The good: At long last, Leave it to Beaver has been announced for a November 22nd release date. Available in a regular slimpack boxset, or a limited edition "Lunchbox" package which includes a "Cleaver family Photo Album". It is the 39 episode, first season.
The bad: It's going to be released on 3 double sided DVD's.
Complete story can be found here: http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=3982
No word on extras, yet. After all this time, I sure hope they've managed to add something of interest.

Gee, Wally, I don't know....
I wish they would put some effort to some decent extras instead of a lunch box.

I wonder if they'll include the original pilot, with Harry Shearer as the Eddie Haskell character? They showed it on Nickelodeon a while back.

As long as they play properly, I don't have anything against double sided discs.
A lack of extras never bothers me. I'm just glad whenever a show I love gets released on DVD.

I prefer the new Leave It To Beaver, I remember enjoying that show when I was little, too bad I don't think they will release it on DVD but if they do, I wouldn't mind picking it up...

I like double sided discs for things like this. I only object to them when I have to get off my ass to flip it to finish a movie. Hell, even my LD player autoflips.

Interesting! I've never seen that. I hope they do include it.
re: doublesided, I like artwork on my discs. I've never had a problem with playing them. They're just not as nice to look at.

I am not the biggest fan of "flippers" but when it really ticks me off is when it seems really unnecessary. For example, there are two Fox sets that I buy, MASH and Bob Newhart Show. MASH comes with eight episodes on one side, and Bob Newhart comes with eight episodes spread over two sides. I guess compression can be argued, but I just don't understand why they can't release the same three disc set for Bob Newhart and do it like MASH where there are all 8 episodes on one side of the DVD and artwork printed on the other side.
"Ward, you were a little rough on the beaver last night."
That's wrong... but it feels so right.

I must be nobody, because I LIKE double-sided discs. I DON'T like sets of 3, 4 or more single-sided discs!!!
I don't like that TV Land bug either!

I don't have a real issue with double sided discs, but I was a bit pissed at Columbo since they have done something different with every single season. Season 1 was a fold out cardboard case with single sided discs, season 2 they went with 4 single sided discs inside of two standard keepcases (with the insert tray to hold two discs) and with Season 3 they went again with two standard keepcases, but this time went with 2 double sided discs. I had an issue already with disc 1 side B freezing up midway in the Robert Culp episode.
If you are going to use 2 double sided discs at least have the decency to put them in a single standard size 2 disc keepcase to save my shelf space. With the way Universal did it 2 discs are taking up the same space as 4. I'm really gaining nothing by getting 2 double sided discs other than a much higher chance for a defective disc.
Thanks, Universal.

Yeah, there was a different father too, I think it was Richard Deacon, who ended up playing Lumpy's father.

Damn. You beat me to it. I told this to a co-worker today that loved the show and he'd never heard it.

DVDFreaker,
I've tried both and nothing beats some older Beaver. I guess it depends on what mood you are in.

I think it was called "The New Leave it to Beaver". It wasn't on one of the big three networks, maybe TBN or Disney?
It had Barbara Billingsly, Tony Dow, Fred Banks, Ken Osmond and Jerry Mathers in their original roles just older and with family

No. It was Casey Adams (aka: Max Showalter).
WALLY -- "Gee, dad, we didn't mean to get Mr. Rutherford {with the 'barrel hoops'}."
BEAVER -- "Yeah, we yelled 'meathead' and he came runnin' out."
---------------
JUNE -- "Who's Cornelia Rayburn, and when did she see YOU off your feet?!"
---------------
JUNE -- "Ward, why don't you ever bring me flowers?"
WARD -- "I'm the kind that says it with seat covers."
---------------
WALLY -- "Gee, dad, if a girl called here for me, you wouldn't tell her I was in the bathtub, would ya?"
WARD -- "Well, Wally, with the number of baths you take, I don't think the risk is very great."
---------------
JUNE -- "I hope Beaver had something to eat over at the Mondellos."
WALLY -- "I wouldn't worry about that, mom. Every time you go over there, somebody's always eating."
---------------
WALLY -- "Women are funny -- maybe they like to smell like old catcher's mitts."
---------------
EDDIE HASKELL -- "Good morning, Mrs. Cleaver! Gee, Mrs. Cleaver, your kitchen always looks so clean. My mother says it looks as though you never do any work in here."

Still The Beaver premiered on Disney Channel in 1985 after a CBS TV movie of the same name was a huge hit in late 1983.
The show moved to TBS in 1986 and was retitled The New Leave It To Beaver and ran until 1989.
I have about 50 of 90 episodes on tape. I had a BIG TIME crush on the girl who played Wally's daughter, Kaleena Kiff. She also played Patti on Tony Randall's show, Love, Sidney.
Most of the cast returned and Ken Osmond's real life sons played his on-screen sons.
The movie sucked compared to the shows. Just like The Little Rascals movie sucked.
EDIT: OOPS. Here's (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0088616/) the link to the show page at the IMDB. Not much info though.

S.1 LITB UPDATE (AUG. 26, 2005).............
Universal has added a synopsis to its webpage for "Beaver Season 1" -- with the very good news that the "Original Pilot Episode" (which was entitled "It's A Small World" (http://www.geocities.com/alcus2/smallworld.html)) will indeed be included on the Nov. 22nd 3-Disc DVD set.
The Pilot is not really very good, but it's definitely a valuable addition for "completist" sake on the LITB-S.1 collection (IMHO). Jerry Mathers and Barbara Billingsley co-star in the "Small World" pilot, with other actors playing Wally and father Ward. I commend Universal for its inclusion here.
Here's the blurb from Universal.......
"Finally, one of the most beloved series from television's Golden Age comes to DVD for the first time ever! Join the Cleavers, America's quintessential family, in all 39 digitally remastered, unforgettable episodes from the complete first season of Leave it to Beaver! Theodore 'Beaver' Cleaver (Jerry Mathers) can't seem to avoid trouble, and his older brother Wally (Tony Dow), and mischievous pal Eddie Haskell (Ken Osmond), aren't any help. But with some wise advice from his father Ward (Hugh Beaumont) and mom's (Barbara Billingsley) home-cooked meals, Beaver learns that all's well that ends well. Complete with the original pilot, brought out of the studio archives, this must-have DVD collection will have you declaring, 'Gee, that Beaver sure is a swell guy!'"
Well, that is good news! Notice that they also list the price as $39.98, where TVShowsOnDVD.com says $49.98, for the regular edition.

Andicus......
Those prices on Universal's site are NOT the "MSRPs" -- they are the after-discount prices that can be obtained through their own "store" on that site. I, too, thought the same thing you did a while back when looking for the MSRPs of other Universal items. They always discount a certain % like all other e-tailers.
I believe the MSRPs for the Beaver sets are $49.98 and $69.98.
Perhaps for that latter LE price we'll also get a lifesize cardboard cut-out of either Mary Ellen Rogers or Julie Foster as well. That'd be kinda sweet. :)
