Square-Enix 2005

There is a bunch of news from the Square-Enix show that is going on right now, so I figured I would start a thread to compile all the info in:

PS3
*The FFVII trailer was shown once again, but this time without the "Technical Demo for PS3" subtitle. Could this mean the game is coming to PS3?

PS2
*FFXII has been dated for a March 16, 2006 release date for Japan.
*FFVII: DOC will feature Online play.
*Hikaru Utada will return to sing the theme song for Kingdom Hearts II

All
*World of Mana has been confirmed for multiple versions of multiple platforms.

Me too. It's been almost three years since they first unveiled screenshots of it. It's supposed to be coming out this November.

World of Mana has me intrigued.
Bummer with FFXII taking so long though, I figured it'd be out in Japan in December and in the U.S. in March. Seems like it'll be almost a full year before we see it hit retail.

I like hearing about FFVII, a remake would be welcome.

FFXII - I'm not liking the direction on this so far, it looks and sounds too much like a single player version of FFonline...er...I mean FFXI...I'm disappointed that FFX's battle system didn't stick...turn based strategic combat, yay! (Ignoring the fact that FFX was super-easy).

Dragon Quest VIII - out soon...change jar stocked...I'm a Dragon Warrior IV fanboy...

Glad to see a new Mana game. Expecting some sort of online with it, makes sense. 2 or 3 player Secret of Mana on SNES rules!

Release got pushed to "Winter" so it may not come out until early next year.

Noooooooo!!!!

no doubt there's tons of voice acting in the game too, that'll make it take even longer for a US release

According to the latest EGM, Square is doing an FFVII remake for the PS3.

Can't wait for FFXII, the game looks great!

I really hate the way FFXII looks. Apparently the director (previous credits include Final Fantasy Tactics and Vagrant Story) left the project and a good portion of the development team has jumped ship to Sakaguchi's Mist Walker company for development of Blue Dragon. Not sure if that's all true or not and even if it is I doubt it'll have any real effect on the final product.

I don't think there's a "PC" way to describe how the main character looks.

Last you heard was all speculation. No formal date has been set yet.

Geez, who makes up these wacky rumours? Square Enix has posted an official announcement about this already: (got it from GAF)

1) Matsuno was very, very sick and hasn't been able to work on FFXII. He is very sorry but he's better now and everything will be done by 3/16.

2) FFXII is still 100% Matsuno, he is credited with the original plan, the scenario and is the supervisor on the project.

3) Itoh and Minagawa have been bumped to director positions to keep the team together in his absense and he's 100% supportive of that.

4) Kawazu is simply taking over Sakaguchi's previous position on the FF games because he's the most senior staff at Square Enix working with the Square side at this moment. This doesn't mean the game is moving or has moved to any new direction, simply that Sakaguchi left and he's taking up the executive producer spot.

Thanks for clearing that up.. it did seem a little suspicious when I read it this morning. For the record, I read it on Magic Box which is usually pretty good on reporting international game news. Another interesting bit I read was that the PS2 FFVII trailer was shown but with the TECH DEMO caption removed.

IGN has a preview for FFXII and there is a Images section which shows some gameplay screens. They all seem to be from July 2004 so who knows how much has changed since then.

IGN's FFXII Preview

Gameplay images start on page 4.

Nice.

Does anyone know if voices can be turned off in the game? That was one of the aspects I disliked the most about FFX. Just ruined the mood.

The voices didn't get to me as much as whole "the more real the characters try to look the more NOT real they seem" syndrome. Just in the opening scene where the whiney boy gets his close-up.. his face is pretty damn good looking.. but then his necklace is painted onto his neck and his hair.. well.. yeah. It's just creepy to me.
