Intolerable Cruelty - Any one else slowly liking this film...
I had high hopes for this movie when it first came out, but ended up being let down. I suppose my expectations for this comedy were just set all too wrong.
However, HBO has been airing this film over and over (and over). I must say this movie is growing on me. Seriously, its getting funnier and funnier each time.
Anyone else have this happening to them?
How about this scene...
Two lawyers (Massey and Wrigley) and their client are in a courtroom. The client, Rex, wants to know if either of the two lawyers have argued in front of a particular judge..
Rex Rexroth: Have you sat before her before?
Miles Massey: No. No, the judge sits first. Then we sit.
Rex Rexroth: Well, have you sat after her before?
Wrigley: Sat after her before? You mean, have we argued before her before?
Miles Massey: The judge sits in judgment. The counsel argues before the judge.
Rex Rexroth: So, have you argued before her before?
Wrigley: Before her before, or before she sat before?
Rex Rexroth: Before her before. I said, before her before.
Wrigley: No, you said before she sat before.
Rex Rexroth: I did at first, but...
Miles Massey: Look, don't argue.
Rex Rexroth: I'm not. I'm...
Wrigley: No, you don't argue. We argue.
Miles Massey: Counsel argues.
Wrigley: You appear.
Miles Massey: The judge sits.
Wrigley: Then you sit.
Miles Massey: Or you stand in contempt.
Wrigley: And then we argue.
Miles Massey: The counsel argues.
Rex Rexroth: Which you've done before.
Miles Massey: Which we've done before.
Rex Rexroth: Ah.
Wrigley: But not before her.
The movie is filled with lines.
Can't forget:
What, are you nuts? Have you forgotten "Kershner"?

I like it too. I think it gets unfairly slammed because it compares unfavorably to the Coen Brothers' past movies - but compared to most romantic comedies today, it's the cream of the crop. (I'll take it over Legally Blonde any day!)

Huh? Who didn't like this Gem of a movie? It was a very funny movie overall but the chemistry between Jones and Clooney alone makes it great. When i heard they added Jones to "ocean's 12" I really hoped her character would someohw get involved with Clooney's. But they still went with the Roberts chick as his love interest.

This movie is a lot like other Coen Bros. efforts in that it takes time for it to really grow on you. I also find it funnier with each viewing, but nowhere near the repeat viewing pleasure I get out of The Big Lebowski.

I had the same reaction, and I'm surprised how much I've warmed up to it. Not my favorite Coen Brother's movie, but definately in my top 2 or 3 romantic comedies.

A wildly inconsistent film.

still sitting unwatched on my shelves (along with many other blind buys). Guess I'll pull it down and see for myself

I first saw this on a midnight flight to England, and I kept the entire plane awake laughing at it... Oh and I might add, I drank business class out of Jack Daniels... So I switched to Johnny Walker. END OF STORY.

I had high hopes for this movie, and they were all exceeded the very first time I saw it. I've watched it a few times since then, and I still love it.

I never cared much for it, but some of the dialogue is wonderful, and Clooney and Jones are excellent leads.

I liked this film on first viewing. Kind of middlin' Coen Brothers (which means much better than most movies). Not up there with Miller's Crossing, The Hudsucker Proxy or Blood Simple but much better than Raising Arizona, O, Brother... or The Ladykillers.

I have no idea why so many people dislike it.
If not for that, I don't think it would get the bad rap (bad rap, isn't that an oxymoron?) that it has.

I had gotten this film as a blind buy and really enjoyed it. My only beef however is that there doest seem to be a third act.
That was the only letdown of the film.

I always thought the main problem with Cruelty ( and probably The Ladykillers) was that the Coens didn't do the script. Their best work is always written by them. Even so no movie by them has been a waste of time yet and practically all of them seem to have legs.
