Franz Ferdinand: You Could Have It So Much Better...With Franz Ferdinand - 10/04/05

1. The Fallen
2. Do You Want To
3. This Boy
4. Walk Away
5. Evil And A Heathen
6. You're the Reason I'm Leaving
7. Eleanor Put Your Boots On
8. Well That Was Easy
9. What You Meant
10. I'm Your Villain
11. You Could Have it So Much Better
12. Fade Together
13. Outsiders

The album has been recorded in a studio located Alex Kapranos’ home in rural Scotland, and was mixed at Avatar Studios in New York. The band are now finalising the tracklisting, and are choosing from 16 songs.

Songs played live like ‘Your Diary’ and ‘I’m Your Villain’ are competing for space against self-proclaimed “knockout punches” Franz have been saving like ‘Turn It On’ and ‘Do You Want To?’ – both potential comeback singles.

Other tracks expected to appear on the album include ’Outsiders’, ‘Walk Away’, ‘Eleanor, Put Your Boots Back On’, ‘You Could Have It So Much Better’, ‘What You Meant’, ‘Well, That Was Easy’ and ‘Evil And A Heathen’.

As overplayed as this album was last year, I still like it, and am looking forward to more.

Ditto. The "brown and creme" album really grew on me so I'm looking forward to this one.

I like the idea of no titles. Sometimes album titles are pointless anyway.

Anyway, can't wait for their next album. The first one was something of a surprise, and quite fun.

Zeppelin used titles. They were roman numerals, but they were still titles. And they also had other, titled albums.

Works for me. Loved their first CD and never remember album titles anyway since they're largely irrelevant. I would think that most people identify an album by a particular song or the cover art anyway.

I kind of like the idea of their album covers all matching some overall scheme. Certainly for people in the DVD forum that love all their DVD covers to look nice and consistent, there is something to the idea of having all your CD covers match.

What about their fourth release, commonly referred to as "ZOSO"?

Have you ever tried to have a discussion with someone about Peter Gabriel albums. It's confusing as hell.

I can already see it:

"Do you like that Franz Ferdinand album"

"Which One"

"The purple one"

"Wait, do mean the violet one or the lavender one"

"NO, the purple one"

"Well, they have a red one"

NEW YORK (Billboard) - Scottish rock band Franz Ferdinand is about a week away from locking down the track list for its second album, which will be released Oct. 4, according to lead singer Alex Kapranos.

The group, whose self-titled debut album yielded the hit single "Take Me Out" -- one of the more ubiquitous tracks of the past year -- hopes the follow-up will capture "more of the energy we have as a live band," he added.

"I like the first record and the sound of it, but I'm not sure it completely captured that kind of unpredictability and rawness you have at a live concert," Kapranos told Billboard.com by phone from a studio in Britain.

He also said the band experimented with a lot of different rhythms. "We still want to make people dance, but we didn't want to repeat the same beats."

To that end, on the new track "Outsiders," the group piled into one room around drummer Paul Thomson. "He had this weird contraption of a drum kit where he was playing half with a tambourine in one hand and the floor tom between his legs -- just to experiment with different ways of setting up," Kapranos recalled.

The new album, released via Epic Records, will most likely not have a title, and will be distinguishable from its 2004 predecessor only by its color scheme.

"There's so many albums I have that I don't refer to by their real titles," Kapranos said. "The second Specials album is called 'More Specials,' but I always just call it 'the second Specials album.' I'm also quite interested to see what will happen, because I know people will choose their own name for it. It's a little bit of an experiment."

From a selection of about 25 songs, Franz Ferdinand is mixing 15 songs, 12 or 13 of which will make the final cut.

The first single will likely be "Do You Want To?" Other tracks expected to make the album include "Walk Away," "Turn It On," "I'm Your Villain," "Evil and a Heathen," "This Boy," "Well, That Was Easy," and "You Could Have It So Much Better."

He noted that a handful of cuts needed more attention than others, particularly "Walk Away."

"I wrote it on an acoustic guitar, just chords and a vocal melody," he said. "We arranged it in so many different ways. We had some versions with just me sitting with a guitar, others with a full-on rock group like the sound of the first record. I even re-wrote the whole chord progression for the beginning of the song. But in the end, we came back to what was pretty much the original version we were working on when we went into the studio."

"I'm Your Villain" was also "completely re-arranged. We even re-wrote the bass line and the chord progression."

Kapranos said he'd like to release these alternate versions someday, since "I always find it interesting to hear bands going off on different tangents."

Franz Ferdinand's first album reached No. 32 on The Billboard 200 and has sold 941,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. "Take Me Out" hit No. 3 on Billboard's airplay-based Modern Rock chart.

"You don't have 'neds' in America, but across the U.K., they're young, vaguely loutish teenage kids who dress up in track suits and like causing a bit of a riot," Kapranos said by way of introducing one of his favorite stories about the song's popularity.

"A friend of mine was on a train in Glasgow and there was a gang of neds running up and down the train, smashing stuff up and singing 'Take Me Out.' She was actually a bit stoned at the time as well, and she thought they were singing it directly at her! She felt extremely paranoid, like, how do they know (Franz Ferdinand are) my pals?"

The group will begin a North American tour in late September, one of the first few dates of which will be an appearance at the Austin City Limits festival (Sept. 23-25).

Wow. Vegas is getting two good acts in a one month period (Sigur Ros and now Franz Ferdinand).

I really liked their first album, so I'll be picking up their second outing.

did I miss their show in MI?

Sarcastic reply: did you?

Rephrased question: Did they already do a show in MI for this tour?

They haven't done tour dates in America for a few months IIRC.

This tour is being done specifically to promote the new album.

Vegas goes on sale August 20th. If The Killers can sell out within minutes at The Joint here, I believe Franz would do the same. Meaning I will be at a computer on Ticketmaster.com the moment those tickets go on sale.

I hope this new record is an improvement over the debut. I thought it was a good album, but ridiculously overrated.
