I am looking for a dvd recorder under $500 that will do just about everything. The main features I am looking for are that it works with my direct tv dvr and can use almost every format including multi region playback. HELP!!

I don't think there are any multi-region playback features on any recorders so you're probably SOL for that requirement.

I believe the CH 1600 and the LiteOn 5005 have multiregion capabilities.

OK sorry. if you want a DECENT recorder that's multi-region, you're SOL :)
Doubt it is like a nice Panny EH50 or Pioneer 533, though. Incidentally, most decent recorders are now under $500, like these 2 I mentioned.

I'll probably be buying my second machine next month. Sony is coming out with a 160GB dual-layer recorder that upconverts to 1080i. I believe it also works with all formats. To me, the only thing missing is being region free but that's what I have my malata for.

That's what I'm waiting for. Dual layer. But I'm not jumping on any of the first couple.

There have already been pioneer model(s) that incorporate dual-layer recording.
But know that it's DVD-DL which is different from DVD+DL which has been out for a while now. The discs just came out.

Yep. That and other bleeding edge issues (like price) is why I'm waiting. I picked up a Panny ES10 for something to replace my VCR, but that is just a stopgap purchase.
My coworker does burning on his PC. His first attempt at DL was not great. Even my Denon 2900 had a 3-5 second pause at the layer change. I haven't researched it, but I'm sure others have done better when recording.

Never had any problems with any of my PC dual-layer recordings. All work perfectly on my Malata. But my panasonic DVD recorder won't even acknowledge them.

So, are you saying there's no layer change pause at all?

Ok we seem to be getting off the topic a little. So what is the best DVD recorder available right now for under $500 with the most options?

Sorry about being off topic. Check this out:

Probably the one I'd buy if I wasn't waiting for dual layer. If you haven't looked through there, that forum has lots of discussion and comparisons.
