Hellsing is getting a re-release, though that's still a killer price for the normally overpriced box...

Also, this may be in last month's thread, but it's worth noting here:

"Congratulations on yet another school year under the belt! School can be quite a challenge... finding creative ways to sleep through classes, taking extended lunch breaks, and coming up with excuses for missing homework assignments... it's definitely not easy! So how about a little reward for all the students who put so much effort into this last school year?

From now until 6/5, get 40% OFF Retail price on all currently available ADV Films and Softcel DVDs and 33% OFF all currently available ADV Manga and Audio CD titles!* This means you can pick up fantastic new releases like Cromartie High School, Elfen Lied, Gantz, and Madlax for a steal!

How? Just use the following reusable coupon code when you check out through our online store:

Coupon Code: school
Expires: 6/5/05

Plus, if you're a Got Anime Member, you can use your membership to get the highest level in savings!"

So for an ADV title that is 29.98 retail, the discount comes out to:
29.98 * .6 = 17.99

With the 10% GA Membership, which is stackable:
17.99 * .9 = 16.19

As for whether or not the GA membership is worth it: It's not applicable to the awesome weekly special deals, but the real benefit is when there's a studio sale, like the ADV sale above. They have studio sales about once a month, though it varies, and they usually cycle through all anime studios (Geneon, Funimation, Bandai, ADV, Tokyopop, Rightstuf, Viz, Animeigo, Media Blasters, etc.) with the occasional manga only sale at around 35%. It's also useful on preorders, where the discount on especially Geneon titles is pretty good if you buy a few weeks before release (after which they raise the prices). I'm just including this because if you just take a cursory glance at rightstuf, it seems way overpriced; but there is a reason they are so popular in the anime-buying community. They also have great customer service.

I promise I don't work there (though I am blowing a lot of money completing my platinum EVA set and working on a few other unfinished series)

Just went to bestbuy and picked up Kiddy grade 8 and Tenchi gxp 7 and 8 to finish up my box set. Saw Last exile vol 7 there for $25, but it came with some type of postcard set. Anybody know if that's rare? By the way, great price on Trigun. Bought it for $150 when it came out and was worth every penny.

fujishig
06-02-05, 07:59 PM
the Last Exile 7 with postcards is definitely limited: Best buy is the only place that I've seen them in, actually, and even my preordered Rightstuf copy didn't come with them.

Okay, I know this is a bargain thread, but I need some advice: I picked up two cheap volumes of Get Backers from BB, and am thinking about filling out the series (well, what's out now) with the TRSI sale. Can anybody recommend it? I started to watch volume 2, but saw that it starts off in the middle of an arc... Also debating whether to continue Peacemaker Kurogane, whose first volume put me to sleep.

Also of note: DDD has been raising their ADV prices: single volumes are now up to almost 20 bucks. You can look at it two ways: one, this makes the TRSI price seem even better, but two, people are speculating that they're raising prices in anticipation of a 20% off sale (my take is, they only seem to be raising ADV prices for now, and even with 20% off, TRSI is comparable). So make of that what you will. For me, that just increased how much I'm ordering right now... :)

Oh, also Giant Robo 3 has been reported at 9.99 at Best Buy, though 4 (the Ginrei specials, not really part of the regular OAVs) is 14.99.

The Fushigi Yuugi boxsets, Trigun, Hellsing, and Tenchi sets are all great, great deals. I bought the Saber Marionette boxset last week, and got a signed copy... a great deal, especially because the only part it's missing, Saber Marionette R, can be found for 5.99 at Best Buy.

justbarelymovin
06-02-05, 08:49 PM
Well, that's the LE version of Vol. 7 of Last Exile. Every volume has a LE item (while supplies last), but you probably won't find any of them in stores now except for Vol. 7. When there's something LE inside, they'll be a sticker on the outside saying so.

Anyway, I've watched Get Backers through Volume 4, and I've really enjoyed it so far. I'd like to watch the rest of the series, but I'm waiting for some better deals on the last few releases.

Too bad TRS always puts up great deals on everything I already own (Trigun, Hellsing, Fushigi Yugi, Escaflowne, etc.). Ah well. ;p This is why it just doesn't seem worth it to buy things as they come out anymore.

Same feeling here too. Bandai and ADV Films have just announced a number of re-releases at very attractive prices.

Escaflowne The Movie: Anime Legends Edition $19.95 MSRP
Jin-Roh: Anime Legends Edition $19.95 MSRP

These are 3-disc sets  under a signature series/essential anime type of product line. I think they have the same discs as their former incarnation but in a less fancier packaging.

Najica Blitz Tactics Collection $39.98 MSRP
New Fist of the North Star Collection $29.98 MSRP
Orphen II Collection (600 minutes) $39.98 MSRP
Pretear Collection $39.98 MSRP

ADV spokeman mentioned that these are shows only collections. They have no on-disc extras and have less disc count than the original. Only FMP!, RahXephon and Noir Collections have the same discs as the original.

All these priced down collections make me wonder why I've been collecting the individual volumes...(not that I own all of them though).

