View Full Version : Off to Iraq...a few parting thoughts

So, I have a rough estimate for departure between Sept 4-6 for my 23 hour (assuming everything goes smoothly) flight to Iraq. I'll be there through the holidays, which is probably the hardest part of the whole thing. Hopefully my little guy will handle it OK. I can't really give a ton of details about where I'm going and such, but I'll be doing medical logistics stuff not too far from central Baghdad. I'll be back (again, assuming things go smoothly) in mid-late January.

I'll have access to a computer and such, but I'm not sure whether or not the forum will be blocked by the Army systems guys. Could go either way. If I do have access, I'll try to talk with you guys about my experiences (or at least what I can openly say). I'm guessing we'll see the worst of the casualties since we're taking just about the best surgical team on the planet.

I'm ready to go...or at least as ready as one can be. I volunteered to deploy about 6 months ago, and have known for at least 4 that I was going. I hate that kind of lead up and would almost rather just get the "48 hour" call to pack my bags.

Personal disclosure: Heterosexual white male, 33, Air Force Captain, Medical Service Corps Officer, and dad. Originally from Arkansas. I grew up very very poor, but as an officer am fairly comfortable now. Undergrad at Southern Illinois. Masters at Baylor. Currently living in San Antonio. Edit to add: "engaged" because fiance read this and is wicked insecure.

Political disclosure: As some may recall, my politics lean a bit to the right on economic issues in terms of free markets and fair taxes. I'm what some would probably consider "far left" on social issues. I'm basically a "live and let live" kind of guy and am intolerant of intolerance. I don't have a problem with paying taxes and understand that the government has a function, but unfair taxes (think estate tax) irk me a bit. I tend to vote democrat for lack of a better option, but I'd happily vote for a republican or two if they'd distance themselves from the wacky (IMO) religious right. If anything, I'm truly a guy without a party.

Iraq disclosure: I'm not a raving "blood for oil" type, but I'm not a "rah rah" guy either. Again, I'm somewhere in between. I don't have a problem with going into Iraq, and I wish we'd done it in '91. But I do have a problem with the way this war was presented to the American people, which I think was disingenuous at best. As far as Bush goes, I try not to disparage my CiC, but I'm far more interested in serving the United States Constitution than I could ever be in him. I didn't vote for him, but I respect that enough people did. In short, I do my job, without complaint, and I give my best effort because people depend on me...not necessarily because I think we're in a noble cause...and certainly not because I think it's making the U.S. any safer.

I don't think I'll personally be in any significant danger. Other than occasional mortar-fire, things are pretty quiet where I'm going. And I can take care of myself. I'm an expert marksman on both the M-16 and M-9 and was a former Navy Corpsman (Marine medic) with a bit of field experience. All in all, it won't be bad at all. As I understand it, I'll actually be living in some sort of trailer with actual air conditioning. Other than running water, it will be just like home. Well, like home with no sex, no beer, no days off, probably no football...sigh.

For any who are wondering why I'm bothering to post this, I'm hoping to access the forum while there, and am hoping that talking with you folks will help pass the time and anchor me to home a bit. Oh, and don't let me see any of you in a t-shirt that insults my intelligence or my manhood when I get back. ;) Most probably won't get that, I suppose. If I can't post while over there, best wishes to all, and please, if you can't be moderate or respectful, at least bfrank. :toast:

Considering the number of "insert shots" they do during games of troops in Iraq saying hello, I'd be very surprised if you don't get the football games over there ;)

Hope you get a chance to post while over there, it'll be interesting to get some first hand info.

God speed

I have 6 cousins serving over there right now (3 are officers & 3 are infantry) and all of them are married so they are missing their SOs as well (one of my cousins missed his kids birth by 10 days).

I appreciate what you are doing for our country and hope that God watches over you and keeps you and yours safe.

Maybe we'll have an SAN ANTONIO OTTER MEET as a farewell for you and get the folks from Austin to come down (... and I'll be the designated driver ;) ).

Wow. I appreciate all the warm wishes.

I'll definitely try to get some photos for the board, but may need somebody to host them for me.

Mike, I know what a click is...it just amuses me when the Army guys talk like that.

Again, I appreciate the warm wishes.

This is sort of off topic, but I wanted to tell this story about why I'm suddenly amused by the price of gas. I was filling up my little four banger yesterday morning and happened to be wearing my DCUs (desert camo). A gentleman at the next pump struck up a conversation, asking when I was deploying and whatnot. Amongst the small talk, I bemoaned the fact that it was costing me $25 to fill my little 10 gallon tank, and he put it in perspective for me when he said it cost over $75 to fill his Canyonaro. Suddenly, I don't mind paying $2.50 for a gallon of gas, if it means that the folks who buy these pointless monster trucks have to pay it too. So no more complaining about gas prices for me. Hell, maybe at $3.00 a gallon people would stop buying those damn things.

2 weeks and counting....

Good job about the gas chess. You bring back your can opener and I'll have the cans of worms ready for you to open.

Best wishes, chess! I am very happy and proud to know that there are people like you representing us in the military. There ARE some beautiful sights to see there, so I hope you get lots of time to check it out. The area has a FASCINATING history. Hope you have fun learning about the region! Be safe! If you've never tried a chicken shawarma, I highly recommend it. Kind of like a gyro, but I think much better.

Back to vent...

Today was supposed to be the day. Went in this morning at oh-dark-thirty with 5 bags of necessities (mostly issued stuff that I don't need but have to have) with my family in tow...had a teary goodbye and waited around for 8 hours or so, just to find at that due to some "problem with the plane" we would be leaving tomorrow instead. So I was carless, phoneless and irritated...waiting for a ride on a school bus back to civilization...oh well, at least it didn't happen at one of our stops en route...and I get to spend another day with the family.

So we're on for tomorrow...allegedly. I'll believe it when I'm wheels-up.

Incidentally, I don't imagine most folks can appreciate how absurdly heavy body armor is. You picture some ultralight kevlar stuff, but that only works against bullets and isn't so great with shrapnel. What we have is a vest with strategically placed ceramic plates that altogether wiegh 40-50 lbs. I'll be in fairly comfortable environment, but I have a newfound level of respect for those kids who wear those things patrolling the streets of Iraq in 115 degree heat. When I see those guys over there, I am going to seriously hook them up...with whatever I (as a fairly resourceful logistics guy) can get my hands on.

[end rant/observation]...back to your regularly scheduled 24 hour coverage of the Aruba thing. ;)

Oops sorry didn't know

I remember getting chewed out arriving 2 minutes late to a detail because some idiot forgot to tell me that I was "volunteered". So after getting yelled at for 10 minutes about making sure i'm on time and all that crap we spent 3 hours waiting around in the hot sun until finally the NCO in charge of the detail shows up and says "Oh. Things got messed up, you can all go home". Wonderful.

'sup, fellow medical service corps officer? I'm on the Army side of the house, though. I'm staring down the last two months of my deployment here, and cannot wait to come back home for good. I have a good picture of the theater's medical assets because of my job, and so I think I have an idea of where you're going and what you'll be doing.

With regards to forums access, I haven't had a problem (except finding the time).

Travel safe and feel free to hit me up on my military address if you have any questions or want to talk shop: michael dot sharma at us dot army dot mil.

Very cool. I just finished the Army-Baylor MHA program, which I'm sure you're familiar with...or are probably a graduate of...so I'm familiar with Army MSCs. Met some very cool people.

AFAIK, I'll be using Army supply channels for most of our assets, but I'll be up to speed on those quickly.

Come home safe.
