Arcade Game Challenge #46 - Block Breaker: No. "Block Buster" Yes!

In these threads we play arcade games that are emulated on PCs, and compete for the highest score.
You have to take care of finding the games yourself.
Click here for the list of all the past winners and high scores.

The Rules:
  1. To enter, you just play one of the games and post a screenshot with your score.
  2. Once all the games have a score, the deadline to post any new scores will be 72 hours after the last screenshot is posted.
  3. The winner can pick any game that we haven't already played for the next thread. Don't forget to pick a new game, or I'll do it for you!
  4. Any games should be played with one credit and no continues or any features not on the actual machine.
  5. If you play and beat any of the high scores from the previous games we've played, you can submit them for the All Time Top Scores.

The Games:
(click the games for info and how to play)

Arkanoid - Score to beat: D300 115940

Current Leader Chooses: Columns

Lode Runner - Score to beat: devilshalo 189530

Current Leader Chooses: Make Trax

Thief - Score to beat: D300 41640

Current Leader Chooses: Pipe Dreams

Thunder Blade - Score to beat: IgnatiusReilyII 1053890

Current Leader Chooses: Donkey Kong 3

The Prize:
Whoever gets the high score for one of the current games picks the next game that replaces it. You also get your name engraved permanently etched onto this eye catching trophy with a genuine Sharpie!

Defending Champs:

Actually I thought it might be best to just let you choose. Nobody seemed to like my last two choices, so...methinks why not let Roto spin the wheel of fate and see what comes up!

Yeah, well you must get tired of choosing half the games every week.

Holy crap! Do you have a flight stick or something? I'm still trying to figure out how I want to set up the controls. I have yet to play it using the throttle. The only version I played before was on my Sega Master System. Thunder Blade never worked in MAME until recently.

Heh. No, I'm just using me ol' Logitech WingMan, but thanks. I really didn't think that score was all that impressive, as it was just the result of my fifth try. (I hadn't played it since '87-'88.) That's why I didn't even bother naming a new game.

But...since I'm thinking of it now, let's aim for DONKEY KONG 3. (You've already played the first two. Might as well complete the trifecta!)

I'm not sure if it is all that impressive, but I played it a couple of times without using the throttle and only got to the second stage, which you're well past.

What are you moping about, devilshalo?

It's impossible to finish this level unless you get the remaining "lode" in devil's screen early, which is difficult because the spider guys are swarming all over you then. But if you wait, they're locked in where you need to drop down...and they won't move. I can't decide if this is a flaw in the initial design or not.

Well, I re-read the rules and if there were no other scores for the other games, it would just continue. So now that there are scores for everything, the 72 hour rule is in effect. Roto is just trying to stall so he doesn't have to play Make Trax.

It is funny how the game rewards you for not "killing" anything. Maybe someone should pass this along to the recent gaming lynch mob on Capitol Hill!

It gives you even more bonus if you don't trap any...

Try level 9...

I'm trying to stall because I may not have an internet connection next weekend when I'm finishing my move.

Plus I REEEEAAAALLLY don't want to play Make Trax. The only reason I know that game is because when I first found out about arcade emulators there were maybe a couple dozen playable games, and that was one of them.

I actually used to play it in the arcade.

You have a spinner, don't you? I tried avoiding Arkanoid as long as I could, but I had to pick 3 games and I love those old Breakout games. Arkanoid being the best of them.

I think on the PC version you could make your own levels, or it was the shareware game called Popcorn.

Yeah, well you were a spoiled kid. The only arcade I got to go to around that time was the 7-11 on the corner, where I would go buy a pack of Marlboros and a Butterfinger for my mom's roomate. If I was lucky I'd get a quarter to play the Pac-Man machine.