I still can't get over that there was an Orphen II. I'm sorry, but I felt bad for my brother because he actually bought the show! He did end up selling it, though. I just... didn't care for it. It seemed okay at first--maybe it was that break cut that got me. Ha ha. Well, anyhow, I don't think I'll be investing my money in -that-.

I do prefer individual keepcases to bricks any day, though.

Luckily I don't really jump the gun as much until I find a stellar deal these days, so I can't complain too much. Besides, I need to slow down on my purchasing because I've got so many DVDs I need to watch still!

This is what we get for being faithful DVD Talk members. ;)

I'm one of the few people that prefers bricks apparently unless its a series I REALLY love. For general anime, bricks are more than enough for me. I can't wait for that Orphen 2 box. Anime extras are usually pretty skimpy in the first place (unless its a TRSI release ;)) so I don't mind stripping the extras.

The TRSI specials this week are evil. So much box set love. Since there's gonna be a re-release of Hellsing, are the Fushigi Yuugi and Trigun boxsets going to have a re-release as well? Those boxsets have never been on sale before anywhere before, so its kind of odd that it would have such a drastic sale unless there's a re-release or price drop soon.

Personally, I hate bricks, because IMHO, they're really ugly. I like ADV's new thinpak releases, though.

Fushigi Yuugi was originally released ONLY in the box sets, which were really expensive. They've since released them in individual disks which, combined together, are still much cheaper than the original price of the boxes (but comparable to the TRSI sale price). I'm surprised, however, because I didn't think there were many original boxes left out there. Trigun already got released in the Geneon Signature series individually, but even the first release didn't come with the box. I got the original release (missing only one foil cover) but I'm still not sure if I'm nuts enough to rebuy the series just for the box. I've never gotten Hellsing, however, so I think I'll jump on that. Like I need yet another series to collect.

The move to cheap(er) boxsets is a little disturbing to me, actually. I don't mind if they're a year or even 6 months after the normal release: but Media Blasters has been doing this for a while (releasing the exact same disks in their original packaging for cheaper right after a series is over), and recently Geneon's been offering boxsets at the same time as the last disk is released. In Geneon's case, the savings isn't that much, and the original disks come with limited extras, but still. ADV seems to be experimenting with thinpak cases, but otherwise will release bricks. And Bandai will release cheaper collections in either a brick (Kikaider, Crest of the Stars) or in some funky, non-functional packaging (Scryed, Witch Hunter Robin, .Hack) that makes you wish you got the original release (can you tell how much I hate the WHR "book"?). Unless it's Gundam, which usually just gets a regular DVD in boxset collection.

Fair enough on the thinpack releases. Those sound pretty nice, and if I didn't already own FMP!, Rahxephon, Najica, and others in entirety, I would definitely be all over those.

I just -don't- like those brick cases because, while they're supposed to be practical, they seem to break in areas easily, or when they arrive, discs are loose, or some other mayhem occurs because of the poor design.

I think the packaging for Zeta is the best of all the Gundam series. I really liked what they threw together, and the slim cases are nice. I like the whole deal, really. They already have started releasing each DVD on its own, I believe, so I guess you can go that route.

Yeah, no individual release for Zeta yet.

Not sure if you just hate thinpaks, mifuneral, but the figures seem more like a bonus to me. Sure, they added some cost, but you get ten volumes for 200 bucks... that's 1 volume for 20 bucks, before discounts, even, which is pretty cheap, and I doubt individuals would be any cheaper. Personally, I thought the packaging was well done, and they even solved the lack of individual inserts by having the booklet... for a longer, older series, I prefer that it takes up less space.

Thinpaks also seem to be popular, now, with ADV seemingly giving up on bricks and moving toward thinpak boxsets, and Geneon's recent Stellvia box + volume 1 + thinpaks for the rest of the series. also, a lot of TV series are going this route, and personally I like them better than either bricks or those cardboard cases...

None of the BB prices are actually listed on the packaging. There is usually staff around the place that can pricecheck stuff for you without waiting in line. I'm not sure if the deals still exist, but its worth doing a pricecheck at least. I just bought Steel Angel Kurumi and Dai Guard last week, so I'm guessing the deals are still around. It seems they restock them too, since I went there last month, and they didn't have the two I bought in stock.

Well, while the packaging and the price may be great, there are still a lot of grumbling about these issues:
1. Bandai America couldn't get the rights to the Opening and Ending songs, so they're instrumentals instead. Not a huge deal for me, but for purists...
2. the subs are not 100% accurate. This is noticeable when someone says a name in Japanese, but the sub says something totally different. While it is distracting, it's still not a dealbreaker to me. What makes it worse in some people's eyes is that it seems like the subtitles are like an early version of the dub script.

It's also a rather old series, which you wouldn't be able to tell from the flashy box and coverart (this is similar to Dunbine). But it is a classic, and as I said, while they may release them as singles later, they probably won't be any cheaper than they are now.

As others have said, many Best Buys haven't actually marked down their anime DVDs, but just take 'em to the register, and they should ring up for what we have them marked here. If for some reason something doesn't ring up properly, mention it here, and I'll put a note next to said product.

I really do think it's worth it, and if you could score it during DDD's 20% off sale, it'd be a total steal. I'm really pleased with the set overall, and the little beef others have had with it seem pretty trivial to me.

