Which current actors or directors would you most like to see make a big comeback?

Directors:

Francis Coppola
I think he still has one more great movie left in him, but he may be too tired of the movie industry to ever make it.

John Woo
After his last three crappy movies (M:I-3, WINDTALKERS, PAYCHECK), I'd love to see him come back with something as cool as FACE/OFF, though I fear he's already been totally neutered by Hollywood.

Oliver Stone
I wish he would go back to making relevant, cutting edge flicks like PLATOON and NATURAL BORN KILLERS instead of overblown period garbage like ALEXANDER.

Actors:

Chevy Chase
For awhile he was like a heterosexual Cary Grant, but then he blew it by appearing in one lousy movie after another. QT needs to resurrect his career.

Rachael Leigh Cook
She hasn't had a hit since SHE'S ALL THAT and has appeared in a string of forgettable flicks, but I'd like to see her take Katie Holmes' place in the next BATMAN.

Michael Keaton
When you start appearing as a negligible supporting character in HERBIE remakes, you know your career is sinking fast. Paging Ron Howard.

Mira Sorvino
Did she retire or what?

Robert De Niro (should be working in better films with people like Scorsese and Eastwood)
Chevy Chase
Christian Slater
Eddie Murphy

i assume they have to be effectively retired from filmmaking because a list of great directors or actors that need a comeback from the crap they are making now would be gigantic.

Ingmar Bergman would have been my first answer. fortunately for me, he has a new film that i'm going to see this thursday.

and I agree with Coppola. would like to see him make something from his own screenplay someday soon.

Harry Dean Stanton (Always great)
Timothy Dalton (Way underrated as Bond)
Judy Davis (Great actor and she puts the ilf in...never mind)
Ron Lacey (No one does a better melting to death scene.)
Peter Weller (Where'd Buckaroo go?)

Oh yeah- Directors

Chris McQuarrie (I liked The Way of the Gun better The Usual Suspects and Singer is still out there making bitchin' movies.)

I wouldn't mind seeing Steve Guttenberg in a big film again. I know he's in The Poseidon Adventure, but is he in the theatrical or the television version? I forget.

Steve Guttenberg rules, don't pretend like he doesn't.

He's in the TV version, and I'm looking at his face on screen right now as we mix Poseidon.

Cary Grant’s Torturous Love Life

In this week’s “Personality Parade,” Walter Scott writes that in addition to marrying five times, Cary Grant had affairs with men throughout his life. Below is more on Grant’s complicated romantic life:

According to Marc Eliot’s 2004 biography of Grant, Cary Grant (Harmony Books), Grant was romantically entangled with several showbiz men after arriving in New York from England as a teenager in the early 1920s. One of his boyfriends was the Broadway producer Reginald Hammerstein, a grandson of Oscar Hammerstein II. By the early 1930s, with Grant now a rising Hollywood star, gossip about his sexual preferences threatened his career. Several of Grant’s sexy co-stars of the time—including Marlene Dietrich, Tallulah Bankhead and Carole Lombard—indicated that Grant was not interested in women. Grant’s longest relationship was with the actor Randolph Scott, with whom he lived in the 1930s, and continued to see even after his first marriage, to actress Virginia Cherrill. Later, Frank Sinatra taunted Grant while they worked together on the movie The Pride and the Passion in Spain in 1956. Sinatra was jealous that he and Grant’s co-star, Sophia Loren, was attracted to Grant, so the singer referred to Grant as “Mother Cary” on the set. Rumors continued to fly on and off about Grant’s sexuality. In 1980, Chevy Chase said of Grant, “I understand he was a h*mo,” on the late-night talk show Tomorrow. Grant sued Chase for slander and the case was settled out of court, with Chase reportedly paying Grant $1 million.

Pesci's semi-retired...

Burt Reynolds needs to do a Tarantino or Rodriguez flick...

Eddie Murphy NEEDS to get back to his roots, R-rated comedy. Hopfully QT can do something for him in Inglorious Bastards...

Mel Gibson, as an actor... I was hoping for Mad Max, but that doesn't seem to be happening. His next two (Under and Alone & Sam and George) sound good and have great directors (Antoine Fuqua & Richard Donner).

A great John Woo movie would be nice... The Red Circle & The War of the Red Cliff might be okay. But sandwiched inbetween them is the He-Man movie.

I'd like another good John Cusack movie too. He never seems to make a bad movie, it's just been two years his last one...

Terry Gilliam needs a break after The Man Who Killed Don Quixote fiasco (see Lost In La Mancha, good doc on trying to get a film made). Hopfully The Brothers Grimm will get him back out there.

Charlie Sheen... Come on it's Chuck fucking Sheen...

That's it for now I guess...

He's already filmed his next movie after The Brothers Grimm. It's called Tideland.

Mira Sorvino really needs another good chance. She is a quality actor with an appealing look. There is no real reason why she hasn't struck big.

I also don't understand why Dina Meyer did not hit it big. By far the best thing about Starship Troopers and made good contributions to Bats and the latest Star Trek film, together with a swathe of TV roles.
