Are you a person of faith?
Because the 2nd sign of the gaming Apocalyse is upon us:
Signs to signal the Apocalypse of gaming:
1) EA buys exclusive rights to major Sports licensing screwing gamers out of actual good sports games
2) MTV enters arena making "daring games"
3) Ben Affleck starts a gaming company with focus on catering to the 12-16 year old male. (ie tits and gore)
4) Nintendo gives up trying to convince people there games are good and converts into a fishing business
5) Saten walks the earth removing all game consoles except for the CD-i which can only play joint MTV / Ben Affleck / EA extreme sports games.
Slow day...
MTV will now develop its own software.
MTV LAUNCHES NEW INTERACTIVE ENTERTAINMENT DIVISION: “MTV GAMES” MTV’S INTERACTIVE ENTERTAINMENT STUDIO, “MTV GAMES”, TO INCUBATE & PRODUCE ORIGINAL GAME TITLES FOR THE MTV AUDIENCE; PLUS CREATE INNOVATIVE STRATEGIC MARKETING PARTNERSHIPS WITH GAME PUBLISHERS
New York, NY (June 27, 2005) – MTV: Music Television today announced the launch of its newest division, “MTV Games.” Dedicated to developing, producing and promoting unique and creative gaming experiences that resonate with MTV’s audience, MTV Games will work in-house through its newly created interactive entertainment studio, along with industry partners, to produce and market original video game titles. MTV Games will incubate original game franchises in partnership with independent game developers. In addition, the new division will forge strategic marketing partnerships with game publishers to connect with the MTV audience across multiple platforms. MTV will work closely with publishers, leveraging its unique brand and marketing capabilities to maximize the success of each MTV Games release.
“In 1996 we launched MTV Films with the hopes of discovering some risky and bold stories to tell. Nine years later, I’m ecstatic about what we have accomplished, and today we launch MTV Games with a similar objective -- incubating breakthrough gaming concepts that embrace creative risk-taking, and push the boundaries of interactive entertainment,” said Van Toffler, President, MTV Networks Music/Logo/Films Group.
“Technology, creativity and entertainment have continually adapted, expanded and melded together to create successful new industries,” said Jeff Yapp, EVP, MTV Networks Music and Logo Enterprise Group. “MTV Games is an exciting new division with enormous possibilities within an ever-evolving industry. We are forging into new territory and are enthusiastic about this unique and exciting new way of working with game publishers and independent game developers.”
As part of today’s announcement, MTV Games unveiled a strategic relationship with Midway Games Inc. (NYSE: MWY), a leading interactive entertainment publisher and developer, to market, jointly sell in-game advertising, and collaborate on soundtrack development for three upcoming games. Under the deal, MTV and Midway will partner in a mutually beneficial royalty sharing structure. The first release from this partnership will be “L.A. RUSH,” a high-octane, arcade racing game that allows users to fully embrace the car-tuning culture with creative design assistance from West Coast Customs, the automotive customization authority featured in the hit MTV series, “Pimp My Ride.” MTV Games and Midway will announce the two other gaming titles to be released under the agreement at a later date.
MTV Games will also be a dedicated gaming laboratory and interactive studio for the creation, incubation, and development of new original game titles culturally relevant to MTV’s audience. In addition, MTV will tap MTV Games as a new creative hub, extending game concepts into larger entertainment franchises that have the potential to transition into television, film and more.
In addition through strategic marketing partnerships, MTV Games will market a diverse slate of releases to core gamers and casual gamers alike, with unparalleled audience reach via broadcast platforms including MTV, MTV2, mtvU and others, online portals, wireless applications, outdoor platforms, MTV Films, and much more. MTV Games will also partner with publishers to sell in-game advertising, collaborate on game soundtrack development, and develop complementary television programming. In the coming months, MTV Games will announce additional publisher partnerships.

The Newlyweds simulation: watch how your decisions can lead your sims to a romantic fairytale in a large mansion atop the Malibu beachside, wearing Gucci glasses and Prada shoes. But be careful...too much greed and jealousy will cause your sims to forclose the mansion and move to a trailerpark, where you will be forced to wear the inevitable wife-beaters and John Deere cap only to live a life of black-eyes and cheap beer.

The video game industry is just becoming more and more like the movie industry - there will still be a lot of great, groundbreaking games, only they'll be very obscure and underground. The (m)asses will eat up the big block-busters - and there may be a couple of good games in there - but the really interesting stuff will have to be sought out, just like the indie/foreign movie market.

It's just sad the one of the greatest games I've played this generation (Psychonauts), was first dropped by Microsoft, and when it finally did get picked up and released, it failed miserably (sales-wise). At least it got released, so the "gaming-fans" are to blame too, since Psychonauts didn't have hookers you could kill, and wasn't "extreme to the MAX!!!!".

I certainly understand how all of you feel about MTV entering the game buisness... but I have to say if they approach making games in anyway near the same way they approach making movies, we may be seeing some interesting stuff. Granted, they have put out some real boners, but they also gave us Election and Napoleon Dynamite. They take chances, I'll give em that.
Just trying to be optimistic here.

If by "chances" you mean carefully researched teenage market research, I agree.
Nothing against N.D. or the like, I just don't see MTV execs. comishing their movies after being persuaded by a script writer and a dream, I'm sure they research the hell out of it, just as they market it.
But you are right to be optimistic, MTV (viacom) has lots of money and can make interesting things happen for sure.

I really think they (with certain films) have taken a fresh approach to movie making, and I just hope they take the same approach to game development.
And trust me, I hate MTV with a passion, so for me to give them any praise.... well it hurts me.

Does this mean we get videogames that are based on MTV2's Video Mods? That could create an interesting loop that never ends.
Either that, or it could suck, which I'm guessing imost of these games will.