Ordered Now & Then Here & There.

In the past, BestPrices appeared to have price-mistakes but actually was charging the "new" price for the series. That could be what's happening here, with some kind of condensed, non-box-set version of this. In any case, I already OWN this series (paid $50 for it), but I had to get another one at this price because it is literally an insane price. I plan to give it to either my brother or a friend of mine.

It is a misprice and there is a rerelease at a lower MSRP, I believe its dropping to $29.95 or $34.95, most places are listing it for around $25, bestprices has the MSRP listed as $9.95. I don't think I've ever seen the MSRP drop that far on a boxed set.

Yeah, they're already being released on individual disks, 4 per season, and I guess there will be a boxset afterwards. But this is a spectacular deal on those sets. Well, it's sorta girlie, IMO. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to someone who likes the particular shows you listed, though I haven't seen Inu Yasha, so I'm not sure what that's like.

Also, about the GTO box sets -- Like I said, Tokyopop stuff (at least their boxsets) tend to go OOP. The first Marmalade Boy Ultimate Scrapbook is off the 'net (though I doubt you'd be worried about that show). So, if there's anything else Tokyopop's released that's been out for a while that you don't have, I'd go ahead and get it now before it's too late.

Hmm... it's not exactly like Inuyasha, though it does have a fantasy setting (and is also based on a manga done by a woman). It's more akin to something like Clamp's Magic Knights Rayearth, if you've ever seen that. Or even Escaflowne, minus the giant robots.

Miaka is a schoolgirl who's been transported to an alternate earth that resembles ancient China. Here, there are four kingdoms, two of which (Suzaku and Seiryu, which the two boxsets are named after) are at war. She's the legendary priestess of Suzaku who must gather the 7 (IIRC) stars of Suzaku, who each possess some power or ability, and go on some quest to awaken Suzaku and get her wishes fulfilled (so in a sense, this is kind of like the Wizard of Oz)

There's a TON of Miaka pining after one of the main characters, and romance is a big aspect of it, but there's enough action that you won't feel too bad as a guy for watching it. It's one of the few anime series I've actually been able to get my wife to watch (and that's an amazing feat, especially considering how long it is). There are a bunch of heart-rending moments if you get into the characters, and a killer one right at the end of the first box set, IIRC.

Still, it is a huge up-front investment if you've never seen it before/don't know anything about it. What other anime do you like?

Hey, Fujishig. Thanks for the informative post. I appreciate the suggestion. I'm fairly new to anime, which is why I often have so many questions. I tend to like a combination of very strong characterization and art that's often closer to realism than the traditional "big-eyed" piece, though if the story's really strong, I'll compromise on the art. Cowboy Bebop, Perfect Blue, Paranoia Agent, Samurai Champloo are all works I have great fondness for. I started watching Inuyasha on Adult Swim just to aggravate my wife who really hates anything "cartoony", but found I really, really like the story and characters. So if you have any suggestions, please feel free to send them my way.

I was also wondering if there is any good source to find out if I have all of a series? I am not as heavy into anime as most here but I like to have the entire series when I watch something. Is there a way to know if I am missing a disc for any of the other series I have?

Updated with the new weekly specials. Looks like most of the hot hot deals are back, including Fushigi Yugi, Hellsing, Tench Universe, and Trigun.
Looks like the gf is pushing I get Fushigi Yugi now.... Are there any other recommendations to get from the sale that are a good deal (can't spend too much cause of house payment and possible DDD sale)? I alredy have the other ones you and fujishig mentioned. I am only looking for complete series sets or movies (hate buying each disc of a set as they come out).

is the His and Her Bargain Circumstances DVD Bundle any different than the His and Her set I already have or is it just a lower priced version of the same thing?

I'd say grab the Trigun set if you've got some extra cash, especially since you're a fan of Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo. You're not going to find a better price on it for a while. (The cheapest on DVDPriceSearch is $125, and DDD wants $160 for it.)

animeondvd.com is a great site that has a ton of info... or you could just ask here. Most series are complete within one or two seasons, though.

There is a special ROD the TV set at TRSI that I would highly recommend: it doesn't come with any of the cases, and is all in one "book" but it's a very recent series, complete, and pretty cheap to boot. You will kinda need to pick up the ROD OAV, though.

I did not know that. Seems kinda weird that they would have someone else make that show. For $6 though, I think I will still try and pick it up (by sending the gf to get it).

I remember looking for info like this on animeondvd.com in the past and never found it easy to find what I was looking for. My trouble usually is caused by series that have individual releases and boxsets out. Sorcerer Hunters is a good example, I thought I had the whole set with the Complete Collection box but then found out I needed another disc to complete the set.

A good place to check is usually AnimeOnDVD (http://animeondvd.com/), which I have provided links to countless times. You can usually just ask us, too. Also, the reason why you had the Sorcerer Hunters problem is probably because that other disc was an OVA or bonus movie or something. Still, I think AOD provides info for all releases, so I think it is a reliable resource.

