I'd like to see how many of you trust the government, overall.

I have a debate going on another board on the subject.

Nope. I don't trust anyone other than my close friends and family.

The question is a little too black and white, but if I was forced to answer yes or no, I'd have to go with no, never.

No, we should always keep a close eye on our government, which is why a strong and independent press is as important as any of hte three branches of government.

Yep. The founders had a pretty strong distrust of government in general.

Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely

I trust it about as far as I can throw an M1 Abrams.

They'll win my trust if they tell the American public where Area 51 is located with pics. :D

4 answers because
No, not when Republicans are in power
and
No, not when Democrats are in power

are just the opposite of the first two answers, are they not?

Of course not.

Mosquitobite, you are going to let us know who wins your arguement aren't you?

Personally, I don't like the choices of the poll, so I had to choose no. I don't trust government on it's own, but with plenty of checks and balances in place (including the press as some have mentioned), the system we have can work.

You have No, never or Yes, always. What about Sometimes? The party stuff is nonsense.

"No, never" and "yes, always" are pretty absolute statements and not very good choices in my opinion.

"Generally no" and "generally yes" would have been a couple extra choices I'd prefer.

I concur with X. I answered yes, but what I really wanted was: I generally give the government the benefit of the doubt.

Good point!

And the others were also saying I only see in black and white. What were they thinking!?

I basically trust government as much as I do the media.

As a matter of fact - probably a little more.

I feel exactly the same way.

I've worked for the government and I can tell you that in my experiences the people I worked with wanted nothing more than to help improve this country. Yes there were a few "bad seeds", but overall I think most are doing what they think is best for this country and I trust that they are - and going about is honestly.

I trust the structure of Gov't we have... now if you want to talk about individual people (or maybe departments/agencies) that's another story ;)

I trust them to:
*Lie to me
*Overtax me
*Spend my my hard earned taxed dollars on crap I care nothing about

I voted "no" but for the items above they are actually quite trustworthy.

What he said. I'd let the government house sit for me, but I'd make sure my Nannycam was set up.

So, based on this poll why is everyone taking one side or the other if they don't trust either side?!

Or is it that they only trust the candidates from their party but once elected, they distrust them?!

I trust the government of Lichstenstein because I know it doesn't have any impact on my life whatsoever.

Libertarians don't trust the government. THAT'S a surprise. -rolleyes-

:p

Actually, I agree.

I think "the government" is too multi-faceted a concept to say you trust it or don't trust it. A few million people, doing millions of different jobs at any number of quality/integrity levels... feh.

As for any given politician, unless I know them personally, then no, I would not trust them. Why should we?

As long as neither party messes with the Second Amendment, there's really nothing to fear from the gummy-ment....except for taxes.

I'm sure that the government lies to us for our own good. If that doesn't inpire trust, I don't know what does.

Never, but less now than ever.

Had there been a "less when republicans are in power" option, I'm sure I would have picked it.

We have a pretty good form of government, though. It was set up by a group of men profoundly mistrustful of government, and loaded with checks and balances almost to the point of inaction, except on a very few subjects which everybody can rally around.

Not exactly. In fact, I usually tend to agree with the Founder's belief in a deferential representative government. With that being said, I generally trust the whole picture provided by the federal government, if not the specifics. I will admit though, certain events from the last fifteen or so years has made that level go down.
