I am curious if the speaker setup used in movie theaters is the same/similar/or totally different than the 5.1/6.1/7.1 setup used for home theaters.

Similar. To 5.1, I believe. Calibrated, tuned, equalized differently due to the much larger room.

I have always wondered the same thing. I have also wondered which speakers and amps the theaters used.

I remember there had been a thread here about this quite a few months ago. A theater employee answered it with some really great info, and maybe even a couple links, if I remember right.

What I remember from it, is that it can be different depending on the theater style. Almost all have 3 speakers behind the screen to cover left/center/right (for conversations) and surrounds up the side and around the back. 70mm theaters have a little different setup, I think.

I'm sure that info is unsatisfactory and somewhat wrong, I'm only posting it to draw someone out that knows more. :D