The only other thing I'd recommend is the R.O.D. the TV series (but you already said you don't have the money to dish out for that right now). Also, I must've missed this, or they must've updated with it after I posted the remaining weekly specials, so I added it to the list. I don't think they have any other complete series that are cheaper or that are worth getting and you don't already have this week. Samurai Champloo is awesome, but to my knowledge, only the first three volumes are currently out.

Like someone else mentioned, that His and Her Circumstances bundle is just the same set without the box, which is why it's only a little cheaper (I bought the one with the box).

Yeah, TRSI bought up the entire run of the special book set (this is the seven DVDs of ROD in the limited book-like case, without the individual disk packaging) direct from Geneon, and added it to the specials. There is still the "official" box set which is the seven disks in individual cases in a regular DVD box, which is more.

Great job as always, jbm...

Yeah, I have Vol. 1 (LE with the book thingy) and Vol. 4 (got it sealed in a trade), so I'm weary of buying what they have (also, I'm broke), so I'm just going to wait it out until I've got some spare change.

Noir thinpak set, 47.87 is pretty good, even if they did raise the price of most of the ADV titles (this one came out after Rightstuf's sale, or I would have gotten it there; Rahxephon and Full Metal Panic should be similar deals). All normal Bandai and Funimation titles are 14.39 (If you want to start Scrapped Princess, Overman King Gainer, Planetes, Fullmetal Alchemist, none of which are complete yet, though).

Recently completed series, I would highly recommend R.O.D. the TV, though I don't have time right now to compare it to TRSI's sale on box + 7. I would also recommend Paranoia Agent, four volumes, from Geneon, currently showing (late at night) on Cartoon Network.

Of course, just this morning I ordered Fruits Basket 2 from there to complete my set, without discount, and you can't cancel orders...

(BTW, fruits basket 1 is the same price at Bestbuy as volumes 3 and 4: 11.99)

I loathe ADV sales. Although their prices are outrageously attractive, most of those products are defaced or mutated one way or the other. Lots of AOD folks were burned and sworn that they never order from their sales again.

The sale itself is linked and described in my initial post under the 16th, I believe. I didn't add any links to "recommended titles" or anything like that this time because I'm way behind in my summer school classes and the DDD sale is going on anyway.

Edit: under the 17th, not 16th

Since it wasn't based on the manga like season 1 and 2, 3 just didn't have the same draw as it's predecessor. I wasn't engrossed in the story as I was with 1 and 2.

While I enjoyed the Son of God story arc, the rest of the stories were pretty lame. Now that the manga is being released stateside, why not buy those instead? The Revenge arc should start around volume 18 or so and it should be released in September. My younger cousins are big Kenshin fans and that's why I got the DVDs and even they thought that the last season wasn't all that good, then again, anything after Kyoto that wasn't the Revenge arc would have been a letdown anyway.

Well, it is a really big box too.
Also, weirdly, it is cheaper to buy all three volumes and the box seperately than to buy the fully-populated box.
Besides, a girlfriend who likes Zim is a keeper, so you need to do what you gotta do.

I don't know which one you'll get (though the people that ordered Southern cross in a similar ADV sale got the defective disk in that set). You can get a replacement, though it may take a while... I think it took more than a month for me. You have to contact ADV through the website and give them your email address, they'll reply, and will send you a disc...

As far as Kenshin season 3 goes: I doubt people dislike it because of the religion aspect, but rather because it was all "filler" to take up time until Watsuki finished the revenge arc in the manga. Unfortunately, it ended up being the last season. Not that anime filler is always bad, but because they can't alter any of the characters (since you're making up stories not in the manga), there's little to no real change in them. Besides, the bento boxes, while pretty neat looking, suffer from having each DVD being in a little cardboard sleeve, which is far from optimum when storing the discs.

Thanks for the input everyone. I'm thinking I'll pass on the third box. Can anyone recommend a good DDD deal that's normally too expensive? What do you guys think about Gantz? I saw the disks were low already and after the discount would be pretty decent. I don't know anything about the series. Tenjo Tenge? The new Anthology box from the creator of Inu Yasha? I'd really like to pick up some decent stuff, but I'm a little unsure of what's worth it.

As of now, I think I'm just picking up a few television series boxes and maybe the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex someone recommended earlier.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Best,

-B

I agree with Jah, Gantz only has two episodes per disc, and isn't a very good deal. It takes until volume three to get into the story too. (At least it did for me.)

I enjoyed Rumiko Takahashi Anthology, though you might want to wait till the collected set comes out next month. I haven't done the math, but I assume it is cheaper. (Just put it on your wish list for the next DDD sale....that's what I do.)

Haven't seen Tenjo, so I can't comment on that, but GitS: SAC is excellent. I really like the series.

Hope this helps,

-John

I second the GiTS:SAC recommendation, the DDD sale is a great way to pick up the first season. If you are not buying the LEs, it's about $87 for the whole thing.

BTW, Yukikaze was not "cancelled", a misconception that some people seem to have. Bandai has been waiting for the rest of the show to actually be released in Japan to bring the rest of it over. The Operation 5 Japanese R2 dvds won't be released until this August. I think the R1 Yukikaze release was a test of the LE/SE v. regular edition format (would people pay more for a DTS edition) that is now used for the R1 GitS:SAC releases.

