WS TV stand question

I'm in the market for a 60" ws, as well as a corresponding TV stand. Most of the stands I've seen marketed with the TVs are 60" long, which is about the length of the entire TV. But don't I just need a stand long enough to accommodate the BASE of the TV? Assuming it could handle the weight, couldn't I just use a 40" coffee table or something to act as a stand? Or is there a reason I need to have a stand as long as the TV itself?

You just need a stand that fits the base and holds the weight.

Don't forget, when you place the Tv on the stand the middle of the Tv should be at eye-level when you are in your favorite viewing/using spot. Some of the newer technologies don't look real great if you are quite a bit above or below their central horiz axis.

I can just see it now. You bend down right next to the little TV table to pick something up. Stand up, hit your head on the underside of the TV, and knock it off the table. Other than that scenario, no reason to have a table wider than the base.

Should mention, a 60" screen is just over 52" wide, plus whatever cabinet/speakers are on the sides.
