OldBoy - August 23rd (Tartan Video)

From DVDAnswers:

Tartan Video has officially announced Oldboy which stars Min-sik Choi, Ji-tae Yu and Hye-jeong Kang. The thriller, from Korean writer-director Park Chanwook, will be available to own from the 23rd August, priced at around $24.99. I'm afraid we don't have the full details on the technical specs for this one yet, although Tartan has confirmed the addition of an English Language track for the first time. The packaging also seems to indicate a Korean DTS track. Extras will include an audio commentary by the director and cinematographer, an interview with Park, deleted scenes and a trailer created by Nikolas Pueringer, a University of Wisconsin-Madison student who beat 132 other entrants in a promotion on iFilm.
Hmmm, Tartan UK released a 2 disc set loaded with extras...

And that's one ugly ass cover...

...futher uglified by that stupid quote...

How about "Grand Prize of the Jury, Cannes 2004" instead...

or at least the correct quote:

"...arrives with the Quentin Tarantino seal of jealousy, cause he wishes he could make a film as good as this one..."

Yup, except R1 releases should be discussed in this forum, not in the international forum.

That is actually the image from the official poster for the theatricial run here in the US. I actually quite like it (minus the quotes) and own a copy of the poster.

I can't wait for this. I've yet to see the flick but I've heard enough to warrant a blind buy.

I didn't realize that the specs for the US version that's being released next week had been released back in August. I considered getting the UK R0 version when it was released back in February, but figured I'd wait for the R1 release, but now I'm regretting that as based on the specs for the US release it looks like I'll be getting the UK version after all. It seems kind of strange to me that they only included 1 of the 3 commentaries that was on the UK release, and the one they picked was the one with the director & cinematographer, which according to DVDBeaver.com's review of the UK release (here), "notes upon the technical aspects," rather than the one with Park by himself, which in the reviewer's opinion was the best of the commentaries. I assume they'll be releasing a special edition with the 2nd disc in the future (possibly to coincide with the release of the US remake next year?) so that all the stuff in the UK release will be available on one R1 release (with the possible exception of the UMD (Ultimate Money Dump) exclusives), but I think I've waited long enough.

One other thing - on Amazon.com's page for this (here), they list the running time as 115 minutes, not 120 as listed on IMDB. On DVDBeaver's review of the UK release they list the length of the film is 1:55, due to the 4% PAL Speedup. Amazon must be mistaken as surely Tartan didn't source the Region 1 release from the PAL transfer, right?

Cover's alright, but I hate that damned quote. Why the hell has Taratino's 'seal of approval' become the ultimate standard for foreign films?

blind buy for me on this one. as another poster above mentioned, I've heard countless amounts of good things about this movie, so I shall be purchasing it. the cover art would be pretty neat if it was just the signs and the title of the movie.

Has anyone seen any early reviews of the region 1 DVD? I was trying to look around the net for some this morning, I was hoping to find out if it's really cut by 5 minutes as some have stated.

No no no, you've got it backwards. See, US DVD covers are always ugly, tasteless piles of trash perpetuated by the Hollywood cows who know nothing except making money. Foreign covers are beautiful masterpieces, and should be used to show us brainless shills a thing or two about artistic integrity. Get it right.

For the record, I think this R1 cover looks like a bad photoshop job done by a 5 y/o. I would feel exactly the same about it if it came from any another region.

But thanks for the useless rant, I hope you feel better.

Does anyone know if this R1 release is cut in any way? The reason I ask is because on amazon's site, some of the user feedback comments are saying 5 minutes was cut from the film. Or was that just the same as the theatrical run here in the states?

It's about a guy who got kidnapped and imprisoned in a room for 15 years because he kept asking questions he could easily have found answers to by using Google or the "search" function.

Oh alright but just this once!

Tartan UK R2

Distribution Tartan Asia Extreme

Region 0 - PAL

Runtime 1:55:04 (4% PAL speedup)

So maybe the R1 is just a port from the R2 and there are no cuts? I should get my review copy shortly and will be able to compare with the Korean version.

Tartan loves their PAL --> NTSC transfers.