Y'S LEGACY-ENTIRE SERIES $14.38 (http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com/redirect.cfm?referral=dvdtalkedt&goto=buyPage&identifier=MBI000409)

Are you recommending it because of the price or because of the show? Have you even seen it before? It sucks! I got this in the DDD 20% sale 12 months ago and it is total crap. Y's II is much better.

Reign is also very cheap because it is an aquired taste. I like Peter Chung's animation style, but I thought this show was just too weird and boring for me.

Now I really liked his Riddick Chronicles short. That can be had relatively cheap. Unfortunately it's widescreen P&S and not anamorphic.:(

DDD has GITS:SAC Volume 6 SE for just $20.99. This has a list price of $49.99 and comes with a t-shirt. I paid just $16.79 after the coupon was applied. Definitely worth the extra $4.80 over the regular version.:)

Prequel-ish side story to X. I watched the first 15 minutes of this a few years ago (back when Manga streamed anime over the Internet -- and no, I don't know how they got the rights to stream a CPM title) and turned it off because it seemed kinda stupid to me.

As always, YMMV.

I know exactly what that's like.

My ex-girlfriend was bored with Cowboy Bebop. My favorite series, disrespected :( The series has been permanently scarred in my mind, ever since. I haven't been able to look at anime the same way (but I'm *trying* to get over it).

edit: Also, GITS:SAC is pure gold. Don't let anyone tell you different :)

edit: You could try Fruits Basket on her, but it depends on how much she enjoys TV shows vs movies.

My wife used to hate it, but it ended up she had to pick out the anime she wanted to watch. Now she spends way too much on anime (like normal DVDs, she has about 3x more than me). That's how it is with everything with her. God forbid I suggest a book or a DVD - that's a sure way to have it never picked up. :( Someday she'll learn, like she did with the anime.

Then again, back in the day we were watching my friend's anime - Ninja Scroll, Vampire Hunter D, etc...amusing but not exactly story-driven.

I think her first animes were Noir (not even good!) and Chobits as they came out. Excel Saga disc 1 we stumbled upon and laughed our heads off at. After that, IIRC, she started collecting Rahxephon and Please Teacher...odd since she hated sci-fi and giant robots...she's a little better now. :D

Ha ha. I'm not sure how well Berserk would go over on the wife. It's a pretty violent series. I think I'm the exception a lot of times when it comes to being a girl.

If you want to get something solely for her, here are some more girlie series I'd recommend: Marmalade Boy (one I'm currently enjoying quite a bit and spending way too much money on), His and Her Circumstances, Fruits Basket (as someone mentioned earlier, though I don't own it myself), and I know there are others... However, I can't say that you'd personally enjoy them as a guy, although I've seen a number of guys on here and elsewhere who don't seem to mind and actually like the more girlie series!

Also, any girl who falls asleep during Cowboy Bebop should be dropped like a brick. One time, I dated a guy who I was trying to give some culture, and if he didn't like Army of Darkness... man, oh man, was he going to be dropped like a brick (not really, I'm not that horrible, but close). Honestly, though. I don't see how you can be bored by COWBOY BEBOP!

I don't think there is a secret. It's just not for some people. I've tried explaining to people that anime stems further than DBZ (which I have never seen and never plan on seeing because I just don't think it would be able to compare with what I have seen), but they're quick to judge and make fun.

I guess I'd suggest anything with a flair of romance (maybe Escaflowne, but that doesn't exactly scream "wifey" with the mecha and whatnot). Who knows.

I really need to get back to my studies now.

I agree with all of justbarelymovin's recommendations-for-a-wife/girlfriend. Slowly I've been getting my wife to watch with me (though I know a large part of that is her willingness to try something that I enjoy, and spend a lot of money on).

She's liked:
Fushigi Yuugi: I think this one is based on a shonen (for boys) manga, but it's still very shoujo (for girls) in style and the artist is female as well. This is probably one that guys can enjoy just as much. Miaka, a Japanese highschool girl, is transported into a fantasy land in a book that is very similar to ancient China. There, she becomes the priestess of Suzaku, a country that is at war with the country of Seiryu. She must gather the stars of Suzaku, after which she can make a wish, which she wants to use to go home. There's action and romance, though you may be tired of the Tamahome/Miaka thing midway through. It's also two seasons so it's fairly long, though I defy anyone to watch the first season and not want the second one (it ends on a pretty big cliffhanger).

Fruits Basket: based on a shoujo manga series. An odd story about a girl who, through various circumstances, comes to live with a family who is cursed to turn into cuddly versions of the Chinese zodiac (+ a cat) whenever the opposite sex touches them. Only seen one volume, the rest is on order. Mainly romance, some action. Volumes 1, 3, and 4 are cheap at Best buy, but a better bet would be to get the boxset (which is a box with the individuals inside) at DDD or something.

