problem on my new dvd player

Hi

sorry if this is a newbie question, but i am really confused.......
I have bought a Philips 642 dvd player in Wal-Mart yesterday, I hooked it up today and tried to play a few anamorphic widescreen 1.85:1 and 2.35:1 dvds on it.
I tried the dvds with my 4:3 tv, strangely the black bars at the top and the bottom are smaller than it use it be when i play those dvds on my PS2 or on my computer, then i tried to hook it up to my widescreen monitor and the there are black bars at the side of the screen, the video was chopped at the side of the screen, i tried to play the same thing on my computer and PS2, i noticed that the picture was chooped on the dvd player, i mean like at the beginning of the lost in translation dvd, i could see the arms of the girl with my PS2 and computer, but with my dvd player, the arms are chopped off.....
i tried the 16:9 mode, 4:3 ps, and 4:3 letter box mode and they are all chopped off at the side.... is there something wrong with the dvd player or is there something i dont understand?

also... the 4:3 ps mode and the 4:3 letterbox mode looks the same on my player..... it is faulty?

thanks in advance, and sorry if it is hard to understand... english is not my first language =)

edit: included picture... should be easier to understand =)
the upper one is the output from the DVD player
the lower one is dvd playing by the computer

Most DVD players chop off some pixels on all 4 sides of the picture. Mostly only the sides matter since the top and bottom are always black bars, anyway. The Philips line is not great, I imagine there is quite a number of pixels chopped by the player.

I didn't realize they did this one, but Secrets found it to have 5 pixels cropped from each side. That's actually not as bad as some. Link
