Penn & Teller Bull****: "Big Brother" 6/13/05
Showtime, 9:00pm CDT (repeated one hour later)
Has our surveillance society made our lives more convenient? Has it succeeded in deterring crime and terrorism? Are the watchers just a bunch of incompetents as prone to distraction as the two bit rent-a-cop security guards at your neighborhood mall? Have the freedoms guaranteed us by the Constitution become just another load of Bullshit? In this episode, we'll watch the watchers and discover what role human nature plays in data mining and surveillance. We'll unveil the latest, and scariest, technologies and prove just how easy it is to get the goods on anyone - even you. Security? Freedom? There's bullshit on all sides!

So are they going to be going after the Patriot Act in this one?

I'm not as paranoid as some when it comes to things like surveillance cameras, finger printing, dna, etc. I guess I'm in the camp of "If you aren't doing anything illegal, you have nothing to fear."

Until they want to frame you and then they have your fingerprint and DNA on file to plant, welcome to 2005 Lee Harvey Groucho.

Just like I'm of the opinion, "if I'm being prosecuted, I don't have to get up there and testify to prove my innocence -- you have to prove that I'm guilty."
It's not a matter of paranoia, it's just a matter of caring about my privacy.

Really enjoyed last night's show, although I didn't really feel like the "experiment" fit. Having Bob Barr on as it related to the Patriot Act was a very nice move. While I thought the show lost a little steam as it began to look into the new technologies, overall it was very good.

Just like you to think you know the probability of things completely outside of your control. Get over yourself!

I think it was a somewhat lackluster, inconsistent show typical of most of this season so far. Not all that bad, except by their own standards, and not classic like so many in the first two seasons. They just need better topics. Fortunately, after next week's "Hair" anyway, they appear to be on the way.

No shit - and those were some great ones. Not to mention the filthy talk. That was awesome and a great little test.
I thought this was a pretty good episode - probably one of the more even-handed episodes, which I suppose is what made it boring for some.
Professor Orin Kerr, author of the Patriot Act, is a contributor to my favorite constitutional law blog, so it was interesting to hear from him, even though I have an opposing view. I have some problems with the Patriot Act, and I also believe that granting government more power in times of crisis likely means that such power will never be returned. At the same time, I do think a fear of Big Brother at this time is pretty much unfounded.