His and Her Circumstances: Based on a shoujo manga series. Curiously, this was produced by studio Gainax, the same people who made Evangelion. It's about a highschool girl who works hard to put on the facade of a perfect student, until she meets a similarly perfect guy, and her barriers finally break down. I find myself surprisingly entertained, and I like the fact that they start dating early on, instead of dragging it out. Usually found very cheap at Rightstuf.com (they did make the DVDs, after all)

Azumanga Daioh: based on a manga that is actually a collection of comic strips, so there are a lot of little sequences of jokes. Revolves around a high school class and teachers, all of whom have some goofy quirk. I think she's a little offended by how incompetent one of the teachers is (she's a teacher herself). I think a new thinpak collection is coming out soon, but if you're lucky you can find cheap singles at Bestbuy.

She doesn't like giant robots (though one day I hope to get her to watch Escaflowne and Rahxephon). I'm certain she'll hate any harem show (well, girl harem,as most of those shoujo shows above are guy-harem shows anyway). She obviously likes romance, and although all are longer TV shows, it allows her to get more into the characters. She's watched some Miyazaki, and even took me to Howl's Moving Castle, but she doesn't particularly like it (can't wait for Totoro to come out though).

I know she'll never like it nearly as much as I do, but I appreciate the fact that she tries (and believe me, the first few episodes before she gets hooked into a series is like pulling teeth). Besides, I'll never enjoy spending hours at Ross like she does, but I'll take her and wait for her... :)

fujishig has some excelllent suggestions. I'm not too manly to enjoy a decent romance story (hell, eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, sorta a wacky variant, right, was my favorite movie of that year, right after Return of the King).

But the crappy movies where it goes like this:
1) guy and girl meet
2) one of the lies to the other (normally guy)
3) Chaos and anger ensure, or wacky comedy hijinks as one tries to maintain the lies
4)guy and girl get back together

I hate those ****ing formulaic movies. At least anime romance (the good ones) have a little more originality to them.

Anyway, Fruits Basket owns, I like Kyo - he's always getting angry and trying to beat up Yuki. The main character, Tohru, is overly nice, too nice and too helpful to others...my wife used to be way to much like this before she got a little more spine - so maybe that's why I get so much amusement from this show. I did start teasing her when she was doing "a Tohru". :D The dub is very good as well, actually well-regarded, even the song reversioning is pretty good and catchy...funny, coming from Funimation, normally the translation butcher.

Fruits Basket is one of my favorite shows, oddly. There's a dark storyline going on with the Chinese zodiac that helps it have some depth. Tohru's eyes are WAY to huge, but you kind of adjust to it eventually.

His & Her Circumstances I saw the first 2 discs of. Pretty entertaining. The Manga creator didn't like what Mr. Depressed-Evangelion-Director :D was making and canceled the show, so it just kinda stops as I hear from my wife. :( Too bad because its style & story was much better than most.

I believe that's true, as it just sort of ends, kind of like the way Evangelion did. Grr. And, of course, Berserk. I really wish they'd scrap the ending and make another season. I think they have enough of a following now to where they could fund it.

Oh, yeah. I forgot Fushigi Yugi! I've only read the manga (though I own both seasons + the OVA... I just really haven't had time to watch much lately, though I know as soon as Marmalade Boy gets here, I'm going to make time and probably regret it later :D ). Fushigi Yugi is probably a good choice for the wife/girlfriend indeed.

fujishig did an excellent job of putting together a list, so I'd recommend anything he did.

I was thinking of another series that -might- be fun to watch with your wife/gf: The Irresponsible Captain Tylor. It's an older series, but it's definitely fun and funny, and eventually, there's some romancey stuff that evolves (when isn't there, really?). That might seem a little far-fetched, but who knows. It's hard for me to tell these things, as I said, I'm not the typical girl, I guess, though I do like my fair share of girlie things. ;)

Better make any last orders at DDD if you're planning on buying anything else!

Okay, I seriously have to write this paper now. UGH.

Captain Tylor's also getting a new release courtesy of TRSI. Not entirely sure what's changed on it, though, as I haven't seen the show since the VHS days.

Both Kare Kano (His and Her Circumstances) and Fruits Basket (and Fushigi Yuugi, to a lesser extent) have much more story in the manga, so if you want to see the continuation, I'd suggest looking there. What's interesting is that Fruits Basket was kind of an experiment by Funimation: the whole series is on four disks (6 eps each) and they raised the price per disk (kinda the opposite of ADV's Gantz experiment). I don't believe it did well initially because of this, but since then they lowered the retail price and it's become somewhat of a hit, at least enough so that Funimation is supposedly looking into getting another season made.

On the other hand, if someone hadn't recommended Fruits Basket to me, I would have never picked it up based on the name and the DVD covers. Ever.

I haven't seen all of it yet, but Kaleidostar comes highly recommended by the AnimeonDVD folk. ADV helped finance it, but they're still delaying the DVD release of the second season. It's the story of a young girl who dreams of performing in the Cirque-De-Soleil like venue, Kaleidostar. The first episode didn't really grab me, but it's been recommended enough that I bit during the whole ADV slasher sale.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. It is coming out with a newer release (Captain Tylor). I picked it up a long time ago during one of TRSI's weekly specials, which I haven't updated with this week (sorry, I'm just really struggling with trying to keep up with these summer classes).

