The Hollywood Video in Sellwood had many of their used DVDs marked down to $7.99, and they had a 5 for $20 sale on everything marked $7.99 or less. Lots of medium-new titles including Master and Commander, Before Sunset, The Cooler and others of that era. I don't know if this sale applies at other stores, but it wouldn't hurt to check.

Or you could use the buy 1, get 1 free coupon on visa.com's website (when you use a visa card but most of the time the HV CSRs don't care).

Anything decent? Care to name some of the better titles? (I haven't been to a Hollywood video in years)

Almost anything that has been out for 4+ months can show up at that price level or below. Inventory will depend completely on what a specific store has received for rental, pulled for PVD and not yet sold out of.

Your next statement could be "yes, i read it, but I was wondering what other titles they had?"

Since the titles vary by store, your best bet is to visit the location nearest you or call (but I'm sure they wouldn't be thrilled to list their PVD titles over the phone-but you never know).

In his case, I definitely recommend calling.

Yes, he would appear to be someone who is used to being waited on. It always cracks me up when folks post a question like "what is costco's price on X or does this store carry "y"? And wait for someone to respond to their post, when a 60 second phone call would answer that same question. I always picture a group of hungry baby birds sitting in the nest waiting for mama bird to fly up with the already chewed up and semi-digested worm to feed the hungry babies.

Considering most of you seemed to have gone to the store, I didn't think it would be that hard for you to list what titles you found. I guess it was.

Thanks for the coupon Dabaomb. I called Hollywood video (per someone saying they had problems) and the chick told me that if the coupon comes off of their website - they can honor it. So I was like "cool". They didn't even ask for my HV membership card (the coupon says something about one coupon per account) - so what can they do if someone comes in with 10 coupons in 10 days?

I didn't see any 5 for $20 signs. I did see 3 for $25 and 2 for $10 on $5.99 titles(*)

--------

I got The Sea Inside and The Machinist (both 9.99) as my B1G1 with the coupon.

And I decided to get About Schmidt and Memento (5.99 and 7.99, respectively) as well for 2 for $10. (*)Thing is they had 14.99, 12.99, 7.99, and 5.99 titles mixed in on the 2 for $10 section and I somehow did not notice the $5.99 stipulation. So I asked if the two titles I picked out would be 2 for $10 and she said "yeah". (*)As I was walking out I took a glance back and then saw the $5.99 stipulation. I figured she didn't know how to do her job - so I took that to my advantage.

Here's a few $7.99 titles I saw. Like someone said they have a shitload - so I can't remember them all:

Monster
We Don't Live Here Anymore
Girl With A Pearl Earring
Something's Gotta Give
Also already mentioned:
The Cooler
Before Sunset
um....can't remember anymore.

But I did see Master and Commander and it wasn't $7.99 at my store (12.99, I believe).

My local store only had a sign of 5 for $20 for previously viewed VHS. The DVDs were 3 for $25.

Do their previously viewed discs come in such pristine shape as the BBV previewed discs? I just love a million scratches and fingerprints on my discs.

Thanks for the coupon. I'm going to have to look for the machinist.

A local franchise BBV had a tent sale today. 50% the ticketed price. Which made every movie under $5. People were buying boxes of movies. I walked away with a half dozen for $27. All in great shape. But no machinist, so I will have to check the HWV for that one.

Michael,

The copy of the Machinist that I picked up was traded in by someone (and at my store was the only copy). The sticker down at the bottom left had "USED" in white block letters and had a yellow and red background (and is usually reserved for the traded in dvds). The regular HV titles have the standard purple and white sticker with red block letters.

It's been out for a couple of months (and they already have Million Dollar Baby out) so they should have copies of the Machinist on the PV shelves - I guess it just depends.

I picked up a copy of The Machinist with the coupon but it did have light scratches on it. When I went to the store, all 7 PV'ed copies had scratches (one was even cracked in half). My guess is that it was a heavily rented movie. On the other hand, I got a never rented copy of Be Cool (they must've had tons of those for rent).

