I'm trying to get a cheap Ipod... i know that theres a 4G and a 6G..in reading reviews I saw this:
"The 2nd generation mini is cheaper: the original mini was $250 for 4 gigabytes of storage, which holds up to 1000 songs. The new mini is $200 for 4 gigabytes, or you can pay $250 for 6 gigabytes (up to 1500 songs). To achieve this price drop, though, Apple no longer includes a dock or charger - these are available separately, but you can live without them just fine. For example, the battery charges whenever the mini is plugged into your computer's USB port. "
What is a"dock" and do you need it to make it work. In other words, if I buy a 4g ipod for $200, am I going to need to buy a dock to make it work...if so won't that get me closer to the $250 mark - which I should have? bought in the first place.
What do you recommend.
Do people actually need more than 1,000 songs?
Thanks everyone.

No, you don't need a dock. All that is is a cradle you put the Ipod in to hook it up to your computer. As long as you have the firewire or USB 2.0 cable, you can hook the Ipod directly up to the computer.

If that is all you listen to, then probably not. I listen to a lot of lecture series, books on tape, old time radio, etc. so it can eat up the space pretty quick. I have a 60gb for every day use and a mini in the car. If I just listened to music, the mini would be great.

Depends on the person. I have 3,300 songs on my Dell DJ. I like having my whole music collection on something I can take to and listen to anywhere.

Josh - how long have you had your ipod?
How do you figure out if you have firewire of USB 2.0 cable.
My wife's computer is a Dell (about two years old) Inspiron 600m. How do I check for those things?
Thanks again for all your help.

He doesn't have an ipod, he has a Dell DJ. I have the same Dell 600m and I don't recall firewire on it, but it does have USB 2.0

HE DOESN'T HAVE AN IPOD!!!
He has a Dell DJ MP3 player instead of an ipod that he uses with his Dell computer. An Ipod will work with a Dell just fine, however.

The ipod dock is a waste of $40. The included usb cable is just fine.

Do people actually need more than 1,000 songs? We have a 4G 40Gig Ipod which came with the dock. We got an iSkin to protect the iPod which means it doesn't fit in the dock unless we take the skin off. We just use the wall charger.
We have about 10k songs on our iPod and I've probably listened to most of them so far. I need to go back and add a lot more though... I feel like I never have enough music.

You know, I don't have a skin on my mini and just use the belt clip that came with it. Have never had a problem with it, or any worry of it getting hurt when I take it out of the car. The 60 gb one did get a few light scratches, however (different material for the case) and I do use a cover for it, now.