I know so many guys who are turned off by film or TV show titles (ie: The other day I was guffawing at the fact that one of my guy friends hadn't seen The Princess Bride. His response was of course, "That sounds gay." OI VEY. He, of course, after having watched it, enjoyed it thoroughly). Similar experiences with guys when it came to Princess Mononoke and Scrapped Princess (I guess "princess" just doesn't go over too well with the male gender). By the way, I watched the first volume of Scrapped Princess, and it was pretty entertaining.

I have the first volume of Kaleido Star, but I haven't had a chance to watch it, either. I'd imagine that'd be a good one for the gals.

And YAY!! My Marmalade Boy sets came in today. I love Tokyopop's sturdy packaging. Oh god, I'm so excited. I feel like such a girl.

R.O.D. the TV Series should be right up your alley. It's one of my all time favorite shows and the complete box set comes out on July 5. You can get it at Rightstuf for $120.:)

I looked at a couple user comments about R.O.D. and it sounds like it's based on OVA movie. Is this it and would it be a good way to tell whether I would like the series?

Yeah, it's a good place to start, but I like the TV series a lot more than the OVA. The TV series is awesome.

Its more that ROD the TV is like a continuation of the OVA, but it takes a few episodes before any dots get connected. I liked both equally well.

I just got a shipping notification for this set. Interestingly, it's still listed at Bestprices at the same price as before, so perhaps this isn't a misprice? I'll send an update when I get the package. Thanks to grune and anyone else who gave the heads up for this deal.

I got the Now and Then, Here and There set in the mail today. It appears to be the same set that has been out for a while...3 episode discs + a bonus disc. A great find for about $10 shipped! Thanks again.

Thanks for the anime suggestions. I think I'll probably get Magic Knights Rayearth and R.O.D. I've also got my eye on Daphne in Brilliant Blue vol 1, although it's one of the pricier ones at about $18 for 4 episodes after discount. Any comments on that title?

http://www.animeondvd.com/reviews2/disc_reviews/3370.php

The essential anime version is an excellent deal. It contains the entire series on just 3 discs and each disc has a list price of $19.99. I believe that DDD has each disc for around $13 each, so it would cost you just over $30 for the entire series after the discount is applied.:)

This is the anime.
Slayers - Premium
Goldenboy

cartoons that aren't really anime.
South Park Season 5
Simpsons Season 5
Invader Zim box with extra disc

As for the wife recommendations, my girlfriend has a friend who does not like anime but these are the ones that have gone over well with her. Fruits Basket, Ranma 1/2, and Jubei Chan (Secret of the Lovely Eyepatch). FB and JC are affordable with only 4 discs each (that i know of) but R 1/2 is not a cheap one to get into(i have 7 seasons, 2 movies, and an OVA. think i have them all)

I have been finding more Anime DVD (http://www.360comics.com/itemlist.aspx?c=16&n=p&id=25) products on 360 Comics (http://www.360comics.com/) recently. I usually buy my statues and comic books from them, but just stumbled across a Daphne Anime DVD (http://www.360comics.com/item.aspx?c=16&n=p&p=1&id=25&pid=38263) a couple of days ago and then started poking around a little more. I usually shop online using Froogle (http://froogle.google.com/froogle?scoring=p&q=DVD+Anime+360comics.com) first as it is easy for me to find and sort stuff by price. Suprisingly enough, I am running across more Anime at the Big Box retailers like Target (http://www.target.com) , although thier is not one real close to my house. I also check out DCB Service (http://www.dcbservice.com/highlight.aspx) occasionally and seem to run across some Anime there also.

Yeah, me too. I was also wondering about this. However, Amazon has its list price at $34.96 with a release date of June 28, 2005. While the release dates are similar, the prices are way off. I'm honestly not sure what's going on here.
I got a shipping notice too. The official reduced list price is $34.99. It looks more like a pricing error that they just don't seem to care.

I just got a shipping notice email today as well. Your post was a bit confusing, are you saying that the "complete series" is only 3 episodes plus a bonus disc? or are you saying that it contains several discs with 3 episodes per disc plus a bonus disc? and you confused things even more by saying that it's been out for a while but amazon and bestprices both list this as a future release date.

3 episodes/disc plus a bonus disc (that being a total of 4 discs). It has been out for a while, but the edition people have been getting from this order appears to identical, just at a lower price (at least via Best Prices). I think that's essentially what the OP was saying.

Pretty much. I should have said the set came with three discs with episodes on them (I believe there are 13 episodes spread across the 3 discs, but I don't have it in front of me), and a special bonus disc. I don't see any difference between what I received and the box set that had been released back in 2002. Even the UPC is identical. I just wanted to make it clear that what bestprices sent out was in fact the N&T H&T box set and not something else, like just the first disc, since the price was almost too good to be true.

From an earlier post I made in the thread:
"Now and Then, Here and There" is a 12 episode series. The episodes are distributed a bit oddly through the 3 DVDs (5 on DVD 1, 4 on DVD 2, 3 on DVD 3)

EDIT: See two posts below.

Ugh. Actually, now looking at the listings, it's 13 episodes (distributed 5, 4 and 4 through the first 3 DVDs). When I first looked, the sites I visited had the 3rd disc listed at 75 minutes long, so I figured it was 3 episodes. Anime on DVD was one of them, but looking at their review, it says that there are four episodes. Other sites list the correct time at 100 minutes.

