Limited Edition. I used to have the limited edition mainly because it used to be the best version of the film and had the TV version. Honestly though, the extra 12 minutes or so that was added to lengthen the film so it could be played on network television didn't do anything to add to the film, and if anything, it just drags things out a little longer than necessary. The 12 minutes of added footage was shot months after the initial shoot was wrapped and the film was released. Thus, they couldn't really add anything noteworthy, just some added dialogue bits here and there that do nothing to flesh out the story. If you're really curious about the TV version, you can just check it out on TV, and aside from the edited content, all the added scenes are usually shown when it airs on TV. If you have a theatrical cut on DVD, you can usually pick out the added scenes fairly easily. Otherwise, they also sell just the TV version as an Extended Cut of the film for fairly cheap.

The $7.19 1 Disk in DDD in the current sale is the best 1 Disk version of Halloween available, and it has the original coloring of the theatrical cut. The best version of the film hands-down for extras though is the 25th Anniversary Edition for the added featurette, excellent documentary, and audio commentary.

The 25th Anniversary Edition does have slightly different coloring because, if I remember correctly, something happened to the original print that the other releases were made from, so this version was taken from another source. I would assume that any future releases in that case would also vary in color from the original releases. I, personally, don't really notice the color change which isn't quite as bad as the enthusiasts would have you believe. It's not like you can't see anything on screen. Carpenter likes to shoot his films in dark lighting anyway.

ummm, it reveals for the first time that laurie is michael's sister. i would say that is a very significant change between the 2 versions. the original film does not contain this information at all, as it was not decided that this was so until they made the second film (which is when they shot the additional footage for the tv version of the first film). in the original film, michael was just a bad bad boogeyman who liked to scare babysitters.....in the tv version, he is a brother stalking and trying to kill his sister.

stonecountry
09-20-05, 07:57 PM
Oh yeah, I forgot about that. It's been a while since I've seen it. It's just one brief flashback scene though where a young Laurie goes to visit a young Michael while he's in that asylum place. I'm not even sure that they explain that he's her sister, but it certainly does imply some relationship that was not implied in the original cut. Of course, I'm sure that most anyone watching that version already knows the connection between the two. If they don't, you just sort of gave it away anyway. It's sort of common horror knowledge nowadays anyway I guess. That scene would have been detriment to the original release though as a stand alone film.

Thanks! So it sounds like I was right about the first DVD. I've seen the TV version footage and I agree it's no big deal. Though it would be nice to have the extra footage available as an extra for completion sake (either separate or "branched" into the movie as a viewing option, making 1 DVD enough to hold it). I read a bit about the colors of the new DVD -- and I know opinions range from "It looks great, and is the ultimate DVD version of Halloween" to "This is horrible! What idiot 'cleaned' up the colors that resulted in losing the autumnal color scheme (blues and orange) that contributed to the atmosphere". For me, the ideal version of "Halloween" would be the 25th Aniv extras, the transfer of the earlier DVD, with the TV version as a branched extra. Is that asking too much? :)

Anyway, I definitely have my eye on the "Walking Dead" 6-pack. Even though I already have "City of the Living Dead", $16 is well worth it for just "House by the Cemetery" and "Let Sleeping Corpses Lie" alone! I hope they run this sale as long as advertised (10/21).

I don't recall that scene at all. I think you might be misremembering something. Laurie did not know who Michael was... I think she was adopted by another family shortly after Michael was institutionalized.
according to IMDB, these are the scenes added to the extended version:

Additional scenes were shot by director John Carpenter for the 1981 Television Network premiere. These include:

* a meeting between Dr. Loomis and two doctors from the mental (psychiatric) institution where Michael Myers is being kept
* a scene where a nurse leads Dr. Loomis to Michael's room, telling him who was supposed to have been watching the patients. Once they arrive in Michael's room, she tells him he must have broken the window glass with his bare hands. They then glance over on the wall, and see that he has written in blood the word "sister".
* a shot of Michael Myers sitting completely motionless in his cell
* a scene where Lynda visits Laurie Strodes at home and borrows a blouse just as Annie calls trying to borrow the same blouse.

The shot where Michael Myers is sitting still in his cell is included in the dream sequence I'm talking about, but I think they used pieces of that scene in the TV version of Halloween part I and a slightly more extended version of it in Halloween II...since they shot the footage at the same time.

