Ramones: Weird Tales of the Ramones 4xCD+DVD Box Set 8/16/05

Rhino Prepares Definitive Ramones Box

David Nadelle reports:
Ramones albums tended to linger at the ass-end of the charts, but time has been kind to the "brothers" (their music, that is) and certainly with good reason, as the band widely credited as the first punk group still continues to influence legions of delinquent dreamers across the globe. Legacy preservation means oodles of compilation albums however, and Rhino Records is poised to release the latest-- and the mother of them all. The 4xCD+DVD box set Weird Tales of the Ramones will be out August 16 and will feature Forest Hills' finest in all their three-chord glory, from the debut album's lead-off hitter "Blitzkrieg Bop" to the Motörhead-penned "R.A.M.O.N.E.S."
So what's so special here that will entice anyone to grab this offering instead of just picking up The Best of the Ramones, one of the All the Stuff and More or Ramones Mania volumes, or any of the many other collections kicking about? Well, apart from some interesting cover versions and videos it appears that the motive for Rhino is sheer volume-- more than 100 songs and videos over four discs! But besides having every Ramones song you'll ever need, the clincher just might be the box's packaging, which will pay homage to one of the most cartoonish bands ever by including a comic book highlighting 25 comic/graphic novel artists (and Ramones fans). Among the commissioned artists featured are Rick Altergott ("Doofus"), Mary Fleener, Sergio Aragones (Mad Magazine), Carol Lay, John Pound (Garbage Pail Kids/Meanie Babies), Bill Griffiths ("Zippy the Pinhead"), Xaime Hernandez ("Love and Rockets") and John Holmstrom, who is well known in Ramones circles for his illustrations on the seminal Rocket to Russia back cover and liner notes, and also on the cover of 1978 Road To Ruin album. Shockingly, Rhino haven't unburied any rare 17-minute prog workouts by the band and have instead opted to go for shitloads of two-minute songs that we all know and love. So, deep breath, here are the tracks:

>>Disc One:
01 Blitzkrieg Bop

I'd prefer to be able to buy the DVD seperately (I already own all the audio many times over on the original CDs, plus various re-releases and compilations), but count me in anyway!!!

Amazon.ca has it listed for $63.99 CDN.
Anyone see what the artwork looks like? Coming from Rhino there is no doubt it will be a well put together set.