Okay, for whatever reason, I stopped by Big Lots again today. I stopped by a different one this time, and they didn't have a single thing. But, I stopped by the one I stopped by a couple days ago, and they had a BUTTLOAD more. I found 3 different volumes of Chobits (2 of which I needed), 2 different volumes of Someday's Dreamers (1 of which I needed, pretty good considering there's only 3 volumes total), a couple volumes of Mahoromatic, Adventures of Mini Goddess, Master Keaton, Captain Herlock, Sakura Wars: The Movie (LE version with 10 mini double-sided pencil boards!), Armitage (Dual-Matrix and Poly-Matrix), Gungrave, and more. It was insanity, and it was probably the most excitement I've had shopping in a very long time.

This may not sound like a big deal to people who don't care for sporadic volumes, but at $4 a pop, it's a really nice way to either a) start a series or b) fill in the gaps.

Thanks again, gang.

How'd you get 26 bucks? Is that with shipping or something?

29.99 = regular price
29.99 * .67 = 20.09 with 33% discount
20.09 * .9 = 18.08 with GA 10% discount stacked (39.07% off total)

Buy over 100 bucks, get free shipping (they had a lower free shipping threshold earlier, but I'm not sure if that's still there).

Honestly, a lot of people are put off by Rightstuf's near retail prices, but their sales really are hard to beat, 20% off at DDD aside. The discount is lower for this Geneon sale, but Geneon prices in general are higher (even DDD has stuff like Gungrave at around 22 bucks a piece). I often find that their preorder prices stacked with the 10% discount make Geneon titles cheaper than even DDD regular prices, and so I've preordered most Geneon stuff from them and probably won't use this sale. And they have customer service that can't be beat, and I've never had a crushed item from them yet (I'm almost afraid to order artboxes at DDD)

They usually have studio sales all the time, sometimes even including preorders, and those are at 35-40% off, stackable with the 10%. This is aside from their usually excellent weekly deals, and their bundles. I'll use DDD if I just want a disc or two, or if they're having that 20% off sale... otherwise, I think 90% of my purchases are from Rightstuf. There's a reason that there's such a huge fan following for this store at animeondvd.com.

And I don't work there, honest. Just had to get that off my chest... :)

BTW, I have to add this:
the 100 dollar threshold for free shipping is not 100 spent, it's 100 before discounts. So if the total in your cart before applying the coupon is 100 bucks, you get free shipping. So because the 29.99 dvds will show up in your cart as 26.98, buy four, get free shipping, even if you only spent around 80 bucks after discounts.

edited again to add:
The lower $49 threshold for free shipping is still present this week. So buy two, get free shipping...

bottom line is, for someone who just wants to go there and buy a single volume of just about any series (even the old ones) with shipping your looking at $20-22, so they take their over priced products, and by the time you get the sale price and shipping, your down to what you SHOULD be paying in the first place.

not to mention, just browsing some of the titles, you can pick up quite of few of those things at big lots for $4.

Which reminds me, i cant get to a big lots by me, the nearest one is a 2 hour drive. If anyone wants to help me out getting a few of those $4 dvds let me know what you have at your local big lots.

Speaking of which, I just replied to the $3.99 thread with many of the titles you found.

Here's (http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showpost.php?p=6189158&postcount=17) what I came up with.

Not all stores are the same. There are people who are willing to pay a little more for better service and less problems. Rightstuf is one of the few places where people usually order LE items without worrying that they'll be damage. So yeah, you're paying more, but then again, you don't see a lot of complaints lodged against Rightstuf. Rightsfuf is not my main retail source, but I do buy from them when they have good deals. Though I wish they would hurry up and ship my Sasami keychain.

which would be nice if rightstuf wasnt over priced. with the 33% discount dvds still come in at $26. they are one of those places (such as columbia house) that thinks its ok to charge msrp of $30...

i would be really interested if someone finds something in that sale that they cant find some place else (DDD with free shipping).

That's fantastic. Your list is a lot like mine. I'll go ahead and update with what you found and what I found in specific. Thanks for your hard work. :)

It was no big deal. Those 13 stores are all within 15 miles of me.

Though strategizing the order in which to visit them took some time (damn NP completeness and whatnot) :D

I was lucky. I went to a grand total of two (the rest are kinda out of the way). One is in my city, the other a little further out (which had zilch). I guess the disappointment of the second store made me revisit the first one, and I hit the jackpot today. Your findings were very similar to mine (yours missing a few here and there and vice versa, but not much!). It's a shame there weren't any Haibane Renmei DVDs, though. I would've liked to have gotten a few! But I'm in no way complaining. Seriously, today was like being a little kid in a candy story (or pretty much how I am in candy stores presently). ;)

Again, thanks everyone for all your help. You guys are what keep this thread going. I really appreciate it.

Justbarelymoving,

Fear not. I come in friendship. Now, shall I just tell you which friend of yours this is, or should I drop a few clue-imbued sentences? I'm leaning toward the latter. It's been a long time since we've rocked a mosh pit. It's also been a long time since we last waxed poetic about buttery goodness.

Miss you!
The other petite brunette.
