(Official) So You Think You Can Dance Thread

I noticed that no one had created a thred of that new show that comes out tonight, 7-20-2005, called So You Think You Can Dance.

In case you havent heard, the creators of American Idol have teamed up with FOX, American Bandstand, and the American Music Awards to create a show all about, ....... dancing .......

Yup, 12 weeks of nothing but dance and more dance. The show had three major casting calls in Chicago, NYC, and LA and picked 50 finalists to be a part of the show. The 50 dancers will compete over the 12 weeks and one by one be wideled down to 16 people and then to a final 4 dancers.

And who decides who wins and loses? Well the judges do at first (5 professional dancers - NOT celebrities!). Then when we get down to the final 4 people the judges step aside and America will be given the chance to call in and vote for who they think should be rated the #1 dancer in the country.

And what do they win you ask? $100,000 and a one year lease on an apartment in Manhattan. Which they claim is the ultimate prize for any aspiring dancer. (Sounds kid of cheap to me.)

The show will air on Weds at 8PM on FOX.

Here are a couple links for more information:

PS: Its been confirmed that Paula Abdul will be making guest appearences on the show during special pre-recorded "dancing across America" pieces where she goes around the country and dances with normal average folk.

The show lost me after the AI producer said that guy from Julliard was not "masculine" enough during his performance. He's a classically trained ballet dancer!!! What the hell did the judges expect!

It almost looked down-right discriminatory.

If the producers are paying the rent on that apartment, that is one hell of a nice prize.

I watched about 15 minutes of it. I saw the fat black guy dance really well, and another dude showed off the callus on the top of his head from sliding around the floor on it. It didn't hold my interest.

I thought the funniest moment came on the end when the host who played the Ryan Seacrest role congratulated the 29-yr-old girl who danced (and looked) like Britney Spears for making it to Hollywood. A clean-shaven (bald), somewhat older man appears on camera:

Man: "she is amazing, she made it as a singer in American Idol, now she made it in this dancing competition, you're great!!!"
Girl: (kisses the man on the cheek) "thank you you have always been so supportive!"
Host: "It must be great to have such a supportive father"
Girl: "Uhh no.... he's my boyfriend"
Host: "Oops"

This was on for 2 long exhausting hours. Like the others, I thought it was a real bore. Don't need another dancing competition show. There's been several of them. Fame, Dance 360 or something, Wade Robbins (?) show on MTV, etc. Doubt it will do nearly as well as AI.

Certainly no match for Dancing with the Stars. Interesting that Carrie Ann is a judge on this Fox show along with DWTS.

Sadly I saw most of those. I'm sick of watching egotistical little punks embarrass themselves without getting to see the results when they are shamed by their friends and family afterwards. It's just not satisfying enough to see them fail on national TV.

I thought being able to dance well, or at least having experience with choreohraphy, was already a prerequisite to be American Idol? This is just a watered down version of an already popular program...and the title isn't nearly as catchy. SYTYCD? Even the acronym is annoying.

Ok so I watched it yesterday while doing housework. The dancing was really fun to watch. 1 pet peeve. 2 Asians on the show. And in the 1 episode I decide to watch they are trying to get rid of both of them.

zuffy what did you think of Ryan's solo? I'm not particularly a breakdancing fan but that was crazy. I swear he shoulda broke his neck on that one flip.

Daniel, as some of those judges would say, that was sick or bad ass. I don't even know how he stay vertical with his elbow. Ryan is actually a favorite of mine. Just seem real and happy to make it so far.

I hope Allen get his ass booted already. The fat dude is gay as hell (not that there is anything wrong being gay) and can't dance for shit. It's the same old everytime. Mia sucks for kissing Allen's ass.

Is allen that big guy? If so yeah he needs to go. Looks like he's only been hurting his partners' chances. As with the albino girl. Not sure if she was on the chopping block (she might have been Ryan's partner), but uh she doesn't belong.

Starting watching this with the wife again after missing the last couple of shows. While I like that they let the big guy through, it's obvious that he's not versatile enough for this competition (and he proved that during the screening process too, as the ballroom teacher wanted him gone)... though he did a better job than I expected.

I think both asian dancers were victims of bad pairing... though both really wowed in the individual performances. The more you're there, though, the more people will get used to your routine, and the more likely you'll fail to get votes the next time unless you change things up.

I'm not a dance afficianado by any means, but some of the dancing is just amazing. While some of the auditions were funny, the larger group stuff right after that was sometimes painful to watch because of all the people who could dance their own stuff, but not choreography. But this stuff is pretty good... anyone know how long they stick to the pairs?

I was very impressed by that one guy who got ballroom for the past three weeks, and did a great job this past time.

I was wondering about the pairing too, since I thought there would be a sole winner. But I may be wrong, since the partner dancing has been so emphasized. And I totally agree, I'm not knowledgable about what makes dancing good/correct (though I can do a few of the basic dances seen on the show) but a lot of the routines/choreography are utterly mindblowing. Even the hiphop routine with Ryan and the Ruskie, was very impressive. There was one flip that Ryan did where he was coming off of some hold with her that made guffaw.
