Lately I've been inputting my CD collection in MediaChest, so I've dug a lot of my rarely listened to discs out of my basement. One such CD is a 2 disc drum 'n bass mix - DJ Dara's Renegade Continuum. It isn't listed in their database, at least the UPC I have isn't, so I submitted it myself. The submission form asks for a place where it is sold, so I looked it up on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...767831-7577609

The CD's OOP and there is one seller selling it for $75. I looked on ebay to see if that was a realistic price for it, but no one's offering it. Besides the basic laws of supply of demand, why is this CD worth so much? Is DJ Dara dead or something (I've kind of fallen off of the electronic music train)? Or is this Amazon seller deluded in thinking that anyone would pay that price?

There's a completed listing on eBay that didn't sell for $0.99, so looks like the Amazon seller's just trying to get lucky.

It seems like sellers on Amazon will change $50+ for any OOP title, whether it's rare and in demand or not.

In similar news, I recently sold Spoon's Telephono for $70 on eBay. I expected to fetch about $15.

Everything on Amazon Marketplace is way overpriced. I have been looking for the Smashing Pumpkins "Aeroplane Flies High" box set. People on amazon want $350 for a sealed one.

Also someone wanted $180 for a sealed copy of Skinny Puppy's "The Process". I bought an opened one on ebay for $1.77. $178.23 cheaper.

I've gotten decent money for many of my Mobile Fidelity Gold CDs on half.com, like around $100 for U2's Joshua Tree, $80 for Guns N' Roses Appetite for Destruction, $50 for Blondie's Parallel Lines, $70 for Heart's Dreamboat Annie. I have many others that sold around $30 which was the lowest I was willing to sell at the time. As far as non-gold CDs, I unloaded many heavy metal CDs from the late 80's that I owned at more than I paid, typically $16 to $20 each.

Thanks for the input, guys. I've only bought books from Amazon's Marketplace and they were never overpriced. This seller really has some wishful thinking.

Although, I am a bit disappointed that it's not worth $75. Would've been nice to have a small windfall.

You could probably sell it for $35 just to undercut the seller.

The priciest CD I can think of is probably Coldplay's Safety EP, which usually brings in $500 to $1,000. I'm only a collector of Coldplay stuff... what else is really expensive that you guys know of?

Not trying to condone piracy here, but would anyone really pay $50+ for a single disc of ANYTHING these days considering the prevalence of mp3s?

I was thinking the same thing. You would have to be a pretty big collector or completist.

I was fortunate enough to sell Evanescence's first record for over $150. I bought it for $15. To be fair though, there were only 2500 produced.

Quite possibly because mp3 is an abomination to the cd format, a complete step back in the progression of new music formats. It's kind of like asking why someone would buy a dvd or go to the theater to watch a film when they could easily watch a shoddy bootleg rip. Sometimes poor quality, even when free, just doesn't cut it.
