International dvds on dvdaff
Hey guys. Read the entire FAQ. Did a search. So take it easy on me if their are some quick answers to this. So Cameron finally went region free a few weeks back, (U.S. edited Kung Fu Hustle got me) and has been doing some research on buying some titles from overseas. Been lurking over here in international for too long. While browsing some of these titles at koreandvds and yesasia, i had noticed some great cheap films. Also some american movies at great low prices.
What i couldn't find, are whether or not many titles are listed on dvdaff. I don't want to buy bootlegs. And have taken some words to heart in this forum. I don't exactly understand why some of these movies are so cheap (though i gather cost of living factors and so on)
just wondering what kind of luck you have had keeping these in an online catalog. Do these have upc codes to type in.
any other suggestions are greatly appreciated. First title I plan on picking up is Peking opera blues. I also saw disney titles at koreandvds that i don't have, and don't mind paying 3.99 for me.
feel free to school me.

I've bought literally hundreds of imports, including Region 0 from HK, and Region 2, 3, 4 from various sources. If you stick with reliable etailers (YesAsia, DDDHouse, Layoyo, EZYDVD, Amazon.co.uk - etc.) your chances of getting stuck with a bootleg are minimal.
There have only been a few times (maybe 5 or 6) when the DVD I imported was NOT already on DVDAF - check out my listings for Japan, Hong Kong/Asia, Korea for example.
As for the UPC code - well, for the title you mentioned (Peking Opera Blues) I have the legit Megastar release, which was on DVDAF. The UPC code is on the DVD, but it is 13 numbers as opposed to the 12 numbers we normally see here in the U.S.
I haven't actually tried to find something on DVDAF using one of those 13-number codes.
Hope this helps ....

thanks. That is very insightful. I guess i won't know what I have until its in hand. What about all the american titles on koreandvds though. Is that legit.
I am going to assume that is the best version of peking opera blues you mentioned....where would i pick that up.

FYI, the transfer is okay (not anamorphic), but the subs leave much to be desired.

just because it's not listed on dvdaficionado, doesnt mean its a boot.
I've submitted a few Japanese releases that were not on the site before,
but some they turned down, if the cover art was the same.

Well, I don't think dvdaff should be used at all to determine if it's legit. I've added close to 100 titles to aficionado because there weren't there, some of which have never been release on DVD. Upon importing without adding, I've imported titles and saw "DVD+R" beside them because it's well known there is no official DVD release, yet someone was allowed to add them. I've also seen people's lists with "VIDEO TRASNFER" listed as the medium suggesting it's a VHS rip. That site is more a place to keep a list of a personal collection more than anythign else.

I've added a few titles to dvdaff that certainly weren't bootlegs. I wouldn't fret about it. Plus, you get a warm and fuzzy feeling getting your addition approved. A warning sign is if you see something in their database that has the same cover as what you're wondering about, but it's Region coded (rather than Region 0 or 1 like you might have seen from an online vendor). That's pretty much a bootleg giveaway.
