I don't know about ogm and mkv, but my Philips 642 ($60 at CC) plays .avi just fine.

But does it play it from a DVD? A lot of players that do Divx, avi, mpeg, jpeg, etc. only read it from a CD.

Yup, it reads .avi/Divx/Xvid (and all forms of mpeg) from a DVD. I've done it countless times-- all types, -R/+R and RW.

speaking of this, are there any free sites to download software in order to convert avi, to something like a vcd.

It does NOT play .OGM or .MKV files. If you have movies in this format, you'll have to de-mux them and re-mux the parts as an .AVI. It does not play Vorbis audio either, so you'll have to transcode any Vorbis audio tracks to MP3 or AC3.

Compatibility can be a little spotty if you don't encode your movies with the DivX Home Theater profile (or the XviD equivalent). Otherwise it's a very good player for the price, especially considering that it can be made region-free with a few button presses on the remote.