My comment wasn't directed soley at yellowjacket....just a general observation about a small minority of members. My point is only for the time it takes to post a question and wait for a response, one could have made the call to find out about an item that falls into the YMMV category. Nothing more, nothing less. hey, my Iowa Hawkeyes just got smoke by their cross state rival...don't expect candy and flowers, I'm in mourning.

Oh, and I also wanted to say all of my four movies were in good to excellent condition. Memento was a trade in title and still had the "security tape" around the opening side and the top of the case (no slits or anything). About Schmidt was the less in shape as the rest, but still only light scratches.

I've purchased at least 75 discs from Blockbuster and Hollywood (mostly BB) and none of them have scratches or fingerprints. Just open it up and look at it before leaving. Mine are all "pristine".

just to let people know, there used to be a hollywood video coupon just like this but for american express card holders.

i used multiple coupons and charged them all to my mastercard and they never asked for my membership info either (which i don't have). i never tried 2 coupons in one visit though.

as for that line about not accepting printed coupons, well you can always remove it before printing, but they seem to ignore that too. do they expect us to bring in our computers and monitors and be like "here is my coupon!"?

I may have to go see what they have at ine. I call that rack the "Pluto Nash section", as it's been loaded with copies of that movie for about two years now. :)

Good to know b/c my HWV is seriously *****ed up. I've rented there maybe once or twice 3 years ago. Everytime I go in to possibly rent something there is late fees on my account for shit I never rented. 3 times the manager has wiped it clean(not believing me in the process). So glad to know I don't have to give them my card since, no doubtedly, there will be some late fees for shit I never rented.

I'm sorry I couldn't remember more of the titles I saw when I first went to the store. There are so many titles I've never heard of before (i.e. probably not your best films) and so many forgettable titles that I promptly forgot. But, digging deep, I'm sure I saw:

Legally Blonde: 2
Grumpier Old Men
Matchstick Men
(At least two or three Denzel Washington titles)
The Station Agent (which I got the last one of)
(And did I mention about 50 copies of The Cooler?)

The rest fades into oblivion.

FYI The Cooler just went down to $6.99 @ Target.
They only had 3 for $25 at my local HV, but I used the coupon mentioned early in the thread and got Million Dollar Baby and Upside of Anger (wife wanted it) for $9.99 total.

If anybody are interested in the Sopranos 5th season and don't care about the box then you could get the 4 discs in individual cases for a total of 19.98 plus tax using the b1g1f coupon twice.

The Wire, Season 2 seems to be hitting the PVD shelves at a lot of HWV's this past week. It's 5 discs, so that is $25 + tax with the B1G1F coupon (and a 6th unrelated $9.99 dvd of your choice). I picked up both The Wire S2 and Sopranos S5 myself.

Based on eyeballing their rental shelves, I expect to see The Shield S3 (4 discs), Rescue Me S1 (3 discs) hit the PVDs soon. People may still also find Kingdom Hospital (4 discs) (particularly at the stores in more rural areas) out for PVD at $7.99 per disc before coupon and Dead Like Me S1 (4 discs) at $9.99 before coupon.

For any anime fans out there, you might still be able to snag a few volumes of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex off the PVD shelves. They're priced at $9.99 a piece, which is a great deal with the coupon. I was able to get 5 of 7 volumes.

I rarely find anything worthwhile in the 4 for $20 bins, but I really like the 3 for $25 racks. I just got Be Cool, House of Flying Daggers, and Alexander. If you go to Hollywood please examine your disks before you leave the store. They are usualy very helpful and they have often let me examine three or more copies until I find one in the condition that I approve of.

Check this out ...

The B1G1F Visa Coupon works just fine. Be sure not to cut off the barcode. They scanned it at my local HV and rang me up no problem.

Traditionally, Matchstick Men and Insomnia were made in snapper cases in the US. At my local HV, they had Insomnia and a Canadian Matchstick Men copy both in regular cases. I was shocked, yet even more so at $8.50 total. :)
