I am looking for something cheap <$300 and it does not need to be something great. Basically just for my old man to use AOL and Microsoft Office. No monitor or anything else. Any suggestions?

not sure where you are at in Illinois or if it matters.

(probably get a better informed response in the Tech forum)

In this weeks Best Buy ad, they advertised an E-Machines AMD Sempron 3000+ Computer with 17" Flat-Screen Monitor - 256 MB DDR memory - 80 gig hard drive - DVD/CD-RW combo drive for $299.99. It is actually $449.99- $150 instant savings. I looked on their site, but couldn't find it for a link...you might try looking at your nearest store though.

my first suggestion is to toss ms office in the can and go for free openoffice.org.

http://www.openoffice.org/

i use the beta version extensively for a number of different things and it does have some bugs here and there, but nothing serious compared to the power behind this application. yes, it works on windows, too.

you can ditch photoshop by going with the free gimp for windows...

as for cheap computers... here are two places to start looking...

Try Dell's Refurb center. They have some decent computers (no monitor included) at some low prices.

Check out some of Dell's specials ... you can usually get a pretty cheap package with a basic computer and a crt monitor.

Though, I don't prefer this route, try the local paper. Our local "Greensheet" has P2 and P3's real cheap! Just make sure the hardware works then wipe the drive and install the OS.

for $441.01 Office depot brick and mortar and online has I didn't see it marked down in store yet or on their general website. On their main website it shows up as $732.01, but I found it on their website looking at particular stores in Baltimore. Used the $30 of $150 coupon and got it for $419.01 plus tax.

dell always has some sweet deals in their "small business" section...

http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/outrageous_desktops?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd

$329 for a dimension 3000 + 17" flat panel monitor.(celeron)
or
$399 same thing but with P4

i don't know why anyone would buy from anywhere else....
typically its free shipping also, and dell really doesnt care what
type of "small business" you have.

I agree w/aj9.

I picked up a computer a few weeks back from Dell.

My father decided to get one from Dell and emailed me the invoice. I quickly called him to say he should cancel the order since he ordered the home way.

He found that he could go up one model and get a free 19" flat screen monitor for the same cost as the home order.

He called to cancel the order he'd placed at 10 PM. It was 2 PM the next day and it had already shipped!

They said to just refuse it and they'd take back the other one at no cost. Amazing!

No it does not.

In the spot where you list your business name just put down Ruk Industries.

Check eCost.com too. Often they have refurnished HP/Compaq PCs that are pretty cheap.

If you are near a Fry's, they frequently (almost every weekend) have a Linux operatiing system AMD computer for $199. A couple of times in the past few months, it has gone down to $149 for that computer. I could see it being $99 by Black Friday. As for Windows XP OS machines, Dell's $299 deal that comes and goes every few weeks is the best bet.