I still disagree with the other poster who said it gave away that Laurie was Michael's sister. It may imply it, but most people who watch the TV version I would venture to say know that already anyway. The added scene(s) would have made the original film less of a mystery if included in the theatrical cut and if there hadn't been so many sequels, half of which follow a completely different story line. I still love the Halloween franchise better than the Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street series.

...and let's not forget the cool Halloween (1-8) Box set that can only be released by Anchor Bay UK...and of course the old British horror coffin sets like the Amicus Collection.

Anchor Bay is still pretty cool though. If not for them and perhaps Blue Underground a lot of long forgotten horror gems would remain anonymous, and a lot of good more recent low budget flicks like Malevolence would probably never get any kind of release.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/tg/detail/offer-listing/-/B0002MGZA0/new/ref=sdp_newd_h_/026-6037552-3346039

I especially like how the Amazon site has that big ol' "LOW PRICE" icon next to the price.

Got my Suspiria LE today too! Of course, Canada Post, or USPS managed to smash one corner of it. Seems to happen a lot with DDD. One of the post offices must not like them.

Fortunately, all 3 discs and all the inserts/extras are fine, so I'll live with the broken case and a small tear in the cover.

Thanks again, OP!

*edit* FWIW, mine is 27209/60000

Good God!!!! That guy's selling it for the U.S. equivalent of about $1800 or so, give or take a hundred bucks depending on the exchange rates at the time. I gave just a little over $50 for mine new from the same site a year ago.

I think it was discontinued because the set was, well, pretty unpopular to put it gently. There aren't any exclusive extras included, it's basicly just a repackage of all of the discs in one collection, and part 3 is cut and is framed wrong. I'd still like to find it someday though, just because I like the idea of a Halloween box set, and I doubt we'll ever be able to have on in R1.

If anyone ever buys that one off of Amazon, they deserve the moron of the year award. Then again, the seller should win the luckiest SOB award at the same time.

I should have listened to you last year. :(

I didn't get any packages from DDD today, so hopefully tomorrow.

is the Supiria LE worth getting now that they have raised the price to 14.39? I hate myself for hesitating on 7 bucks

I considered it a steal when I bought it for 20 bucks 2+ years ago.

The Current releases of Halloween 4 and 5 in the keep cases both with short featurettes and trailers are the best versions of the films, and there aren't any cooler releases on other regions either.

DON'T GET THE TINS!!!! They suck. They're just the exact same movies as the Keep Case versions that are cheaper, only they come in a huge Tin that is out of place amongst most other dvds and looks like a Russell Stover candy tin. The Disc inside is held in a clear CD case with no cover art. The Evil Dead Tins are the same way.

HOWEVER, if you do want to get the Halloween 4 and 5 Tins, I think you can get them both for really cheap now at certain places online...part 5 for VERY cheap if you just type it in the search box at www.dvdpricesearch.com.

also be forewarned that anchor bay is working on divimax treatments for halloween 4 & 5

Upcoming AB horror dates and specs + ED2 and Halloween re-issues, Argento, others (http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=412273&highlight=halloween+divimax)

That's the problem I have with AB. Reissues, reissues, reissues...and they're titles that don't need to be reissued constantly either. Maybe a reissue of Deep Red is in order, but c'mon, there's stuff that needs to be put on dvd, and they'll just say phooey on that and give us a 20th different edition of EDII.

I doubt we'll have H4 and 5 re-releases until late next year anyway, but I tend to agree. They re-issue a lot, but hey...they've gotta pay the bills.

DON'T GET THE TINS!!!! They suck.

As someone who misses the day of big elaborate laserdisc special editions, I love the tins. I've beeen trying to hunt them all down in recent years. I still need Maniac, Let Sleeping Corpses Lie, The Beyond and Two Lane Blacktop.

DVD Planet seems to be running the same sale(they are owned by the same company that owns DDD). If you register with them, they will send you a $3 off of $30 coupon within 24 hours, making the deal even sweeter.:)

Sorry to bump this old thread but I just received my Evil Dead 1 and 2 Book of the Dead Limited Edition ($33) that I ordered from DDD during this sale. I had basically forgotten I ordered it. Another great deal from DDD. And if anybody thought that one of these has a weird smell, you can imagine 2 of these sitting together in one package. Stinky.

Got mine as well... twice the stink is quite overwhelming. I had to send the Evil Dead disc to Anchor Bay for replacement because it was badly scratched and I didn't want to have to send the whole gift set back to DDD. Really good deal otherwise.
